Anyone else goingto the midnight showing?
gah 4 and half hours till I see it. To excited....
"Rorschach's Journal. October 12th, 1985. Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!' And I'll look down, and whisper 'no.' They had a choice, all of them. They could have followed in the footsteps of good men like my father, or President Truman. Decent men, who believed in a day's work for a day's pay. Instead they followed the droppings of lechers and communists and didn't realize that the trail led over a precipice until it was too late. Don't tell me they didn't have a choice. Now the whole world stands on the brink, staring down into bloody hell, all those liberals and intellectuals and smooth-talkers, and all of a sudden nobody can think of anything to say."
Watchmen
It always makes me laugh hard; people that talk about/review a movie that they've never seen.
Anyway, I love comic hero's, but, not being 100% nerd, never even heard of the Watchmen. Went to see the movie 2 days ago. omg, NOTHING like I thought it would be. If I had kids, they would NEVER get to see this movie till about 17. I loved "Rorshack" (or, however in the heck you'd spell his name), which is why I sort'a disliked the ending (no spoilers). The plot was pretty darn well written for a comic movie, almost like a mystery from the tough-guy era of the 50s.
Why they put that sex scene in wihich was about as close to X as you can get I have no idea. I'm sure they could have shown plenty of "they had sex" sceenes without showing all the mechanics in detail from forplay to "ending".
Funny thing was to me, there was HUGE graphic violence scenes; graphic "hetrosexual" scenes; murder; rape; an entire city full of people masacured; but WHAT did my sister ask before she let HER kids go see it??? "They don't have 2 guys holding hands or kissing do they?" THAT was her big fear about what her kids would see, not the bone splinting, muscle ripping, blood gushing violence
The film was rather heavy i thought, i mean most movies you watch you watch, but in the back of your mind you still know their movies, you know? But there were some scenes, heavy that made me think, this is almost real life. I mean as real as you can get and still sit in a movie theater and watch it.
Rorschach in several places was like that.
The prison was heavy, almost too much.
The sex-scene i could have lived without, i mean, sure it sorta nice, but come on, no one wants to watch it in public.
Night Owl was decent, a decent man, and I felt the reaction he did at the end, and i thought, you know, you watch superhero movies and they beat on bad guys and give lectures, but no one screams or throws up, or seems really real, you know? I mean i dont know how to explain it, except to say that once i saw on the news a newsman get it on film down in nicaragua i think, and i thought, its less violent than a movie, one second on film, blam! over, but the realness had me shaking. It was real, no one called cut and the guy walked away. The scene with Night Owl at the end was like that for me. Maybe im just projecting, you know? We all bring our own experiences to the things we see and read and hear. Maybe. It just felt too real, and that made me like the movie, but it isnt one of those movies i can watch more than once. Too heavy.
Its like trying to watch The Passion of The Christ more than once, heavy heavy film, very moving, very hard to deal with emotionally though, especially one i couldnt watch more than once.
Anyway, it was an awesome film, best conversion i have seen, i cant see anyone else that could have live up to half of what Moore wrote. But still heavy, very very heavy.
Just my take on things though, so feel free to your own opinions,
-Teal
Really good movie - did justice to the novels for a change.
Oh, Teal, yes, Passion ot Christ; that IS a must see movie, but a "never see again" movie for me. I think that's what Watchmen is. I told my friends "You have to see that movie, but NO way am I going to see it with you again". . . . .
Well, I downloaded a CAM of the film, watched it. The cinema ticket from last night is still in my pocket.
It wasn't a cinematic masterpiece the likes of which we'll never see again. But it was worth £7.40 and parking... but nothing from the cencession stands.
I think I'll get the Black Freighter and Directors Cut on BR.
I really liked it. Okay, they coud have spared us the dangeling schlong of Dr. Manhattan, but as for the excessive voilence: I was surprised they actually showed it in such detail, and liked the fact that they did.
*laughs* What, you never heard of the Rorschach Test?
I really thought that in some situations I'd like to be as fast and merciless as Rorschach...
I actually lol'ed on the elevator shaft comment about Rorschach....
I thought the film was the best any fan of the comics could ask for. I've seen people moan about all sorts not being true to the comic but I feel they do it almost as if to prove they are a bigger fan than the next man. I mean who seriously thinks a giant squid with the brain of a psychic would be a better ending than what they have done in a film context.
I could pick holes if I wanted, but I enjoyed it overall and it was as faithful as I could have asked of it. I'm looking forward to seeing the directors cut Blue Ray and how much closer it will be.
It was a bit too brutal if anything, sex doesn't bother me but the violence was a bit over the top.
Violence in moveis is fine. But I hate sex in movies.
