Medieval 2 Total War
I looked forward to this game and followed the development up until the release. I even pre-ordered the "special" pack with a little statue of a gothic knight. But the game was lousy. The real time battles were enjoyable (after a few MEGA! patches) but the strategic side of the game was dull and the movement of the armies a drain. I liked the movement of HoMM IV, simple and got the job done, but M2TW's movement made the game a pain. The strategic AI was poor, there was no feeling of being outwitted by it. After much modding its still weird. I have to praise the work of my favourite mod Stainless Steel, it did alot to keep my interest, I only purchased the expansion because the latest version of SS, 6.1, needed it. I played M2TW for ages before realising to myself "no matter how hard you try, it is not going to satisfy you. It suggests that it will but it never quite gets there. A wonderful battle followed by strategic boredom". I loved MTW, M2TW was very over-rated by reviewers, but I guess they, like me, got caught up in it all.
I've been wanting to tell somebody that for ages, and none of my friends play games so they wouldn't understand.
Anyone else have a classic/memorable game disappointment moment?
I almost cried. I had such high hopes for Moo3.
Sammual
Europa Universalis? Civ4? GalCiv? In earlier years you'd be burned at the stake for less!
Bah. Let those in denial take their shots at me. It still will not make a bad game better.
That is just how I do things and think. Ultimately only I will be the judge if a game is good to me. Those 3 listed there are all completely about the hype that was generated. All are actually rather annoying to play. And no, it is not because I cannot handle the "scope" of them....I play my own custom maps on SINS that have 200-400 planets.
Good that you didn't mention Sins then, 'cause I've got stakes and torches all ready.
What the f...?!
Get some friends with the game and play it some more....jesus.
Me and my friends still play this about 3 times a week average at the moment, and most of us agreed the other day it's the best multiplayer game we have ever played.
If L4D was a dissapointment to you then you thought you were going to have fun in single player....
I played the demo in MP on the hardest difficulty with a few guys from the Demigod IRC. And other than constantly shooting Dopefish in the ass, it was pretty tedious and boring.
People have different tastes I happen to think L4D is incredibly shallow.
My last big disappointment was much more recent. When we got our tax return back, I was thinking "car repairs without me and grease involved", but my wife already had it spent.
But as far as games go, Starfleet Command comes to mind. The Dynaverse in particular. Right about the time I'd get a good bead on someone, the thing would crash and kick me out.
Maybe that's why she spent it?
Left 4 Dead was....adequate at best.
It was a great...and I mean great Multiplayer game. This game was never intended for single player mode.
That being said.....
The games was released with rediculous amounts fo bugs. My wife bought me the game on the day it was released and I suffered greatly through all of them. If it was not one thing, It was another thing. Skipping cresendos, bloacking survivor paths, rage quitting. It was nonsense.
But the two major flaws that put the nail in the coffin are -
A ) Not enough content. 4 short campaigns that never change. The "amazing" AI director becomes very predictable. Not even a map maker has been released yet. I know one day they will but I find it sad that game companies are starting to put less into their game and expecting the players to make their own content to fill in the rest.
B ) You. Not specifically you or the guy behind you. Basically the internet/gaming/I want it now generation group of people. This game was a game that relied heavily, no wait. That is an understatement. It COMPLETELY relies of teamwork and coordination. One player of your groups (Whether you are Humans or infected) can completely ruin the game for everyone.
This is a game that best played with known friends. Unfortunately not everyone has 7 friends in their side pocket that like FPS games, have computers powerful enough to play them, and can all get to together at the same time. Matchmaking has become almost, and I use that term lightly, completely useless.
yea, I played M2TW for a long time too. The AI was a big complain, but i heard it was a primary focus for the developer for Empire total war (out tomorrow). I watched and played the demo, and the AI can he really hard. They hired 3 scripters this to focus solely on AI, and now, they react like single units/squad instead of a whole scripted army. They flanked me several times and even elad me into a canyon with retreating troops, only have the top of the canyon lined with troops and a small force blocking the exit sandwiching me into the ambush. Hopefully, when i get my hands on it tomorrow, it will be everything I hope M2TW was suppose to be
I played through The Longest Journey again last month, to try and relive the old excitement of getting immersed in the storyline. It's sad, but nothing like that seems to be produced lately in the adventure genre. Even Dreamfall was all predictable, with boring puzzles and many plot holes. Nevermind the silly action scenes...
