Now thats interesting.
EVE:Online is a single shard, zero instancing MMORPG. This means everyone is in the same 'universe' interacting with one another. It means that when you are quietly PvEing someone can find you, interupt you and if you in a low security system... kill you or help you... most likley kill though. Not being prepared for this is considered your own damn stupid fault.
Smack talk is frowned upon. Smack enough and people will just kill you out of pricipal.
The universe is split in to solar systems, each has a security rating. 1.0 being 'safe' and 0.0 being 'free for all'. Not that you are safe anywhere in EVE. If someone wants to kill you badly enough, they will find a way. Security drops in 0.1 incriments so you get 0.9,0.8 and so on systems which affects the PvE rats that spawn in asteroid belts and the quality of those belts (along with mission rewards). Generally speaking people will leave you along down to 0.5 space as after that CONCORD (NPC police force) will not respond.
Unlike other RPG's where continual play is required to 'level up' EVE has gone for a time based system, you purchase a skill book from the market and train that skill. Each still has 5 levels and a time multiplier.(1x, 2x and so on) with is applied to your characters stats. Skills continue to train when logged off, but require an active trial/paid account. An item or ship will probably require multiple skills to be at certain levels before you can use it.
Ships come in various sizes: Frigate (your starting ship is a frigate), Destroyer (universally considered crap for combat), Cruiser, Battlecruiser, Battleship and capitol ships (Dreadnaught, Carrier, Mothership, Titan) although capitol ships are specialised units not OMGWTFPWND mobiles. A lot of ships have Tech 2 variants such as Heavy Assault Cruisers, Maruders, Interdictors and so on. Again highly specialised, but quite fun
You also have structures players can errect, things you can research, build, sell. It is worth noting that the economy is 100% player driven. You can be ripped off if you don't pay attention... you can rip people off.
Basically, all the crap players usually can't get up to (manupulate, decieve, back stab, greif) in other MMO's EVE allows, encourages and supports. It's a cruel universe and pod pilots (i.e. players) are very cruel immortal demigods.
And yes, it IS as bad ass as it looks. I highly recommend people who are looking for a decent space MMO or even Elite 4 to give a trial account a whirl.
I have been playing the game for over a year, while Im not playing it that much, I still subcribe, and keep the skills training, that way I can come back later and be able to fly some new ship or something..
EVE is badass, I think one person in my old corp had a sig that best described it 'Everyone Verses Everyone online'
there is so much more to this MMO than others, almost everything is player driven, and almost everything you can do can be classed as pvp, just going out to mine, you are competiting with other miners, selling stuff on market? so will others be and they will try and get a better price, manufacturing is on a whole new level in this game..
it really is a complicated game, but I would like to say that all this one year / two year to be any good is useless, and if you trying to play it solo, MMO's are not for you, what part of massively MUTIPLAYER online dont you get? you can be effective in as little as half an hour, train up propulsion jamming and you have a frigate skill by default and you can be helpful to a gang...
several golden rules I would say for eve generally... trust no-one, only fly what you can afford to lose, check and double check contracts and prices!!! Im sure there are more but they slip my mind at the moment
Eve is a sandbox game, so a looot of things are possible there that aren't possible in any other MMORPG. Also, there are a lot of people saying you need a year to be useful in Eve or you need to devote your life to it and so on: don't listen to them.
CCP has done a lot of things to make new players enjoy the game faster: more starting skill points, remaping of attributes, epic story arc missions for really good money, and so on. Also, if you join a Corporation like Eve University or some similar corps where they will guide you, you will learn and do fun things much faster.
And about the time, you put time in Eve depending on how much you want to be sucked in the game. You want to spend your life on it? Join one of the big alliances that are now at war in Delve/Querious/Period Basis and you can just be there 24/7. But not the whole game is like that.
The above post puts it right, eve is great because you have so many options, unlike some others you don't need to be online to 'level up' just need to keep paying the sub...
Sod the being useful in half an hour, you could be useful almost straight away, as a scout, many will pay for you to lose ships, so they know whats on the other side of that star gate..
After Monday I will be back in EVE a bit more, if anyone wants any help, just send me an eve mail and I will gladly help, also what I like about eve is, your not stuck doing one career, you can switch at any time!!!
It takes a long time to explain everything in eve, jsut experiance it, they have free trials. I play it and all my friends play eve, it is awsome.
