Well I was lucky enough to get a hold of the recently released private beta of DOW2 (for Soulstorm owners, next week it goes public) and I thought I'd share my opinions with everyone as well as get the chance to hear the views of fellow gamers. Note my experience relates to 3v3 matches, the beta also allows for 1v1 matches.
Introduction
Right off the bat, if you have played and loved any or all of the previous entries in the DOW series you will be throwing away most of what you know and are used to. DOW2 resembles Company of Heroes far more than its actual forefather and while this is no means a bad thing it is certain to ruffle a few feathers.
Setting Up The Game
Firing up the game through Steam, you will be treated an excellent pre-rendered scene that is comparable to that of the original DOW, many of you will recognise it from long released media but it never gets old. Into the home screen now and you have a few choices at hand. Firstly you will have to create/log into a Games For Windows Live account, if like me you have a Live account for your 360 you can simply use that. If not you will need a Windows Live Passport (essentially a hotmail or associate MS account). Now having signed in, you can persuse through the options menu which will allow you to tinker with most graphic settings as well as sound and control options. As far as I can tell, in the beta there is no option to bind keys.
After hitting what you think is your performance sweet spot (use COH as a reference as DOW2 uses an enhanced version of the same engine - Essence Engine 2.0 for the curious-) you jump into the multiplayer option. From here you can either allow the Games For Windows matchmaking system to find a game for you, peruse through a lobby or create your own custom game. Starting from scratch the Trueskill system seemed to do its job well enough as from 4 games I was never hopelessly outclassed nor was I ruthlessly crushing the dreams of innocent young lambs.
Much like the beta of Demigod you can set up a game so that you are only versing computer opponents. Use it as a quick baptism or for a casual game but get out of there asap if you are looking for a competitive game. I'm no mug but nor am I a gung-ho wannabe-pro when it comes to RTS but the AI posed little challenge, even at high levels.
Phew, lots of info to digest! I'm sorry about the long winded nature of the content but I figured I'd give most everything a run down. Joining a game lobby will see you making your choice of race (Space Marines, Eldar, Orks, Tyranids) and your commander type. (it varies from race but generally it's Attack, Defence, Support). You also have the option to invite up to two of your buddies into the match. Once connected properly to a game lobby you can change round you race/hero choices and chat to your allies. Normal fare here.
Come match time you start with your commander and 1 unit of your lowest tech troops. All 3 bases are right next to each other and each building is essentially the only building each team will get so treasure them. Once again COH veterans will be familiar with game types; Victory Point Control and Annihilation. Essentially both games will boil down to one side dominating the capture points. All capture points can be taken by infantry units or hero units but to my knowledge no vehicle can take a point.
Resources
Resources are broken into Power and Requisition. Req points need only be captured to yield +11 points/min. Power points need first be captured for a +2/min yield, then need to be invested in with Req to activate and then lay down up to 3 generators for a maximum yield of +19/min.
My impression is that this game is geared towards resource scarcity. Unless you are completely dominating all the resource locations you will in no way be able to spam units (i'll deal with spamming later). This will force you to treasure your units at hand. You WILL use cover and you WILL learn when to retreat. However, as a reward for clever tactics, squads thatstay together will gain experience and level up. Currently this leads only to increased HP and perhaps increased damage (the only stat visible is HP so I'll unsure). However, squads do not gain new abilities with levels which is a bit of a downer but it could change with DLC.
Commanders
Onto Commanders... Commanders are useful creatures, usually providing you with a means to turn the tide of battle to your favour. So far i've made use of the Space Marine Commander (A), SM Tech Marine(D), Eldar Farseer(S), Eldar Warlock(A) and Tyranid Hive Tyrant(A). So it has been Attack/Support primarily. Commanders don't start out too flash and can easily be downed if you aren't awake to danger. Once downed you can either pay Req to revive them, starting out at roughly 700 points, capping down at 250 once enough time has elapsed. Or an allied hero can revive them. Either one proves to be a pain in the midst of battle so be sure to look after them.
Like units they too level up and like normal units they do not gain abilities based on their levels. Instead their abilities are tied to either purchasable wargear or to the Tech level of your base (starting at 1 and capping at 3). Furthermore abilities generally cost a combination of Req/Power AND each races unique ability currency e.g Zeal/Waaagh etc. There is a nice assortment of abilities, ranging from relatively low cast enhancements to massively expensive game-turning ones. You will never get tired of blowing 900 zeal (of a possible 999) and 900 Req points to drop a squad of terminators on your opponent.
