Well I was lucky enough to get a hold of the recently released private beta of DOW2 (for Soulstorm owners, next week it goes public) and I thought I'd share my opinions with everyone as well as get the chance to hear the views of fellow gamers. Note my experience relates to 3v3 matches, the beta also allows for 1v1 matches.
Introduction
Right off the bat, if you have played and loved any or all of the previous entries in the DOW series you will be throwing away most of what you know and are used to. DOW2 resembles Company of Heroes far more than its actual forefather and while this is no means a bad thing it is certain to ruffle a few feathers.
Setting Up The Game
Firing up the game through Steam, you will be treated an excellent pre-rendered scene that is comparable to that of the original DOW, many of you will recognise it from long released media but it never gets old. Into the home screen now and you have a few choices at hand. Firstly you will have to create/log into a Games For Windows Live account, if like me you have a Live account for your 360 you can simply use that. If not you will need a Windows Live Passport (essentially a hotmail or associate MS account). Now having signed in, you can persuse through the options menu which will allow you to tinker with most graphic settings as well as sound and control options. As far as I can tell, in the beta there is no option to bind keys.
After hitting what you think is your performance sweet spot (use COH as a reference as DOW2 uses an enhanced version of the same engine - Essence Engine 2.0 for the curious-) you jump into the multiplayer option. From here you can either allow the Games For Windows matchmaking system to find a game for you, peruse through a lobby or create your own custom game. Starting from scratch the Trueskill system seemed to do its job well enough as from 4 games I was never hopelessly outclassed nor was I ruthlessly crushing the dreams of innocent young lambs.
Much like the beta of Demigod you can set up a game so that you are only versing computer opponents. Use it as a quick baptism or for a casual game but get out of there asap if you are looking for a competitive game. I'm no mug but nor am I a gung-ho wannabe-pro when it comes to RTS but the AI posed little challenge, even at high levels.
Phew, lots of info to digest! I'm sorry about the long winded nature of the content but I figured I'd give most everything a run down. Joining a game lobby will see you making your choice of race (Space Marines, Eldar, Orks, Tyranids) and your commander type. (it varies from race but generally it's Attack, Defence, Support). You also have the option to invite up to two of your buddies into the match. Once connected properly to a game lobby you can change round you race/hero choices and chat to your allies. Normal fare here.
Come match time you start with your commander and 1 unit of your lowest tech troops. All 3 bases are right next to each other and each building is essentially the only building each team will get so treasure them. Once again COH veterans will be familiar with game types; Victory Point Control and Annihilation. Essentially both games will boil down to one side dominating the capture points. All capture points can be taken by infantry units or hero units but to my knowledge no vehicle can take a point.
Resources
Resources are broken into Power and Requisition. Req points need only be captured to yield +11 points/min. Power points need first be captured for a +2/min yield, then need to be invested in with Req to activate and then lay down up to 3 generators for a maximum yield of +19/min.
My impression is that this game is geared towards resource scarcity. Unless you are completely dominating all the resource locations you will in no way be able to spam units (i'll deal with spamming later). This will force you to treasure your units at hand. You WILL use cover and you WILL learn when to retreat. However, as a reward for clever tactics, squads thatstay together will gain experience and level up. Currently this leads only to increased HP and perhaps increased damage (the only stat visible is HP so I'll unsure). However, squads do not gain new abilities with levels which is a bit of a downer but it could change with DLC.
Commanders
Onto Commanders... Commanders are useful creatures, usually providing you with a means to turn the tide of battle to your favour. So far i've made use of the Space Marine Commander (A), SM Tech Marine(D), Eldar Farseer(S), Eldar Warlock(A) and Tyranid Hive Tyrant(A). So it has been Attack/Support primarily. Commanders don't start out too flash and can easily be downed if you aren't awake to danger. Once downed you can either pay Req to revive them, starting out at roughly 700 points, capping down at 250 once enough time has elapsed. Or an allied hero can revive them. Either one proves to be a pain in the midst of battle so be sure to look after them.
Like units they too level up and like normal units they do not gain abilities based on their levels. Instead their abilities are tied to either purchasable wargear or to the Tech level of your base (starting at 1 and capping at 3). Furthermore abilities generally cost a combination of Req/Power AND each races unique ability currency e.g Zeal/Waaagh etc. There is a nice assortment of abilities, ranging from relatively low cast enhancements to massively expensive game-turning ones. You will never get tired of blowing 900 zeal (of a possible 999) and 900 Req points to drop a squad of terminators on your opponent.
Population Cap
Your population is capped at 100 and you are only given 8 or so unit choices to fill that roster, some of which are merely different permutations of the same unit i.e Heavy Bolter Devastator Squad and Plasma Cannon Devastator Squad. Tech 1 units can and most likely will be carried through to Tech 3 and there are some nice goodies to be had at the higher tiers. Coming back to that spamming line i mentioned earlier, the pop cap coupled with the Req/Power cost of units will likely prevent many players from spamming game turning units. Dreadnoughts, Wraithlords, Carnifexes and co. are hard to obtain and units like Terminators and Venerable Dreadnoughts, which rely on Zeal can be at times nigh impossible to gain access to. This makes strategising your unit choices essentially your highest priority.
