Greetings All!
Throughout my time here playing and modding the game I have become quite knowledgeble in the overall aspects of the game and modding the game as a whole. While I learn stuff everyday, I feel like I can teach and answer questions as well. People have helped me along the way, so this is my way of giving back to the community. So, if you have a question that you think I may know an answer to, feel free to post and I will reply whatever I know. Feel free to ask about anything about the game, modding, or anything else in general, my head is full of useless facts and knowledge. I have played most Space/Sci-fi games, love fantasy games (like Oblivion and NWN) watch just about every Sci-Fi & Fantasy TV show, and have a deep knowledge of science and history, especially ancient history. I have a Marketing and Sales background, with a specialization in graphics and art. I also know modeling programs, but use 3D MAX specifically for modding.

is it possible to make a phase jump instant?
hi,
i'm trying to add the destablizehyperspace ability found on the starbases to the TEC's Dunov support ship and i've been playing around with the files and can't seem to get it to work.
i've just replaced one of the abilities already in the Dunovs file and that didn't work and i tried making a new set of files in case the use of the file was causing it to not work and i changed it so the research nessasary wasn't needed any more.
is it hardcoded so that it can only be used on starbases's
any ideas on how to get this to work anyone?
What do you mean including alpha? Is there currently a black.dds file in the folder that I can copy and rename to overwrite the proper files? Or would I have to create one? If I have to create one, how would I go about doing that?
mega-cleaver-tom I have tried puting the AbilityDestabilizeHyperspace into slot 4 on the danov but I have found that sins does NOT like a 5th ability in CAPITALS , so from this I suggest ONLY FOUR abilities for caps.
the destablize was listed in the ship description but it was extremly difficult to access the dunov ability selection/buy screen

Yes. You can do this by editing the race file or giving them a custom research. Either way, you simply increase the speed of hyperspace travel to be instant.
No, each DDS file is broken down into three graphic channels of R, G, B, and ALPHA. The Alpha channel acts as a mask. You need to edit it to cover the new stuff you did, or the game won't see it. The mask tells the game what actually to display. You need Photoshop or a like graphic program to see the different channels and edit them.
I have photoshop 7 but I am unable to open any .dds files. Is there a good base .dds file to work with or are there any tutorials that can help explain how to edit these .dds files?
to load the dds pictures/images you NEED the nvidia dds filters from the Nvidia site then your photoshop 7 will be able to read AND write dds files
Black-da.dds should work fine, although you may need to paint the alpha channel all white. Try that out and if it doesn't work I'll send you a .dds with that done and you can give it a shot.
Alright, I'll probably get around to trying that out sometime tommarow (friday). Could someone link me to the files at nVidia? (I'm going to bed now so, I figure if someone links me the files it'll save me some time searching)
I'll probably try messing around with the .dds files in photoshop jsut to get familiar with them before I try anything else. Thanks!!!

I'm simply trying to make the ships larger, do i have to edit all the meshes, if so what converters do i need, i use milkshape and gimp, among other things, I've been trying to tinker with it, but as is having trouble with the converting to XSI, i haven't actually had much experience with this, as most all my other modding was done with total war series.
So, simply hoping for either a link to any converters i may need, or at the very least if theres a tutorial that outlines this that would also be of help, i have looked around the site, but as is the search engine can be somewhat unhelpful when it comes to searching for the little things.
Anyways thanks in advance, for any help or advice on this subject, i wish everyone the best, and of course hope for more, peace.

The mesh resizing tool is horribly broken with respect to hardpoints as far as I know, if you have 3DS you can import the mesh and do it yourself, if you only want a couple feel free to email me or contact me on MSN or something and I'll do them for you.
okay, i did what you told me to do and now when i try to play my game it says Cannot start because it cant find fmod.dll or something like that ... i tried to get two games and failed

SWEET! Thank you SO MUCH guys! I edited the .dds file and changed the alpha channel to white. Guess what. It works like a dream. All you see when you zoom all the way out instead of galaxies are little stars. So, just take the black-da.dds, change the alpha chanel from black to white and replace GalaxySpiral.dds, GalaxySpiral2.dds, and GalaxySpiral3.dds to get rid of the galaxies and replace them with stars.
You know what's even cooler? This change does NOT cause mismatches online or during mutliplayer play!!!! When I get done with my 50+ star map, I'll put them together in a little download pack and reference it back here. Thank you so much.

hello again Danman! I've got a few questions
1) is it possible to transfer fighter squadrons from one host to another? (ex: say i have a carrier it dies, i have a replacement for it with none of it's squadron points assigned, can i mod it so i can tranfer the stranded fighters to the empty carrier?)
2) is there a way to make carriers stop instantly replacing lost fighters?
3)is it possible to build strikecraft as individual ships/squads from a building?(ex: i want to make fighters be able to be buildable units that can move around a gravity well, but not be destroyed when it's host blows up and not be slaved to a host, but rather an independant unit)
4) can i store extra fighters on a carrier/building to replace lost ones, but not build new ones to replace them? (kinda like in freespace where you lose a wingman, but you may call in reinforcements to replace him/her, but they'll die too eventually leaving you without any more reinforcements)
