I was a musician once upon a time and have always had a special appreciation for instrumental music, mostly progressive rock, but there is a subgenre of music that gets overlooked a lot...themesongs.
I think part of the reason is we only get about 1 and a half minutes and then the show starts...or a commercial blares in.But if you ever get to hear the extended versions, some of them are incredible. It dosnt hurt if just hearing the first few note conjures up warm fuzzies from the past or lets you know something good is about to happen.
Some of my favorites are...
Voyage to the bottom of the sea...moody,dramatic and really fit the show.
Space 1999...wow,mega jumping bass, pseudo porn track guitar alternating with blaring horns and strings...too freakin' cool.
Mission Impossible...inyer face bassline,jazzy flute,big horns...KAT cool man.
Monty Pythons flying circus...wth!?...this is some countries national anthem, they played it every morning while my flight marched by in the morning(EARLY in the morning) while I was in bootcamp. We got in trouble EVERY morning for laughing as we went by...guess the DI wasnt a PBS viewer.
Peter Gunn...many a stripper twirled her tassles to this one...its just plain raunchy.
Red Dwarf...hard to picture this song with a scifi show...til you know the story about Lister's plans for life after the space corp."goldfish shoals nibbling at my toes"
Lost in Space...spectacular John Williams. There were 2 of them and both were great.
Dr. Who...weeeeiiiiiiiirrrrrrrd man.
Buck Rogers in the 25th century...show was silly but the theme was terrific.(WILMA DEARING! oh my!)SouthPark did a hilarious take on the whole opening montage with Cartman...you gotta see it if you were even a minor Buck Rogers fan.
James Bond...the main theme is truly iconic and 2 of the movie title themes were among my favs...You only live twice, and Tomorrow never dies.
So what are some of you favorites?
a free place to hear some...quality fair but I bet you could find much better...mine are from cd's. http://www.televisiontunes.com/index.php
Pink Panther
Hogan's Heroes
Star Trek Enterprise
1941
Rockford Files
Giligan's Island (sticks in my head for hours once I hear it)
Hardcastle & MCCormick
I've never heard that last one or 1941 but all of those others are great...especially Hogan's heroes.Enterprise theme version 1 was,to me,better than what they changed it to.
Monty Python theme is Sousa's Liberty Bell, played at Obama's Inauguration and caused few chuckles here due to its Monty Python associations. This version is cool but no terminal fart !
Red Dwarf is meant to have a 21st Birthhday special this year - ITV finances not good though. Ending song sounded Christmas to me = it's cold outside..................fun, fun, fun in the sun
Hawaii 5-0 aka US National Anthem as in "The Dish" movie.
Tales of the Unexpected
McGyver
21 Jump Street
A-Team
Magnum PI
Miami Vice
I didnt know that...hehehheeheh...I never did find out which country was using it for their morning wakeup song...the DI just said it was that contry's anthem.
one can pray it happens!
I dont remember McGyvers or 21 jump street's theme.
Hawaii 50?...somebody had to go there...ahahahaha...great one.
crap!,now hawaii 50's theme is stuck in me head...gggaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!
there are some sites that will let you listen to these...heres one...quality was fair but I bet there are better ones.

I called the second version for the Hokey Hay Dance Enterprise
The 4400
BSG (not the 70's one)
MASH (not the movie)
I actually like the theme for DS9 too. Maybe because it was the best Star Trek series made
Miami Vice (all the music)
Somewhere in Time
Almost all of John Williams' work...Out of Africa, Chaplin, Dances With Wolves (majestic and haunting), James Bond...Octopussy
BSG ... incredible melange of styles, vocals and instrumentals...
Pink Panther (pure fun music)
NYPD Blue.
ST...TNG and Voyager.
When I mentioned Voyage to the bottom of the Sea I meant the tv show not the movie...the movies theme was awful.
oh,how could I forget Sanford and Son and the Jeffersons.
and Simon and Simon
Put on the Hits of the Ventures, hehe such fast drummin and guitar pickin. Wipeout.