Sex belongs in porn. Why can't they simply show them starting to undress, then cut to it finished, or them going to sleep, whatever? I don't see how seeing two people screw makes a movie any better. It just makes it worse for me.
QFT
How so?
If it's a preference of a person to see two grown men beat the snot out of each over seeing a man and a woman entangled in an implicit scene of love and mutual enjoyment, then yes, I'd say something is wrong with that person.
While I agree the sex scene was a little over the top, the point of it was to demonstrate the extreme nature of the super hero psyche. The first "attempt" at sex between Night Owl and Silk Spectre was shot in a more reserved style, but the sex they had later was so extreme to show the transformation in their characters. Just knowing that Night Owl could get it up after putting on his costume would have been sufficient to get the point across, but by seeing the hyper fantasy sex on screen, the point is really driven home.
The relationships between power, violence, and sex are all strong subtexts in Watchmen, so it is no surprise these scenes were included in the movie. That said, it was probably a little disconcerting to people hoping for a sanitized comic book action movie, but point of fact, this is exactly the genre that Watchmen was deconstructing.
YEAH! Make love not war!
Here's thier sanitized comic book movie: Saturday Morning Watchmen
Cleverly done parody, unless you saw the movie most of the jokes would go over your head.
Hehe....I find this parody disturbing.
Indeed! Though, you know this is almost exactly what was being cooked up in some executive's head when trying to come up with the latest half hour commerical masquerading as kids programming to throw up on the Saturday Morning cartoon block back in the 80s.
Yeah, that is exactly why it is so disturbing...it looks just like the cartoons that were on TV when I was a kid. It is like Frank Miller's Batman handing out teddy bears and reading stories to kids in a cancer ward.
I liked it, it seemed to stay very true to the comics, with only small changes.
My only complain't would be that the sex scene was a little gratitutious.
Then again this was in a movie where a guy has his arms cut off, people get exploded, and you have to look at blue cosmic wang.
Good movie tho, it makes you think and tells you a good story. Its like a thriller/action movie.
I have a friend who had a lady-freind out from Holland. She was absoulutly shocked (can't really think how to describe how puzzled she was) that we have so much violence in TV and movies, extremely graphic stuff, yet most anything with sex/nudity is so "awful"; it's just the opposite in her country from what she described.
Saw it, so I thought I'd write a short review so I can share with you how I saw the movie...Part the First: intro. The intro is bloody amazing. Perfect. I can't articulate how completely in love I am with it. Oh, and the soundtrack, that is awesome too. There, with that out of the way, let's move on. Raw Shark was cast perfectly. Jackie Earle Haley didn't play the part of Rorschach, he WAS Rorschach! The guy is a walking creep-out. Just as good was Jeffrey Dean Morgan aka Comedian. Dan and Jon were also both fantastic, especially Jon with his HAL 9000ish voice, exactly as I pictured him in the GN, but with that bit of emotion, the hint he was also human at some point. Ozymandias was more or less OK, but in the GN he was more... he had charisma, approachability and that relaxing nature about him, and that lacked in the movie, I think. Malin was also not a perfect cast, as she had two scenes that she kind of failed in, but got balied out of them by Jon/Dan. Plus, she got naked, so that's a plus. Oh yeah, nakedness. I would like to ask a favor from the forum now. When someone gets naked in a movie, or god forbid, kiss someone, DO NOT GIGGLE LIKE A BABY! Seriously! Yes, it's a blue dong, get over it! Yes, she is naked and she is enjoying herself, don't be a 12-yearold about it!All in all, the movie is brilliant. Naturally, the comparisons between Watchmen and The Dark Knight are bound to crop up, but these two movies aren't really comparable. They deal with totally different situations and deliver totally different messages. Both are still awesome, though. And now, here be spoilers. Do not read any more. Rants ensue. There are lots of tiny changes in the movie, and I "agree" with most of them, I can see why they're there. One of those changes is the ending, which is about two times better than in the GN. I still miss the boat scene when the guy finds the bomb, I wish they found a way to get that in there too...But two things I do not get. Rorschach with the kidnapper and Dan and Laurie with the knot-tops. Rorschach was supposed to be completely cool, calm and collected while setting up to kill the guy in the fire, and with the distant narration of noone getting out of it. In the movie, he just lost control in a fit of rage. A big no-no. And Dan and Laurie with the knot-tops in the alley, they were not supposed to slaughter them. They were supposed to beat them up, and let Dan go mental brutality when he finds out about Hollis and gets the knottie in the bar. Can't really think of anything else that stood out in a bad way. The movie was awesome, a lot.
What their missing all the major componets of life, sex, killing other people, and killing other people for sex. Am i missing something?
