The game at a certain point and size begins to lag. I can't believe they can't fix this. The lag is THE SAME on lowest settings as it is on highest. RAM usage is 43% only on lowest setting and 65% CPU usages. The video card is a over clocked Nvidia GTX260. It isn't computer based lag. I don't know what the hell it is. Everything off and lowest setting and all details off the lag is exactly the same. (Entranched expansion version 1.01 this is on but it was the same on all versions). I tried it on my brother's SLI GTX 260, 8 gigs of ram and quad core. Same thing. At about a certain fleet size or game time ...can't tell which one it depends on really. The zoom first becomes sluggish..than out of the nowhere the game just comes to a crawl. You can destroy all your units and lower the settings...the lag stays.
The large fleet and huge maps are for me only
Have just finish a huge multistar game, with gfx setting on very high ( planet on high )... using 9 AI who are 9 different race, with the 7DS patner mod ( almost one gb size in 7zip format )... only difference with everybosy is that i use Linux ( not supported by Stardock ) for these mod, too much mini-dump ( memory limit ) or slowdown with windows...
Never forget that between your material and the game, you have the bios ( some are "defect" ), windows ( KB repair problem but sometime create new one ) and driver ( at sins release time, the nvidia was faulty ), directX and numerous dll... material itself or other software can be in some case a problem... 3 example from the readme file :
* If you're using Windows Vista, you MUST have speakers or headphones plugged in or thegame will crash.* Folding@Home will cause the game to crash. Please exit the Folding application before playing.* If you have a USB Missile Launcher, please detach it before playing the game or it willcrash the game.
It is why devs need a max of informations for resolve problem... maybe all the people who have problem now have something in common... can be a codex loaded in ram, or any other application running... or a very specific piece of hardware... if the code was so bad, everybody will have the problem...
What really need Stardock is a system like Bugzilla, allowing people with problem to make some entry, adding a lot of info about their system... posting problem on a forum is cute but it is not a profesional way to track problem and resolve them...
EDIT : one of the reason that in my case, it work better on Lunx is maybe my Xeon... on windows, i have 2 processor with 4 core... on linux, i have 2 processor with 8 core... these 8 core by processor are not real, it is the hyperthreading... on desktop computer, old single core processor ( pentium 4 with netburst architecture ) have hyper threading... dual core and core duo have not the hyperthreading...
For application running on one core where hyperthreading is possible, around 15% of speed is win... in case of artificial intelligence algorithms, speed win can reach 30%...
For the next generation of multicore, the i7, hyperthreading will be reintroduce in processor...
So, a old p4 prescoot 2M from 2005, running at 3.6 or 3.8 ghz with hyperthreading will have around 200% more power for sins that recent multicore processor... and if i am right, sins will run like a rocket on the new i7 processor with hyperthreading...
Boys, never think that new technology is always the best... my old ddr2 using a serial connection reach 32 gb/s ... modern ddr3 1600 have only 12.8 gb/s ... with so slow transfrer speed, processor starve for data...
EDIT 2 : People with a AMD Phenom and Vista can have problem with single-threaded applications... these can run on a core that is idling at half-speed... this is corrected in the Phenom II...
In theory, the AMD design made sense. If you were running a single threaded application, the core that your thread was active on would run at full speed, while the remaining three cores would run at a much lower speed. AMD included this functionality under the Cool 'n' Quiet umbrella. In practice however, Phenom's Cool 'n' Quiet was quite flawed. Vista has a nasty habit of bouncing threads around from one core to the next, which could result in the following phenomenon (no pun intended): when running a single-threaded application, the thread would run on a single core which would tell Vista that it needed to run at full speed. Vista would then move the thread to the next core, which was running at half-speed; now the thread is running on a core that's half the speed as the original core it started out on.

More, all phenon processor up to and including stepping B2 and BA have a TLB bug who lead to a performance drop of 10%... Sins ask a lot of power... 10% can make the difference between a normal game and a slow game...
I don't know, I ran the thing with minimun of anything running in the back ground. I even got rid of the wall paper.

And send an email to Ironclad. So this issue can be addressed sooner rather than later..
We've been following the threads and working on the issue. We are unable thus far to reproduce it on even our lowest spec machines. Without being able to reproduce it we can only theorize. Our current theory is something about your system is causing massive swapping. The new patch has massive memory savings which may help. If this continues to happen after the upcoming 1.02 patch, we'll be asking anyone with the problem to send a save game of when it is happening and their dxdiag info to support@ironcladgames.com.
You tell me what kind of a dxdiag you want and how I do that and I will produce you a saved game in 1.02 if the issue still exists with 1.02 ( I have yet to check, previous saved files do not work). I can't believe it doesn't do it on your machines, do you guys even get the slow down when the computer whispers on player vs AI only game? That one is pretty annoying as well. Thank you for showing interest in the issue and attempting to solve the issue.