Yup, another MAJOR disappointment. All those promises, and what we get is a kindergarden sandbox. And they say that the potential for a great game is STILL in there, hardcoded, but EA wanted to tone it down and make it more 'light'.
I seriously doubt whether anyone bothers with Spore anymore, other than to design weird and silly creatures and vehicles. At least that part works well as a stress reliever from work- somewhat like the ship designer of GC2, but without a good game behind it.
Star Trek Legacy for one, but it probably wasn't as bad as Empire Earth 3. The Empire Earth series are basically RTS games with tons of eras, from stone age to space age. The first one was alright, the second one was just way to complex, and the third one was way to simple and childish. Instead of having 17 epochs, you had brass cannons fighting alongside nuclear bombers To make matters worse, all of the voiceovers were horrible. Not just bad quality, but the lines were just poor, most of them being aweful cheesy jokes, IE "Locked and loaded! Er, my gun that is". Almost all the lines were bad jokes, often times potty-humor. This game made STL look like a timeless piece of work.
Rome total war. The only feature I enjoyed was the pre-combat speeches, which KICKED ASS. Everything else was light.. and buggy. Even easier strategic map than Medieval. Some fantastic looks, but it was a smaller game. Count the unit types, if you would, and please compare to Medieval. Was not suprised that M2TW continued the process.
Master of Orion 3. I liked the look, but it was extremely buggy. It isn't as bad as everyone would make you think, but it was only good enough to let you know how good it should have been. Of course, in retrospect, for a project with the lead developer fired a year before release, along with half the dev team, it was better than I should have given it odds of. As for those who had only played MoO 2, well, I can't imagine what they were thinking.
Civilization III. It was slow, laden with pointless ugly 3d tiles, and there were many features that were in SMAC that deserved the full treatment. There were many bad spinoffs that should have made it clear what was not worth pursuing. It also was the game that made me realize that the editors, (and perhaps writers) of Computer Gaming World were a bunch of @#$%.
Warcraft III. It's 3d. Sadly, it set the standard for RTS graphics for years. It was neat, but there was no filling.
Supreme Commander. I don't know why they decided to go with three generic factions, rather than two different ones. Blame Starcraft? Good MP, but I can't in good conscience consider it better than OTA or TA: Spring.
I recently saw the trailer for the SPORE galactic adventures or whatever its called. More of the same, I am not wasting any more time or money on this series. The only parts of SPORE I enjoyed are the cell stage, and then the initial awe as you start the galactic stage. But it turned to disapointment as you figure out everything is the same everywhere you go. Just another randomly procedural generated world with random animals on it.
They should have made the Galactic stage into 2 parts. One where you are Captain Picard, going where no man has gone before, and the other half is building up a federation like a real space empire game would do. Like Gal Civ 2, but without all of the micromangement. Your race can build unlimited replacement ships, but no one else knows how to fly them I guess.
I must wonder, if their big seller was the creature generator, why the creature you have is completely irrelevant after the second stage.
Everything after the second stage is pure garbage, so it doesn't really matter.
Seriously, the Civilisation and Space stages are a joke. I've seen online flash games with more complexity and fun in their gameplay.
Supreme commander.
Just too much a hardcore gamer and a pain to update. The kind of game where you need to put your life into it to master it and have fun. And the defense far more too powerful that crash your units as if it was paper. Big, big disapointment, i am glad to have met SOASE just after !
Ahh I got a list too! Wait I shouldn't be HAPPY!
Age of Empires 3.... seriously what the hell the first 2 were great.... god.