Population Cap
Your population is capped at 100 and you are only given 8 or so unit choices to fill that roster, some of which are merely different permutations of the same unit i.e Heavy Bolter Devastator Squad and Plasma Cannon Devastator Squad. Tech 1 units can and most likely will be carried through to Tech 3 and there are some nice goodies to be had at the higher tiers. Coming back to that spamming line i mentioned earlier, the pop cap coupled with the Req/Power cost of units will likely prevent many players from spamming game turning units. Dreadnoughts, Wraithlords, Carnifexes and co. are hard to obtain and units like Terminators and Venerable Dreadnoughts, which rely on Zeal can be at times nigh impossible to gain access to. This makes strategising your unit choices essentially your highest priority.
Many players will find the choices limiting and will be left wondering why so many units were left out. Swallowing my own dissapointment, the best answer I can give is that tactical nature of the gameplay lends itself to fewer more specialised squads. So while it would be awesome to have Striking Scorpions AND Howling Banshees, having both would prove to be redundtant. There is however hope, as Relic has promised there will be (free?) DLC to expand on the game, although mum is the word on the actual content right now.
Final Thoughts
So far it would seem that DOW2 is really COH:41st Millenium, which at heart is really the truth. Funnily enough, at times I actually felt DOW2 was channeling Demigod, with the way in which you must utilise your commanders and the ebb and flow of the battlefield. Ultimately though, DOW2 may alienate players migrating from DOW1. Compared to the zany, frenetic gameplay of the original, DOW2 has taken a more measured, tactical approach ala COH. Once I found my groove though, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Once again sorry for the epic rambling nature of the post but once i'm on a roll I tend to be nigh impossible to stop. If anyone has any questions I will do my best to answer them and I'd be more than happy to discuss the game with fellow beta testers. Finally if anyone wants to play a game with me, pm me. But bear in mind I do reside in Australia, i am somewhat of a night owl but there are limits if you crazy kids come from somewhere in the northern hemisphere/other side of the world.
cheers all!
Well it is a beta (albeit, one built off the game's gold or post gold) programming so you can expect the odd inconsistency to pop up.
Anyone else digging the balance so far? As I mentioned before some people are taking grief with shuriken cannons, techmarines as well as shot gun scouts and to a lesser extent, assault marines but I personally think they all play pretty well. They are open for power plays but can be countered with a bit of poise and patience. Hopefully they'll give the option most RTS have to up the match resource rate come the Day One patch, since req accrues just a bit too slowly. My biggest gripe - and it is a truly game breaking one - is the lack of lightning claws for the marines... ...just think of all the awesome sync kills that have been forsaken in imaginationland.
Well im happy with Relic's effort, now I just hope someone decides to develop the antithesis of DOW2...Epic 40k. Something like Supreme Commander meets Total War but even bigger. Emperor Titans, Tyranid Biotitans, Tau Mantas and battalions of vehicles/infantry. Indulge my dreams Stardock! You've already got two ace RTS developers onside in GPG and Ironclad Games. Ah, if only it were that easy, if only.
For now i'll be happy if DoW2 is as successfull as DoW so i can get all the armies up to Sisters of Battle (not being very popular means them being the last army added...).
As i only play against AI, i cannot really talk about balance. Requisition feels slow, specially if you play with Space Marines. But it annoys me that i cannot reinforce those points... what at the same time, makes them more valuable. Even if my HQ give lots more req. points, those small extra points means a lot to my expensive chapter brothers...
I would enjoy a W40K game in the lines of the old Laser Squad. But an Epic 40K would be nice too.
Well, I've played the dow2 beta quite a bit, in fact I'm up to 16 hours played already according to Steam. Initially I thought it sucked, I really did. Entering buildings looked boring, the graphics weren't even that nice (I am DD - demigod-damaged), few units and almost no buildings to build. However, because it already feels soooo balanced, I still enjoyed it immensely.
The tactical aspect in Dow2 is perfectly executed.
If I had any grief with the game so far, it is that losing a within the first minutes of the game can easily decide the outcome of the game.
my first impression: WHAT A MESS
Exactly my first impressions. A tip: don't play as the tyranids on your first games.
I was actually close to complain on the relic forums and ask them how thay could have created such a mess. Then i played a couple of hours more and started to understand the flow. And i thought it was an ok game. Now... I'm completely hooked
I love it! When you play 3 vs 3 with 2 friends it's a blast. The beta goes public next week. I suggest you check it out.
Cheers
prefer COH tbh
I snagged one of the free beta keys Eurogamer is giving out. As of the current time, there's about 1700 left if anyone wants in the beta and doesn't want to buy Soulstorm.
couldnt you have told me that this morning...!
