Medieval 2 Total War
I looked forward to this game and followed the development up until the release. I even pre-ordered the "special" pack with a little statue of a gothic knight. But the game was lousy. The real time battles were enjoyable (after a few MEGA! patches) but the strategic side of the game was dull and the movement of the armies a drain. I liked the movement of HoMM IV, simple and got the job done, but M2TW's movement made the game a pain. The strategic AI was poor, there was no feeling of being outwitted by it. After much modding its still weird. I have to praise the work of my favourite mod Stainless Steel, it did alot to keep my interest, I only purchased the expansion because the latest version of SS, 6.1, needed it. I played M2TW for ages before realising to myself "no matter how hard you try, it is not going to satisfy you. It suggests that it will but it never quite gets there. A wonderful battle followed by strategic boredom". I loved MTW, M2TW was very over-rated by reviewers, but I guess they, like me, got caught up in it all.
I've been wanting to tell somebody that for ages, and none of my friends play games so they wouldn't understand.
Anyone else have a classic/memorable game disappointment moment?
Maybe not my latest disappointment, but probably my biggest... Dungeon Keeper 2. Yes, it's old news, but the scars haven't yet healed for me...
A close second place goes to Evil Genius.
And, just off topic a little, I personally love Left 4 Dead, but I would point out I got it when steam had its half-price weekend. I feel it's fantastic value for $25, but with a tiny spread of weapons, levels and items, I can see why people felt a tad underwhelmed. It probably doesn't hurt that I only fire it up when friends are online either...
Edit: And yes, bring back adventure games!
Dungeon Keeper 2? Really? I missed the beautiful hand-painted map from the first one, but besides that I was happy enough. Anything in particular you didn't like?
Hellgate London has to be in there somewhere. Few games have so enraged players that they created their own site on which to vent their spleen! www.flagshipped.com
But Master of Orion 3 is at the top of my list for disappointing, as released.
It seems to me that developers start out on a sequel by saying, "Ok, now what do players really like about the game. These things? Right then, let's take those out and do something entirely different."
Thinking about it whilst having a shower. One of my biggest disapointments was The Sims 2.
I thought "Cool, it's little computer people turned up to 11".
What I expected: Little computer people that if left to their own devices would look after themselves and I could sit, introducing new variables and watch the ensuing fun/chaos/death. In essence something akin to a virtual cat.
What I got: Little computer people which would wet themselves, despite having a nifty bathroom not clean up their own mess and perpetually complained about their sad little existence inside my computer (i.e. they broke the 4th wall).
What I did: Uninstalled it rather quickly.
I'm still shocked people actually purchase those SIMS games. Well I can understand some females possibly being interested with playing Ken and Barbie on the computer.
Sacred_2 has been a disappointment for me... the only interesting piece for me was fighting the final boss in gold with a hardcore character where your heart starts racing. Overall there's no real game depth... all map monsters die within two or three swings. Currently playing this game brings as much joy as going for a walk around my neighborhood.
Diablo_3... I hate to say this, but I have a bad feeling Blizzard is making some bad decisions with its development... such as with the ORBS. I really hope I'm wrong.
Dunno. So far Diablo 3 seems to live up to it's predecessors for as much as I have read.
As for Sacred 2: I never even finished the first one whereas I have finished Diablo 2 like 5 times...
And yes, SIMS seems to be the usual sucker moms'... no wait... soccer moms' dream...
MoO3- Need I say more
Spore - had so much potential but was ruined by the dumbing down they did of it.
Star Trek legacy - They blew the budget on voice actors
Bingo. I've never been so disappointed in my life....except for maybe Wing Commander Arena. I can't believe IGN gave MOO3 a 9.something. Thankfully Gal Civ 2 came along.
Well. I am female. But was after LCP more than Ken and Barbie Hopefully Sims 3 will actually be more of a sandbox or have that mode either builtin or via trainers.
Oddly enough I played through Diablo 1 like crazy, loved it. Played LAN, online you name it. Bought Diablo 2 and it's expansion when they were bundled together. Never once completed it. I just didn't get on with the thing. I was dissapointed but hey we're all different.
sadly same here, I bought it on release day, and was a sad and broken man by the time I got to the DS9 missions.
Anything dealing with LOTR. I want that big epic battle experience but nothing has met my expectations.
Fable 2 I know its console only, but trust me if it ever goes to the PC stay far, far away. I made the worse mistake getting the special edition to. Im never listenting to Peter Molyneux again.
I love Left 4 Dead. I know its short and only 2 of the stages are playable in verses but there fixing that as well as adding survival mode. Still its only fun with friends. Playing by your self is very lame, but add a few friends and the lulz ensue.
Dawn of War 2. If you're going to release a game...finish it first please! And it has such god aweful netcode you're lucky to get 50% of your 3v3 games finished without someone suffering the connection flood and dropping. Not to mention Steam -AND- GFWL being required. And where are my destructable bridges?