Star Wars Empire at War... Hell Star Wars Warlords a mod for Homeworld 2 is way better then this piece of ****.
Deus Ex 2.... The first DE was amazing and they dube it down to this.... I really am already worried about the 3rd one, if this one gets screwed over too... someone needs to be jailed, and shot for these crap sequals.
Spore... I blam EA... and I blame EA for alot of things.
Star Trek Legacy.... was there any effort put into the game...
Halo 2 and 3.... Bungie became Microsofts well bitch to but it lightly... seriously 2 attempts on the game and the just cant do it... Way to go Bungie...
Ghost Recon was good but Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter wow garbage... I have an Xbox 360 lots of games I like on it... now I like a PS3 BUT not as many games I want on it and ya don't have lots of money to waste right now but if I did have a PS3 I would have MGS4 and Socom... I think you get my point.
The last Burnout game... Forgot the name cause it sucked... Takedown and Revenge were great but then LETS DO OPEN WORLD AND TAKE OUT THE GOOD FEATURES! THANKS EA! Me and my friends have a saying... "EA CAN SUXS MY BALLS!"
Battlefield... well console crap versions yep. Battlefield 2 was great... 2142 was a let down. Now they are doing 1943. Now I know the original 1942 was amazing... hopefully they do the series justice. But I am waiting for BF3 PC. Dice good luck.
Hmmm, my most recent would be Sacred II. I mean, hack and slash rpg; it's mindless fun, how can you go wrong?? But yeah, somehow they screwed it up. It started out fun, but leveling up just got boring and skill improvements were uninspired (OOOOo, 5% more damage, woohoo ). Titan Quest is soo much better (and I got it for $4).
Some interesting points have been made. Whoever said Civ 4 is poor needs to go to civfanatics and check out some mods, of note Fall from Heaven 2. Try and play that multiplayer for a great adventure, it is fantastic! (I'm not talking about the Fall from Heaven mod that shipped with Beyond the Sword)
So MoO3 has some mods that add to it? I'll have to try them out as MoO3 had potential but was ultimately stinky. I've been playing Space Empires 5 recently and its a great game. I was a little put out by the semi-realtime (you can pause and give orders at any time) combat but now am happy. The AI is not super but I love the "build your ship and direct in combat" part, lets hope this is implemented well in EWoM.
Battle for Wesnoth is a great game, its free so download and play. Its a bit like the old Fantasy General or the Panzer General series, with its own spin (such as unit upgrade tree rather than upgrade path) so expect a wargame rather than empire builder.
On a positive note, Dominions 3 is a great game too. (I'm highjacking my own thread and writing about good games )
Yeah, Space Empires 5 now seems pretty awesome, but only with the latest patch AND the great mod made by a fan (Balance mod, I think.) I haven't tried it yet, but most say it brings back the feeling of immense freedom of options that was the best part of SE4, plus a decent AI and only a few minor bugs. I'll try it when I have the time.
Unfortunately, MOO3 never did it for me, even with the mods. The game just doesn't feel fun to play.
Yes, Space Empires 5 with the Balance mod by Captain Kwok is very nice.
I'll still give MoO3 a go with mods because I paid $10 for it and so far have only got about $2 worth of value. You might say I'm a glutton for disappointment.
Aye, cook. It (Civ IV) gets good with expansions and mods, but I'm of the opinion that I shouldn't buy patches for a finished product. Vanilla was hopeless, therefore I'm not shelling out another full purchase price for an expansion, which lets me download user-made content that makes it a good game. I would rather fire up something else, as there are plenty of good games that I already own, such as Allegiance, which is def a contender for the best game nobody plays.
You don't need to. Play the older version that was finalized for vanilla. Then if you really like it you can shell out for BTS to play the current, spanktacular version. FFH2 justifies my purchase in a big way. I've gotten more time out of the mod than anything since the first Warlords:Battlecry, and I'm still playing it so even Half-Life is likely to get surpassed unless Elemental completely kills my interest in it.