There's slightly under a thousand left, so you should be able to get one easily.
lol i played as the Tyranids my first game and won against AI. I still suck as SM tho
played a little more games and i have to say that my opnion are better now than first impression.just the time to be used to this type of gameplay, and figure out the many tactical choices of heroes/gears/unit combination.
with DEMIGOD and dow2 we'll have two new fresh games
altough i'm attracted more by DG,for graphic style and gameplay.
You could always try to find Chaos gate. But thats 10+ years old.
I think we need a good 40k moive, maybe even during the horus heresy (I don't want a movie that revolves around just one chapter/legion... and knowing GW it would either be a new chapter that they make just for the movie or... smurfs)
Inquisitor was.... bad to say the least. And it makes no sense fluff wise.
Oh yeah, I'd love a good 40k movie. The old warhammer comics were some of the best comics I've ever read. And they've got the 40k mmo in the works. Maybe in 10 or so years, if that mmo is successful, we will see a movie worth watching.
One movie set in the trenches of a backwater feral planet, with the imperial guard fighting of an invasion of Tyranids.
One movie set on a Hive world, with an Arbiter as the protagonist, investigating a cult of heretics following the murder of an official, resulting in widespread unrest (and the response of the authorities).
Yet another movie could be set with a group of acolytes in the service of the Inquisition, and what that entails - this could be a stark contrast to how the inquisition was portrayed (in passing) in the previous movie, as the backroom dealings of the Inquisition is revealed, as well as the issue of Radicals vs. Puritans.
The setting of WH40k is just to enormous to show in a single movie or from a single perspective.
As long as Uwe Boll isn't involved...
ok, my final impression:
Game IS crap
How good are the controls to move your view around? After playing SupCom, Sins and Demigod I find it restrictive to not be able to use cursor zoom in other games.
In Demigod, using WASD to move the camera with Q and E to rotate really works for me. Can the DoW2 beta be set up like that?
For movies, Damnatus was decent if you can get your hands on it with subtitles. Shame Games Workshop blocked its release as a result of German law.(Pretty sure the problem was that the people who made the movie had full rights to everything in it and couldn't transfer their rights as a result of the law.)
If a new movie is made by Games Workshopt, it might be nice for it to be a documentary. Have a narrator go over several important moments in 40k history. It would also help introduce the 40k universe to new people.( I first learned about 40k from DoW 1. Despite not having any models or books I have picked up decent knowledge about 40k over time.)
Cam controls are currently at a very basic RTS fare. With the latest patch you can zoom right into the action for sync kills and eye candy. You can zoom out far enough to see essentially your squad/squads area of operations and no more. Given the smaller scale of the engagements, it is really quite enough though. Unfortunately, the WASD keys do not effect the camera orientation and as the beta does not allow you to bind keys, there is no option but to ALT+mouse movement.
Open beta available tomorrow 1/28 for everyone.

For me, half the fun of RTS games is building and fortifying a base. securing resources and climbing the tech tree. I'm not too happy about the beta, but i'll give it more chances to impress me before i delete it (unlike the FEAR 2 demo).
However i'm completely hooked to Soulstorm now, yesterday night i assaulted the Imperial guard stronghold as the Sisters of Battle. Finally, after losing twice to a Baneblade, (that thing makes a C&C mammoth tank look VERY harmless), i finally was able to cut their supplylines, and that marked the beginning of the end for IG. That one mission was more difficult and elaborate than all of RA 3 final missions combined. I've heard the Tau stronghold is a tough nut to crack too, looking forward to give that a shot.
The Tau one was pretty hard, but I actually thought the Imperial one was harder. #*&$ing Baneblade. The Sisters stronghold was just stupidly annoying. Their super unit is invulnerable and makes everything around invulnerable until you destroy a bunch of her statues (which she freely teleports between). So you start fighting around a statue, they send all of their units at you, angel teleports in and wee everything's invulnerable and only then you can have a few squads damage some other statue. By then your force is wiped out by the invuln force, so you have to rebuild and do it again That's what made me stop playing it I think: "No way in hell am I doing this with every race..."
There's just so many mean tactics you can employ as a Dark Eldar. If it's anything like the other Strongholds, the relic unit plays a large role, and the Dais of Destruction is my all-time favourite unit, all bloody games, all categories.
Dark Scythe goes bzzazaaaaapt. My friends that I played multiplayer free-for-all with started ganging up on me in the end. Then suddently the fourth friend shows up and they are all fighting amongst themselves again, and in the middle of a huge brawl between three enemies, I show up and destroy their entire armies.
