Frequently Asked Questions
All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.
1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.
2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.
3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.
4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.
5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.
6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format? i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.
7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.
8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.
Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):
ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.
Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.
Some statistics...
Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...
400,000 Unique visits to the website12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website
That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.
Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!
They did help a little. Something in the GalDefSec file, which is the biggest (and most heavily modified) file in the whole mod. And what is goofing up is hard to pinpoint exactly.
No DS is not the biggest mod out there. Deadly Sins 7 is. But its too big to run right on Sins.
I'm not sure about that, they haven't had a public release since entrenchment no? Lots of new mods have been made since and many more expanded. Sins of the Fallen and Sins of a Galactic Empire need to be distributed in pieces because not all PCs can run them with everything enabled.
Honestly, someone is probably going to need to redo it from scratch. It's my favorite file in the game, but it is also the most finicky. No error message tells you this, but simply shuffling around the order of templates has fixed crashes in that file for me. I'm sure there are many other such weird rules that, either by intend or bugs, you need to follow.
Indeed, should have clarified that better.
Think that is what Nacey is doing.
I had some mini-dumps happening around TAR due to modifications with my GSD. I had to rebuild it from scratch backing out some of my custom changes.
We actually did a final Entrenchment release a while back and it was optimized enough to load and run with ship and structure detail set to Highest, so I honestly don't know what you're talking about.
We're planning on a modular Rebellion release like SoGE or SotF has done just to be extra sure, however.
Hey I am super curious about the custom map "AI Horde" Where its you against enemy Ai's. However, how the hell did you guys get it so that you the player. Always start at the same point every time! I cant for the life of me figure this out in galaxy forge.
Please and thanks ^^
It's more an issue with Winblow's 2GB RAM limit on Sins than anything else. Well, that and splitting up races tends to delay the inevitable late game lag, how exactly I do not know.
Forget where exactly this is in the GF, but open the .galaxy file itself and set randomizeStartingPositions to FALSE.
*hmrmrmrmr... beaten again.*
For reference: Galaxy Forge Beginner's Guide https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/174739/page/44
It may not have everything, but it covers most things.
The forge is nice for making custom maps, however, to really customize things, you have to open up the file and tinker.
Thanks alot guys
Now I just need to figure out why one of the players always dies at start of game. At least i am passed everyone dying "
Too many players, not enough home worlds perhaps?
Good point, but most dont ralize that a .galaxy or other modable text files can be opened with notepad.
Double click the map file and Windows will ask WTF? Choose select a program and select notepad, download notepad++ is highly recommended. Choose "Always open with this".

Oh my gosh, where does the new update put the update for the mod? I hope everything is going well. I wish only the best for this mod cause this is my favorite game and mod.
This is my favorite mod for this awesome game as well.
Ok, not sure if anyone else has reported this bug as there are 300+posts before me, but in singleplayer and multiplayer, if I fire a deliverance signal it will cause the game to minidump.
My friend and I were playing with the DS mod in, I as Advent Rebel (I've never really tried anything else) and him as TEC, against TEC and Vasari AI opponents. He asked me to fire at a planet to help him take it down, I complied, building the Engine and watching it so that I could fire it directly at the desired target, rather than it firing off on its own randomly.
As soon as it was completed, I lined it up and fired, he and I watched the signal right up till it hit the targeted planets gravity well, at which point we both had a minidump occur simultaneously.
In my own single player game, I got to the point where I could use the Engine, and built one. It fired, I found the signal before it hit, and when it hit the target it was aimed for, I minidumped.
I don't know if that is of any use to anyone, but I figured if it could be a DS related bug I should post it. If I could help out more, please tell me how.
Edit:
(The version of DS we are using is "Distant_Stars_(R)_ALPHA_0.11_[45923888]" & Rebellion v1.1.4480) <That may be very relevant, not sure if there's a newer version of either, currently.
I said 300+ posts (should have been 8000+ posts)
AI Horde map, is FUBAR. Ive not fixed it and pushed an update, simply b/c I could not get it to spawn you in the right spot.
Ive not tried it in Rebellion so, maybe that issue is fixable.
Currently most of the superweapons are crashy. So, you can go back a few pages and see how to disable them localy on your mod till push a update.
As always folks, the next update will be "soon-ish kinda maybe later but not forgotten about"
With a new patch incoming, I say we are looking to release the next patch around the same time as Dawn of Victory.
I'm sorry to hear that DS will be shutting down.
I also am saddened that carbon has said that DS is stopping.
it begins to look like sins the game series is dieing, BUT I can not really complain as I have had 5 years+ of sins.
harpo
Much knashing of teeth and weeping
It isn't dying, its just the people behind the first generation of mods have given up. The DS Team(?), Uzi, Swiss Knight, Evile Jedi, Major Stress (though he sometimes comes out of retirement) etc. have left, but those of us who got started with the expansions like Zombie, Lavo, and myself are still going strong, and while they're not really on these forums, there's quite a few Rebellion newcomers on moddb.
I've had the other superweapons firing all over the map with no problems, only the Deliverance Signal seems to be causing the dump for myself and my friend.
Unknown at this point.
@Iashar - yes, its a well known bug.
I didn't quit working on the mod, I just refuse to work on Rebellion. Any of the other three that has a major issue crop up, as long as I know about it, I look into it and fix it if it can be fixed.
Hey DS Team. Could you add this link to your head post? That way everyone can have it available should they need it. It's more or less a "no reply" type of thread and I don't think it will find itself in a sticky list.

Nice, will see if Nacey can post that up.
Nacey is to be putting up the latest update for 1.1 soon. Doesn't fix all the bugs but most are almost gone.