How do I produce a dxdiag? Im having the same issue. If it helps at all, nvidia released new drivers for the 780i mobo and that greatly increased my performance in all my games. Everything runs perfect now except for sins, which sucks cause thats all I want to play. Though sins did get a decent performance boost. I can run it at about 20-27fps instead of 15. My specs are q6600@3.4, GTX 260 core 216, 3 gigs of corsair ram, x2 300gig hdd. Help
To produce a dxdiag (this is on XP, I'm assuming it's the same for Vista), go to the Start menu, then click on Run. Type "dxdiag" without the quotes, hit enter, and wait for the progress bar in the lower-left of the new window to complete. Then click the Save All Information button at the bottom of the window, choose Text File as the save type, and save it to the desktop. Email it, along with a description of the problem and a saved game file, to support@ironcladgames.com.
I'd also like to add myself to the list of people with this problem. It started a couple of months after the game was released, and has been happening ever since. Makes it nigh impossible to play.
Windows XP SP2
2GB RAM
512mb Nvidia 8800GT
Dual-core 2.66Ghz Intel Xeon
1 terabyte of HD space, recently defragged
I have the same problem...
Win XP SP3 32bit
2x2GB OCZ 1066 @ 800
Athlon 64 X2 +5200 @3.0Ghz
320GB HD
9600gt 512
i'll try to remember making a save when im playing again
in a previous post i mentioned somone with a 3.8 ghz quad core 4 gigs of ram 512 videocard is also having this crawling even tough his PC should be more then enough.... i'll ask him to get a save + dxdiag aswell..
Problem still persists with v1.16/v1.02.
Win XP x64
6GB of ram @ 800
E6850 @ 3.8Ghz (OC)
8800GS 384MB
Playing a 160+ planets map with 6 players and normal fleet size. This is actually pretty annoying, cause I lost my previous game with 250 planets in favor of the new patches.
Gonna send the dxdiag and a save to Ironclad - I encourage everyone to do the same thing.
im experienceing this problem on a much smaller scale... i have a compaq presario cq50 laptop with an 8200M video card and 3g ram vista 32 bit that will just start slowing down majorly after a long period of time, even tho the game is only using 698kb of memory, and in total im only using 50% of my physical memory, and 50% of my cpu.
im experiencing this problem in maps as small as sytems of war, and thats unacceptable, i find it very hard to beleve that i can play a game like company of heroes, sword of the stars, or even far cry 2 just fine on low settings but sins of a solar empire is somehow more heavy on requirements on the same low settings
sins is a good game my only beef with this game that makes it crapto me is its unstable like fucking nitrogylceren jesus MINI DUMP MINI DUMP MINIDUMP no other pc game i have played has crash crash crash like no tomarrow this gamedoes even after like 100patches rts rpg racing shooter fighter all the pc games ive played had no problem but you fire this thing up sins minidumps like a unstable bomb thats my only problem with it other then that sins of the solar empire is a great game it would be a perfect game if u could play it reasonably without a crash at every random monment in a day
EPIC FAIL until dev team fixes the product permanetly
forgot pc games cant be returned even though its defective product thats why people choose console games if the disc dont work send it back refund
Empire:Total War seems to have issues from what I've heard/read.... And are these MDs from SP or MP???
Hi,
Same issue here.. Game slows to a an insanely slow speed after a hour or so of playing. It dosn't matter what settings you use, I've turned off or lowered everything without seeing any change.Seems to happen faster with more AI players & larger maps.
My specs:
Windows XP Pro SP3
2GB DDR2 RAM
320 GB SATA HDD
512 Mb ATI Radeon 4850 Video card (I had a 256 Mb Nvidea 7900 GS OC since some posts said that this game may be haveing issues with the Nvidea cards so I bought a new ATI graphics card - still haveing the same issue)
So 1.02 did not fix the issue. I have huge slow downs equalling to 1 second game time for every 4 seconds real time.
Vista SP1
4g DDR2 ram
1TB Sata HDD
2.8ghz Phenom
Nvidia GeForce 9600
I have E:TW with no slow downs and no mini dumps even at max unit cap battles. Running max graphics also.
Update drivers, update direct x, check for any other missing windows updates, do a firmware update on your motherboard, scan for viruses, spyware, disable any real time scanners(Yes, I'm serious. Real time scanners aren't much use when you're not downloading porn off a warez site or opening email attachments from your senile relatives anyway, and they commonly screw up performance applications.), defrag your drive if it has more than 10% defragmentation, and then come back if you still have a problem. Naturally, you can check inbetween those.
Drive fragmentation is a problem by the way, even in big drives. When you look at your drive stats, you'll see seek time and sustained read/write speeds. If your drive has to seek to find the other half of a file, that's an interruption to that read/write speed. The less it has to seek, the faster it goes. A highly fragmented file can easily take twice as long to read without any trouble at all. I recommend getting a defragmenter like defraggler that shows file by file fragmentation too. You may find yourself looking at a two thousand fragment sins file. Highly unlikely since it doesn't have a main archive it's reading from, but there are plenty big enough to be heavily fragmented if you installed without cleaning the drive up first.
After doing to above, post a HiJackThis log if you're still hosed. It may be one of those glitchy software additions at fault. Plenty of crap out there to provide conflicts without being malware.
Wow??!
I love this games but the lag is driving me nuts towards endgame.... I can't believe this issue is still unresolved..
I lag like a loser end game with windows 7 4gb ram too lol. its so sad
Its like it suddenly comes. from smooth -> Lag.
Reduce your empire tree. It helps with FPS loss.
