I think it would be kinda cool if a hero dies with an artifact, the opposing side should be able to loot the corpse! Artifacts shouldnt have to die with it's original master. It would be fun trying to reclaim an artifact that I made/found. What do you guys think?
So it would not just be picked up by the next person? the ring was picked off its master when he died, it was only lost when it intentionally betrayed its bearer. I am ok with super items having enough will of their own to prevent themselves from falling in the hands of their enemy without a challange, but at the same time I think its a lot of cheese
Did someone mention boobytrapped items? As in, possibly cursed-might-even-go-boom-if-you-take-it-from-the-owner?
Figure this; Artifacts are not destroyable. Let me take this opportunity to seperate between artifacts (essentially very rare) and average items (low-quality magic items and the like). Someone dies, the killer gets a chance to pick up the items, send it to another hero - the works.
But here we can have an entire array of enchantment magics. Adding "attributes" to an item. It may be Soulbound to the wearer, rendering it useless to anyone except the one it's bound to. It may be cursed if the original wearer is killed, permanently attaching itself to whomever wears it (doesn't even necessitate the original wearer being killed - it might be a concious choice). It might even be booby-trapped, set to inflict a horrible disease, poison the antagonist that stole it, or explode in a ball of fire.
This, in turn, would allow for another array of magics, such as Identify (to identify an enchantment, curse, booby-trap or soulbinding), a Disenchantment spell to remove Soulbinding or re-apply it, a Decurse spell, etc.
Just popped into my head during the discussion.
Hmm. Definitely an intriguing idea. I'm not sure if I'd like it or not, though. It might be too complicated for too minor an aspect of the game, but it might also make for loads of wholesome entertainment. Your idea just made me think of something that happened in Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. If you intend to read it and don't want to know anything about the plot, then don't read the rest of this post. I'd put it in spoiler tags but we don't have any... Instead I'll make it orangey.
Anyways, it made me think of the scene where Zed was captured by Old World army outside the Wizard's Keep and was being forced to identify magic artifacts and items; he figures out that one of the items is a 'sunset box' or something, and that a drop of saliva would activate it - so he drools on it. A sunset box is basically a magic time bomb of massive proportions. Zed was right, and later that day the sunset box explodes, killing thousands of troops and allowing him to escape. Actually, even before that there was another good example. He placed an little toy box, enchanted with an ancient, powerful light spell, out in the field. When the Old World army set up for camp, one of the soldiers found the box and opened it; the resulting explosion killed over a hundred thousand people. That would probably be extreme for Elemental, but being able to do that kind of thing would be awesome! Planting an item that you've secretly enchanted to blow up or something where you think your enemy will stumble across it could be lots of fun!
Once a hero (or Sovereign) is slain, the victor should be able to loot any and all magical items left behind.
IF the victorious side doesn't have a hero to make use of these looted items, the regular troops should be able to pick the items up (but not use them...unless the items are meant to be used by regular troops).
Of course, any items that are being enchanted and powered by the defeated sides Sovereign should be returned to their original condition (whatever condition the item would be in once stripped of the defeated sides Sovereign's enchantments).
As far as being able to teleport magic items around, I would hope that you would need to research the spell to do so first (maybe make the 'teleport items' spell the precursor to 'teleport units' spell).
