Having problems with explorer crashing? The Fences settings dialog crashing? Context menus not showing up properly? They're rare & far inbetween, but if this is you, please take the time to send in your diagnostics information.
In the latest build up on Impulse I've added some debug information catching / crash logging.
First: Update your copy of Fences to the v0.96 beta. Make sure you have "Show pre-release versions" checked in Impulse, and install it / reboot. From there, reproduce the problem you were having
Next: head to the Fences settings dialog. On the about page, there's now a button "Debug Info" ; give it a click. If you can't get the dialog open at all, go there directly by heading to "%appdata%\Stardock\Fences\TroubleshootingLog\". Email the file shown at that location ("fences_debug_info.txt"), along with a description of your problem and something along the lines of "Fences Debug Info" in the subject, to "fencesbeta" (at stardock).
Thanks, and happy testing!
I just installed Fences and was working with the program. I moved a second shortcut to a fence, and it crashed explorer. Explorer then restarted and things seem fine at the moment. I have XP Pro with SP3.
I use DPI scaling on Vista (larger scale, 120DPI). On some Fences the text overlaps or hangs out the edge of a Fence.
Overlap:
Hanging out edge of Fence:
kind of hard to get debug information when explorer is in a constant recycle loop. I ended up having to uninstall fences. I wouldnt say this issue is rare at all judging by responses here. I think you need to do better UAT before you let this out again.
The only thing I could gleam during this 40 minute unpleasentness was there appeared to be an issue with wallpaper. I change my wallpaper frequently but I dont reboot frequently. It sort of looks like Fences was trying to restore or do something against an image it no longer had.
Anyways... im not too terribly pissed at loosing time on this (since it is my development laptop im using this on) and that after so many years of using your products this is the first time in those many years I have had to grind my teeth to get the software uninstalled. So chalk it up I guess.

Hi Ken. Sorry for the inconvenience - what platform were you seeing this on. XP SP3?
Just downloaded the latest beta.. a nice tool
There are a few suggestions..
Add more shapes like circle, triangle, star etc and custom outlines...
Different customizable icon sizes for diifferent fences...like we can set 48 px, 32 px etc for each...
Backgroud images for each fences...
Thanks
After a fresh install of Fences, I can't get the application to run.
Install goes through error free, there is no problems until the end when it tries to run, or if I try to run it from the start menu. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling, rebooting, and even re-downloading and retrying the exe as well.
The Full Error I get is:
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.
Specs:WinXP Pro SP3Dual Monitor via Ultramon (1280x1024)x2
Not really sure why it's happening, it worked fine for me at home, now it won't at work.
Thanks in advance.

is it because i dont have admin-rights on this pc?
Did you email the log to fencesbeta@stardock.com ?
I have been using fences for two weeks without any problems, except the desktop wallpaper:
I use two monitors with 1600 x 1200px each and a 3200 x 1200px image as wallpaper set to tiled option. With fences running the image in the first monitor is cropped and tiled to the second one (see pictures)
While Running:

