Along with the news that Stardock was expanding was the announcement that they are working on an RPG! So what is it? Anyone care to guess? All I've heard so far is a rumor that they're trying to get the license for Planescape Torment. Does this mean a classic RPG for once, rather than all the next-gen/fps style rpg's that dominate the PC scene these days?
I didn't say it was awesome, just that it's the only one that tried to make an epic story. HotU in that regard was somewhat forgettable. MoTB had you talking to dead gods (and live ones!).
Throne of Bhaal was not bad (I loved having your own pocket plane ), I thought the Bhaal plotline was running thin by then. BG1 handled it best by throwing in some mystery, BG2 took it and ran with it but it really should've ended after Irenicus
I never got into Arcanum, so I couldn't say. But MoTB tried, damnit! One of the cool things I loved about Planescape: Torment was how all of your companions were unique. Floating skull, Githzerai, Succubus, walking rubics cube.. only MoTB really tried to recreate that feeling, giving you a solar, spirit bear, many-as-one.. unique companions that aren't just "generic fighter #10 with different name"
RPG... the best one was "Ultima"... the first version was on my Commodore 64 in the 80's... last one was on windows a little before the millenium change...
After, i have try NWN and the two add-on... great graphic but my love remain to Ultima serie...
So what is it? Anyone care to guess?
No really... just wait and see... i like surprise, specially when they are good one !!!!
Grammar Emergency!
Incorrect, sir! For the word "it", the possessive form lacks the apostrophe to make distinguishing between the two uses easier. The correct useage should have been "like it's its own setting".
And now to look for the inevitable grammar mistake in my own post...
As long as it isn't a CLICKCLICKCLICKCLICKCLICK...etc etc etc game like Diablo, I will be happy.
I would love a Mass Effect/FF mix set in the future. The whole middle ages RPG is getting a tad bit overdone.
I'll agree with this. A Sci-Fi RPG would be a very refreshing change!
A GOOD sci-fi rpg.
Well I figure the "good" part would be a given with SD at the helm.
With Lord Kona in my party!
It's not my fault you people can't form a coherent set of rules without a bunch of exceptions! And it's "usage", not "useage"!
So in a way, I agree with you - Baldur's Gate II should've stopped with Irenicus. I always found it a bit lacking. But on the other hand, the SERIES shouldn't have stopped with Baldur's Gate II, as a result.
And on the subject of speaking with dead gods, I actually agree. I'm somewhat a paragon of "don't overdo it", but speaking with Myrkul was actually a completely unexpected twist to me, it just fitted perfectly, and it's just a prime example of "Don't overdo it, but if you do, do it RIGHT!".
Edit: Screw these quotes.
Well, I don't know. I mean, what else was there to do? In the first game, you discovered that you were a Bhaalspawn and that Sarevok wanted you so that he could get the power. In the second, you already knew you were a Bhaalspawn, but found out that Imoen was your sister and also one, and that Irenicus wanted both of you so he can get the power.
I suppose if Throne of Bhaal was expanded into a third game it might have been good so you have some story epicness of who finally gets to replace him.. but at least as an expansion I think it went over the top a bit
Exactly! And it wasn't the only moment too. Even though in the game you could whack stuff left and right, Kelemvor still put you in your place too by telling you you're not anywhere near powerful enough to challenge a deity on his plane. I don't know, it was just a nice change of story where you get to do something unique. Forget dragons, cliched evil wizards.. you get to explore the more exotic and fun parts and places of the setting. The shadow plane, the whole mythos behind Myrkul, Kelemvor, and the Wall That alone gives the story a more epic feel! Evil wizards are easy
Bingo! And to make my earlier post more contributory, I'll add:
I really do look forward to someone developing a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. If rumours about PS:T and SD are correct, I'm not as excited as I might otherwise be. Though I respected the tech and story of Planescape: Torment, it wasn't in the setting that I most enjoyed. I just prefer classic (or cliche if you prefer) fantasy settings like Greyhawk or even Forgotten Realms.
We need another steampunk RPG, provided it doesn't hit you over the head with the whole TECHNOLOGY VS. MAGIC aspect. Arcanum is the only steampunk CRPG I remember.
I just hope it has stuff as cool as the wall of brain moles from Planescape torment. Planescape has so many things to form those would-be WTF moments (for people who weren't overly familar with the setting) and I love seeing them realized in something other than a book.
Edit: How about a Planescape-inspired fantasy universe with heavy steampunk influences? /Edit
Nothing like shooting shards of wyrdstone with a steampowered machinegun, riding a bear.
But Throne of Bhaal was the natural finishing of the Bhaalspawn saga, and I really couldn't see Baldur's Gate without it. You'd just be a random Bhaalspawn that just saved Suldennesselar(sp?) and sent Irenicus to hell. At the end of Baldur's Gate II, the Bhaalspawn saga was still left unresolved.
Yeah, not going to argue with you there.. it was a bit rushed. I actually liked the way it ended though. All your badassery really didn't matter in the end, and you only won because Kelemvor was nice and took pity on you..
But he let you get your crap out of the wall
Steampunk rawks my sawks. Seriously. If Stardock released a Steampunk RPG(or ay kind of game), I'd sell my soul to it.
What's most important in an CRPG: good dialog, memorable characters, lots of player choices (put the R in RPG ). If you hit those three, then the setting doesn't matter so much to me, but steampunk is still awesome.
Hehe! I know a great RPG they could do on the cheap! They give you the compiler and you get to role play as a programmer!
My point isn't that Planescape is bad. I'm just saying that there are other things that are much more important than the setting itself, and that between Planescape and a in-house Fantasy Steampunk setting, I'd take the Steampunk.
Personally, I think an RPG set in Sins of a Solar Empire would be cool. YOu could start out as a lowly cargo hauler who becomes the savior of the galaxy!! LOL
Seriously though, SoaSE is my choice for setting.
It could be done.. space rpg-ish been done, to an extent But, Ironclad owns the Sins IP, so SD can't actually make their own game on it at the moment.
Spelljammer, anyone?