Many players will find the choices limiting and will be left wondering why so many units were left out. Swallowing my own dissapointment, the best answer I can give is that tactical nature of the gameplay lends itself to fewer more specialised squads. So while it would be awesome to have Striking Scorpions AND Howling Banshees, having both would prove to be redundtant. There is however hope, as Relic has promised there will be (free?) DLC to expand on the game, although mum is the word on the actual content right now.
Final Thoughts
So far it would seem that DOW2 is really COH:41st Millenium, which at heart is really the truth. Funnily enough, at times I actually felt DOW2 was channeling Demigod, with the way in which you must utilise your commanders and the ebb and flow of the battlefield. Ultimately though, DOW2 may alienate players migrating from DOW1. Compared to the zany, frenetic gameplay of the original, DOW2 has taken a more measured, tactical approach ala COH. Once I found my groove though, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Once again sorry for the epic rambling nature of the post but once i'm on a roll I tend to be nigh impossible to stop. If anyone has any questions I will do my best to answer them and I'd be more than happy to discuss the game with fellow beta testers. Finally if anyone wants to play a game with me, pm me. But bear in mind I do reside in Australia, i am somewhat of a night owl but there are limits if you crazy kids come from somewhere in the northern hemisphere/other side of the world.
cheers all!
Hey since you posted.. I have Soulstorm off Steam (and currently at work). Will it pick it up automatically and offer me the beta (which I understand is also on Steam?) or is there something special I have to do to grab it? I've been looking forward to it, and would love to jump in as soon as I get home.
I own the retail version and I had to go to the 'My Games' tab and click 'Activate a product on Steam'. Once there I simply inputted my CD-Key (manually inserting the hyphens mind you) and then restarted Steam. Then I went back to 'My Games' and DOW2 was there. I imagine you should be able to do the same as me, though one would think it should pick it up automatically. In your case you can really bet either way. It is a hefty download too, weighing in at just over 2 GB. And yeah, the beta is Steam only so in the end you will need a Steam account and a GFW Live account.
I just bought Soulstorm through Steam (only 3,75 €), and the DoW 2 beta appeared immediatly on My Games list. I suppose it should appear for you too. There is a store page for it, but it's only for the public beta, there doesn't seem to be a way to identify as SS an owner.
Thanks guys Been looking forward to DoW 2 for a long time, can't wait to try it out. Always liked squad-based/limited build games more than spam-fests!
i have soulstorm but no steam account and the steam site seems to be unaccessable. Is there an other way to download a steam client?
People that expects DoW2 to be DoW1 v2.0 better change their mind asap. If they didn't like CoH, there is also a good chance of not liking DoW2. That doesn't mean that DoW2 is a bad game because it's not. It's quite fun, fast, frenetic... In any case, the best way to value DoW2 is to play it (public Beta the 28th of this month...) and judge it because of what it is and not about what DoW1 or CoH were.
I don't do multiplayer because i'm stupidly shy, have no mic (why should i? And not that my spoken english is so good... and the spoken english of some "natives" isn't so good either) and other few details, but i'll try it one day to try to get some shiny stuff that you get as you earn ranks in each race of the game while playing online (just visual stuff, no more benefits). Meanwhile i'm just playing against a single AI (always against Orks, even if i chose random enemy, because i have lots of fun fighting them) in 1vs1.
The easy AI seems to be quite easy to the point of being strange when they make me lose any point at all. But it's nice to start playing and being able to test your army. The normal AI seems to be more competent, making the game more fun altough it's still somehow easy. I use to play Difficult level in DoW and it seems that once i know better the different armies, i'll probably end playing in a similar difficulty level in DoW2 (which i'm not sure if it's good or bad).
Of the four armies the only one i haven't played is Orks. With Tyranids i have tried with the Hive Tyrant, with the Eldar i tried the (sexy) Farseer and all the three Space Marines commanders. All of the commanders has been interesting but i have prefered to focus on the SM (lack of Adeptas Sororitas...).
The Space Marines are frakking expensive. They are elite guys and you have to pay a high price to recruit one unit and they also take a big chunk of your 100 capacity points (basic Tactical Marines cost 500 requisition points and take up 15 cap points). They are strong, with lots of life and very useful, but still vulnerable without the proper support (i'm sorry but one squad of marines won't stop an horde of orks no matter how elite they are). So for them is even more important to make sure that you keep your units alive, hitting the retreat button whenever the situation becomes dangerous. In the easy and normal level, the AI seems to use it a lot and my newbiness prevents me to understand if it's because i'm doing things right or if the AI is a coward. In any case, i have get used myself to use it as needed, because to lose one Space Marine squad is quite a set back. Also, units that survive get experience of killed units so you want to make sure that your leveled units stay in play as much as possible.
All the commanders have 4 global skills (SM have 5) that can only be used spending some racial points that can only be earned through killing enemies. Playing 1vs1 is quite difficult to be able to play any unless the game stalls. I'm sure that playing with more players will allow to play them often.