Also some one mentioned Oblivion
I loved Oblivion. Its the first game i had with my 360. I played that game for God only knows how long. Then they gave me shimmering isles which was amazing. There are alot things in Marrowind I wish Oblivion had. But Oblivion is so huge and well after 120+ hours (I have no Regrets!!) there was still plenty to do. the fact that creatures level up with you does suck and I would say nearly breaks the game. But a good counter to that is making a set of armor that makes you 100% invisible (hehe).
So Oblivion was a good game but if given the option I guess I would have taken a revamped version of morrowind using oblivions engine instead.
Homeworld 2 is kinda like that as well. I would have like Homeworld 1 with improvements. The cheating AI in campaign is horrible but beating the game does give you a real sense of accoplishment.
I guess I'm a "sheep" - I don't mean to troll, but I found that comment rather obnoxious - just because you enjoy something that many people like doesn't mean that you have no individuality. Also, I enjoyed Oblivion, Fable II I also really enjoyed and L4D is another fun one.
I agree with people about Spore - I got to the tribal stage and found what appearing to be a very cut down RTS that had such limited units, and such a low unit cap that there was no real way to get supremacy over your neighbours.
Big dissapointment. I played it for about 3 hours, and now it sits, unloved in my Games Rack.
fallout 3 - not gonna comment....so sad
street fighter 4 - it's good but not the excellence of street fighter 2 and 3. not acceptable for this serie.
I wouldn't list Oblivion on here, but I enjoyed Morrowind much more. I did get tired of fighting bandit after bandit, each wearing one-three pieces of elite Glass armor. I really felt like once you'd seen one cave, you'd seen them all. Basically, after doing all the Qs for mages, fighters, thieves, assassin guild, arena and a few shrines, I completely lost interest in Oblivion.
As for D3, I think it'll be great. Apropos the orbs, I think their rationale for it (force in more strategy/thinking to the fighting) makes sense. In any case, there will still be potions.
Well, since everyone else is mentioning Moo3, and Spore, I just did as well. Awful at best.
I got Star Wars - The Force Unleashed for my Wii, disregarding the mediocre reviews. Now, the story is great but the gameplay is dull and hardly as lightsaber-awesome, as it should have been... Don't buy it. Even the duel mode isn't fun.
Oblivion got my negative vote as well. A bland mix really. Some excellent quests, but things just do not persist as well as they should. You are still regarded as an obnoxious stranger, even though you managed to become arena champion and grandmaster of the mages guild... Also, the level scaling of enemies and gear... Just... No... Morrowind was such an awesome experience and seem to have a lot more soul.
Red Alert 3... Sigh!
- I do strongly disagree with a lot of people here though (while skimming the replies). Left4Dead is amazing in a LAN, DawnOfWar 2 is also quite a fun game and Sins of a Solar Empire is nothing short of excellent. Period.
Now, if we could just get a release date for StarCraft 2...
After reading many replies, I have to throw in for MOO3. I followed that game's development like a stoner followed the Dead in the 80's. Every minute tidbit that came out, I was frothing at the mouth over. When it came out, I played it for maybe 3 hours before I got too bummed out and stuck it in a drawer somewhere.
When I randomly came across GC2 a month after it came out while in Brest Buy, I began playing it and it was as if the crashed and burned moo3 had risen from its ashes as a phoenix named Gal Civ2. When i still played WoW, GC2 took many hours away from that. Hmm, play a fun space game, or grind honor/ sit around waiting to do bg's.
Is Diablo 2 a sequel that you need to have played Diablo 1 to enjoy? I havent' played either, but I'd like to start playing Diablo 2. It can run ok on XP right? I have some older games that won't so I'm not sure. Also, probly buy it on ebay or something?
EDIT: I'm so glad i did a lot of research before i purchased Spore. Because that way, I DIDN'T BUY IT lol.
Oh and one more thing. I LOVED Mass Effect. LOVED it. (the PC version). However, that being said, the "Bringing Down the Sky" Expansion made me hate mass effect and its developers. The game ran beautifully until i loaded that stupid pointless piece of crap Addon that required the patch to play. After the patch, the sound was super glitchy regardless of what settings i tried, what drivers i used, and im certainly not buying new hardware because THEY screwed it up.
So now my profile is poisoned with this stupid patch, so if i want a new profile to start mass effect 2 with, i either keep the piece of crap buggy one, or play the whole damn thing over again. Last I knew, patches fixed things, not F-ed them up...
My last big disappointment?
Demigod. No contest. I really don't like the game. Honestly I consider preordering it my worst choice in years.
Oh, btw I'm all with Haree78 about L4D.
I love it. Best 2008 PC game in my opinion.
It's clever, polished, well tought, it looks good, it doesn't bother me with insane requirements and, god, it's fun as fuck if played with three friends on expert.
I've had a lot of disappointments in the past 1,5-2 years. In total more disappointments than in the prior 20 years. All of these disappointments come done to games being released buggy/unfinished/unplayable. To name a few: Pirates of the Burning Sea (they changed some of the game play dramatically going from beta to release, which made the game a totally different game suddenly), Hellgate (buggy, plus a really odd subscription model), Spore (insane DRM and the gameplay wasn't that great in the end), Demigod (riddled with problems/bugs).
Luckily, some good stuff came out too: Sins of a Solar Empire, The Witcher, Overlord, Fallout 3.
