I got a 2nd post solution for someone in yoru state.Start reading technical computer help forums so you can start trying to remove all of the crap EA instaled on yoru cpu when you think you were just instaling a game. Good luck with that.

Try disabling ECN if you're in Vista? For some reason that seemed to fix it for me. For some wierd reason I couldn't access any secure pages on ea.com either.
Truly odd. I still don't fully know the cause, but I reset my netsh tweaks and it went away.
As to not buying EA, I understand the sentiment but RA3 is actually more fun than I've had with an RTS in years Well worth the $30.

But, no wonder it stuffed up then. I mean, having a whole game installed into the cache of the CPU can't be good, or did it inscribe the data straight onto the die with some form of engraving tool?

As stupid as it sounds, make sure your firewall isn't blocking anything. Then make sure you've got an account setup with the multiplayer system (it might be bouncing you to a browser to set this up). And as others have said, make sure you're running the latest patch level both of your OS AND RA3 (if the expansion is out, you'll probably need that as well).
To be honest I found RA3's online system utter pants, it was easier to find a random spud to play co-op with than it was the person sat 4 foot from me who I actually DID want to play with. Unless you're looking at LAN play I'd forget about on-line in RA3, it's hopeless.
Ohh and you can install stuff in to a CPU. Loadable microcode has been a feature of Intel (and probably AMD) CPU's for a good many years. Updates to this microcode can be loaded at boot via BIOS/EFI mechanisms. Hardly the thing you'll see in the movies but there you go.

Myself I had to turn off some Vista network tweaks, I couldn't load any secure pages on EAs site until I did (nor ra3 online)
I'm glad EA is using Steam now, I can't say I hate Securom but even though its not my favorite client I'll take Steam authentication anyday.

There is a slew of ports that your router needs open in order to do the simplest of tasks. That could be part of the problem. My guess is the fact that the online lobby is run by the gamespy engine. Gamespy has never been able to do online hosting correctly. Their software is always full of bugs, slow, and halfassed. They simply are not good programmers (or just to cheap to do it right - I'm thinking a mix of both). Anyway, I know thats not much help, but gamespy hosting is beyond help. Just try to figure out the port forwarding business for that game and you should be all set.

To make things worse, they're still using DirectPlay, which is being deprecated in favor of Games for Windows - and which has had the NAT helper removed in Vista. Which means that RA3 will have lots of problems behind a router on a Vista system.
I would think it depends on the router. I have a D-Link gaming router and my best friend has one too and we haven't had any problems.
Unless the patch is disentangling the hidden SecuROM folder, the DLL's contained within and the methods it uses to tie in to the OS. It IS still there. Telling the RA3 executable to not use them is not the same as 'removing from system'. Considering a full, kill everything I care not, uninstall of RA3 doesn't kill off SecuROM i find it exceptionally doubtful and highly dubious an EA patch would.
Probably not. Steam can't exactly scan your system for every game needing SecuROM. (Well, it could, but that's extremely unlikely.)

No actually the point isn't moot. SecuROM neither appears in the Add/Remove Programs area nor has a Star menu entry for itself. An average person can not uninstall it. Considering I've found multiple versions of these files scattered all over the shop I see absolutley no reason why a game doesn't take it's flavour of protection along with it.
Because it's a single application. You can't just uninstall it without taking ALL of it. If you have other games that use it, they're all now not working right.
Most people would find that unacceptable.
