I've been pondering getting one of those netbooks, but I'm wondering if I can do any gaming on one, like GalCiv2 or Civ 4 (or Elemental, when it's released.) So who has experience using a netbook, and how well do they do for some basic gaming?
I have an Asus N10. Plays most games great, a most games support 800x600 minimum resolution and 1024x600 widescreen. Sins of A Solar Empire, however, does not support that minimum resolution. Therefore, Sins is basically the only digital game that i CANNOT play at the moment.
I dont mean to be rude but it seems that not one person who has posted in this thread has done any proper research on the subject.
Asus N10

Specs:
Intel Atom 1.6Ghz
2gb RAM
Geforce 9300M GS
Well I think that's a case of Asus misnaming what is actually a rather nice small laptop in order to ride the coattails of the netbook fashion.
It is good to hear that the GeForce mobile cards are more capable than I had thought though.
LOL of course it is!...err..depends on ppl...im playing sins with EVERYTHING MAXED OUT...all at the highest settings in the video and effects with 4xAA...not even one is in high option..all is enabled to highest...reso is 1680x768 and i manage to get 55fps..minimum it dips down 2 30 when come to big battles but its playable..

NOT A NETBOOK
And, Nights..it has an Intel Atom Processor, and it has the limit of 10.4" screen. It's a netbook, no doubt about it.
Asus themselves claim that the N10 isn't a netbook but a laptop that happens to have a 10" screen and be of netbook size However, based on the specs its pretty damned close to normal netbook specs - except that graphics card and the fact its running Vista. It is a little big and heavy by netbook "standards" - but not by much. The price is at the top end too.
Nice machine and good to know it's running the games - I stand corrected.
Oh, and saying that ASUS are riding on the coattails of the netbook fashion is a bit much since they were one of (if not) the first with the Eee.
LOL im blind..my bad..i misread the NETbook part of the word..sorry
Thank you very much! I had been eyeing the N10 and was hoping that it played games well (I can deal with not playing Sins on the Netbook.) I think I'm going to wait a bit and see how the Ion shakes out, and for Windows 7.
Thanks everyone for the input!
I own a Toshiba NB100 (Intel Atom 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, XP Home Ed). So far, all applications and games I've tried installing to the netbook work great. I haven't tried GalCiv2 or SoaSE on it yet. I suspect those games will slow my system down too far to play with a large galaxy size or with any of the high end options selected.
It goes without saying that any of the new 3D games won't run properly on a netbook - but those games won't run on many desktops either.
To answer 7hyrael's question - Warcraft 2 BNE works perfectly on my netbook. I had to install Daemon Tools Lite as netbooks don't have optical drives included with them. Another old classic that actually works flawlessly in 1024x600 is Spaceward Ho! 4.0. I paid $399.00+tax (Canada) at FutureShop for my NB100. Hope this helps!
Has a minimum resolution of 1024x768, while the netbook standard resolution is 1024x600, so some elements won't display (notably at the game start menu). There's all kinds of complaints on the sins forums about it, but as I haven't been watching those discussions, I'm unaware of any kind of workaround.
With GC2, so long as you have RAM, you're okay-to a point. A large all abundant should be doable, but a huge or gigantic is probably out of the question. SoaSE is another animal entirely, but with minimal settings RAM again becomes (or rather, should become) the limit.
I just finished version 1.0 of my netbook 1024x600 resolution mod for Sins of a Solar Empire. Go here to download it and get more info:

Pretty cool. I've been eyeing an N10, and may have to pick one up sometime.