@disfarce, that sounds like the description of this problem reported here:
https://forums.wincustomize.com/339261
There was a Stardock response, but I'm not clear what it was meant to indicate as a solution or change to multi-monitor system configuration.
You can add me to the list of users with endless Explorer crashes. I uninstalled Fences but I can't find your debug file. I'm runniing Vista Home Premium SP1 x64 on a very new i& 920 machine with 6 GB RAM. It had been running fine until the most recent update.
Having lots of issues with Fences. XP SP3, running Fences v0.96.1583 Beta
All the issues seem to revolve around explorer.exe:
Explorer will occasionally just crash, and drwatsn seems to be involved too - if I go into Process Explorer (taskman replacement) and kill drwtsn and explorer, and run a new copy of explorer it will generally be OK again for a while, but every so often it completely crashes and the only solution is a power off reboot.
The other issue I've noticed is that my Show Desktop icon in quick launch will invariably, after about a day, stop working and display an out of memory error (I'd quote it verbatim but I've just reloaded explorer so it's not doing it at the moment, but it will return).
Oh, and a minor bug which I've noticed is that when I launch Call of Duty 4 (which changes screen res to run) when I close it down, the icon has always escaped from it's fence. No idea about that!
I emailed my logs to the relevant email address maybe a week ago but didn't hear anything back.
Any ideas? I like this program as it definitely provides a useful feature, but the constant issues with explorer when doing utterly mundane tasks such as renaming a file, opening a shortcut's properties to amend something or even simply right clicking on the desktop are really beginning to annoy me. Are there any updates scheduled for the imminent future?
Logs just emailed again, I'd paste them but it's up to 295kb!
Thanks,
Phil
(need any more info just ask, I'm quite geeky so don't mind if you get technical).
Hi, I'm having a problem with multiple desktops.
I have two desktops, my Primary is placed on the right and my secondary (which is my TV) to the left. When downloading or saving files to the desktop all the icons are placed on the secondary instead of the primary (because it's to the left side).
If it was just two monitors there wouldn't be a problem just to switch places between them, but as it's my TV, which isn't always on, I have to rearrange my entire living room to fix this problem and that seems a bit exaggerated
It's really annoying, specially when you think you have downloaded or saved a file but you can't find it cause it's on the TV screen which is often turned off ...
Hopeing for a solution! Thanks!
/Marcus
Fences is pretty great - just what I was looking for to tame my insane desktop.
One issue I've noticed: occasionally I lose drag-n-drop functions where I can't drag icons around the desktop, to the Recycle Bin, etc. When Fences makes up its mind to do this, I get the black-circle-with-slash-thru-it when attempting to drag.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Always willing to beta test, too.
JohnB
ps: I've uploaded my debug file.
I've had the same issues as Marwood and I'm also running XPSP3. I just reisntalled Fences after updating to the latest Impulse, so I don't know if this is still the 3/18/09 version of Fences or a new one. In my case, I just did the install and have only had one explorer crash, from which I recovered, so that's an improvement at any rate. Please let me know if there is a newer version than the 3/18 build.
I've done some further checking and I am still getting the explorer crash loop under XPSP3.
Arrange Icons By... name, size, type, modified ? I miss it.
Please make it available at least arrange by name in different fences....
@hselburn
So I'm not crazy!!
@stardock
So far it's been a month, and there's been no word on any update, or even acknowledgement of this fairly serious problem on XP SP3 (and from looking at the comments elsewhere it doesn't seem to be restricted to the two of us here). Have you any plans to address this or fixes in the pipeline?
Also from reading comments on download.com it appears that uninstallation doesn't work either. For the moment I can deal with it, but I have had a couple of occasions when I've lost work in progress (although so far, nothing terribly important) because of a severe explorer crash which forces a reboot. When it crashes like this absolutely nothing responds - not icons, not the taskbar, not ctrl-alt-delete to manually restart explorer, it's completely frozen.
Please, can you look into and address these concerns as it certainly as the potential for awesomeness, but at the moment is jsut too unreliable.
I am going to look into removing any programs that hook into explorer.exe, and see if that fixes anything. If it does, I'll post back.
I'm running Fences 0.96, and I have a bug, but it's not a "Crash" bug, just an annoyance. Yes, Explorer has crashed on me once or twice but so far rebooting has resolved most of the issues I've had, however, one annoyance has not gone away.
I have DreamXP installed and whenever I activate Fences it reverts to a black wallpaper with a faded edge on the bottom and right, and no matter how I apply or run DreamXP it will NOT change the wallpaper. I can change back to a static wallpaper, but Dreams simply vanish behind that default featureless black. Since it's not crashing do you guys still want the log submitted?
I'm running XP home with all the latests updates installed, WindowBlinds, DreamXP, and Fences. Do you need version numbers or anything else? What can I do to help you guys trouble shoot / isolate this bug?
I put it in the wrong thread.. sorry.
I've dloaded n installed fences a week ago.WinXP pro sp2.I loved it.My only prob is that my cursors change while im in a window(not a fence window). It usually change into the cursor that can get a fence biger or smaller <-->(like this but vertical).Sometimes in firefox my cursor isnt responsive to links that a web page has.minimizing the firefox window n max it again might solve it.All the above are random(i mean i can get them right after boot or hours later) but frequent too.
Im sure its a fences prob cause uninstalling it fixed all this probs.I have it installed again now but its really annoying, espessialy when u cant navigate in a web site (no links react).
I really dont want to unistall it so any help will be much apreciated. Thank you!
I have an odd problem with fences.
Whenever I lock my computer and come back, I will have three windows explorers sessions open to:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
If I disable fences, it doesn't happen, and then immediately comes back when I enable fences again.
By the way, fences is one of the best ideas I've seen in a while!
Tim
eek! indeed, tim, we noticed this as well and were able to pin it down. we'll be releasing an update to fix this soon!
Hi
I have a similar problem to Tim in that when dragging a shortcut from the start menu using Ctrl+drag explorer pops up several windows with the same location as Tim's. This is only on the new version (as far as I can remember). Also trying to dismiss the use settings dialogue box on install still opens the settings box.
I too would like (having read the posts):-
i) ability to have different shape fences (only for the fun of it!)
ii) the ability to organise icons by name etc. inside each fence - a must when there are lots of icons to trawl through
iii) how about the ability to colour each fence individually to hilight its contents!!!
That's all I can think of for now. Keep up the good work.
Francis
I just started having a problem.
Fences will not allow me to add new items to an existing fence nor will it allow me to build a new fence and add items to it.
Same things happens on Vista or XP.
Anyone else see this?
Arnold
Arnold - I think there might have been a problem with the last installer - could you try uninstalling/reinstalling?