Resources are extremely important, requisiton being (at least in 1vs1) the most scarce unless you keep on fighting for it all the time as you cannot fortify the requisition points and you will have the enemy decapping them as soon as they find the chance. The energy points can be fortified and as long as you can keep at least one fully upgraded, you won't be in much trouble. In the case of the Space Marines and their expensive units, you must be careful with your investments. They are really expensive (and good).
Troubles? Games for Windows Live. I don't dislike it and won't see me whinning like some trolls and emos in the beta forums, but i find myself alt-tabbing before i try to log in so i can disable my firewall so it allows me to connect. Once it's done, alt-tab again to enable the firewall. Also, the AI seems to do weird things sometimes, like the massive Warboss standing idle while i shot him to near death my a squad of marines and my apothecary, until he decided to retreat. The game itself hasn't given me any problem expect the last time i played, when the game froze for unkown reasons when i was close to win another match against a mekboy and his boyz. Everything else has been fine for me. Other people hasn't been so lucky.
The game needs some bigger icons for some units and skills as well as more unit info as right now we barely have any usefull info.
Some pics in not so high graphics:

Eldar squads under cover
Howling Banshees
Thanks for the screenies, Wintersong And your thoughts. Still waiting to go home and try it.
wow I'm so DLing this tonight...
So mouthwatering and bonerinspiring... Damn... What are the chances of Impulse getting DoW 2 on release?
I like what I (finally) see in this game, but I must admit I find it laughable to recieve tutorial tips in the middle of a multiplayer slaughter... a tutorial needs to be a seperate part of the game (!).
I did not know you could set up a skirmish against A.I. ... have to try that so I can come to grips with the interface etc. . Thanks for the info.
Probably pretty much null
WarlokLord, you can switch off the tutorial tips in the options menu. And as for the AI, using retreat like the it sometimes does can be a useful tactic to get a unit across the map quickly. Anyway, good reviews so far. I've been playing some AI skirmish matches myself and thouroughly enjoying it.
Seeing as how I liked CoH better than DoW 1 (although DoW 1 was still amazing), I really cant wait for DoW2. Thanks for the preview guys. I hope the IG manage to make it in the game eventually, either as DLC or in an expansion. Until then, I plan to serve the Emperor using Space Marines.
Sounds more like the real Warhammer 40k now, and much less like StarCraft like DOW was.
Oh, I have a quick question for you guys. Upon watching some of the recent Relic Multiplayer videos over the DoW2 website, I noticed each team was one race only (Players on Team 1 were SM while the players on Team 2 were all Orks, etc). Are you be able to mix it up in terms of races that compromise a team (ex. Team 1= Orks and SM with Team 2=Eldar and Tyranid) or will each team have to pick a single race? Also, will there be the option for players to be the same race as you are (SM vs SM for example) or will opposing teams have to pick a different race than your team (similar to the Allies and Axis configuration in CoH)?
It doesnt really bother me either way. One race per team adds realism (until the Dark Angels and Space Wolves are on one team I suppose) while the ability to mix it up could provide very distinct gameplay strategies.
Each player is free to select his/her own race and hero so you can end up with some pretty eclectic permutations. On the plus side it makes you keep your wits about you and can simply be a lot of crazy fun...watching carnifexes and wraithlords pummel enemies together is a strangely amusing sight.
Each player can pick whatever race he wants.
As for the beta, I considered buying Soulstorm ($7.50 for a limited time off Steam) or pre-ordering DoW2 to get in now, but I've been reading the RelicNews forums and seeing a very mixed reaction to the game. I'd advise anyone still on the fence like me to just wait until the 28th when everyone can join the beta for free.
Thanks for the info guys. I guess Relic just has single race teams in their video previews/trailers to make things look realistic or something.
Yep, that's the best option for anyone interested or in the fence. The game is gold (it's a balance beta mostly... but they can use it to find bugs...) so you will play what you get at retail (day 1 patch was promised even before the beta started too).
Edit: well, at least you can play the multiplayer part... no single player (obviously) or Army Painter (sadly).
Because from the sound of all that, it sounds extremely restrictive. Is it only for beta, and will "DoW"2 get proper multiplayer support once the game goes live?
Umm guys... NDA, anyone? (Mostly just asking, I do not know whether the closed beta is under an NDA agreement as I'm not in it - didn't want SS, as DoW, WA and DC are definately enough, and SS is lame in comparison to them, imho.)
If there is one, you would wanna respect that.
The Steam part is just for the beta as far as i know (it was only mentioned as the means to get and play the beta, but who knows. It would be a very bad move...) . I don't know about the rest so no comment there.
Edit: about NDA... no one told me about one and Relic's forum (or Relicnews if you prefer) is quite public to check the beta part (i don't have account and i lurk there everyday).
Steam doesn't do any hosting or matchmaking and the beta will only be available through steam. Whether steam will be required for the retail version as DRM or something remains to be seen. (I haven't seen a direct answer to this yet.) Online games are played through microsofts GFWL service (free), which includes 1v1/3v3 auto match. and public/private game hosting. LAN is also included.
I should mention though that LAN/Private games are disabled for beta.
