Frequently Asked Questions
All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.
1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.
2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.
3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.
4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.
5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.
6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format? i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.
7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.
8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.
Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):
ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.
Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.
Some statistics...
Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...
400,000 Unique visits to the website12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website
That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.
Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!
Hey just downloaded the mod and I'm loving the massive scale maps and the textures are a lot nicer. The only problem I've found, don't know if you would consider this a "bug" per se: When I play single player and choose all the different colors for the different players, including myself, it does not keep your selections, though it does keep your insignia. I don't know if that is part of the mod? Regardless the color for my team always switches to light green and everyone else switches automatically to red.
skypalor, it sound similar to the base game team colour.
do you have the team colour option on? of yes then turn off the team colour
harpo
So, I'm playing on Steam and automatically get updates, so I need to ask. Does the 0.11 Alpha release for Rebellion work with Steam version?Currently on version 1.1.4480
The .4480 is superfluous.
After that, the .11 release sort of works. I get few problems but others do and there is still a bug or two that will give you trouble.
Fucking hell, keep crashing for me but my friends can play perfectly fine
ok mod pretty much works perfectly fine for me except two things first off and by far the most f*ckign annoying one is every now and then. in battle one of the songs get stuck on loop and i get to listen to it over and over again. sucks big time i like the sound track u guys made for this game i eventually just turned off the music all togetherseconds. game is crash, desync, and in general just hates me and my friends for online play.
I like the music, but I turn it off too, however if you'd like to get more out of it, get into your mods folder, DS mod, gameinfo folder and look for the player entity file for the faction you use. For example, in diplomacy if I were to go looking for the TEC player's file, I'd look for the file that says PlayerTech.entity Once you have your player file open, look for the music theme data section (red highlighted below), it'll look something like this:
musicThemeData musicThemeCount 7 musicTheme "MUSIC_TEC_THEME_1" musicTheme "MUSIC_TEC_QUIET_1" musicTheme "MUSIC_TEC_MISC_1" musicTheme "MUSIC_TEC_MISC_2" musicTheme "MUSIC_BATTLE_7" musicTheme "MUSIC_BATTLE_13" musicTheme "MUSIC_TROUBLE_4" scareThemeCount 2 musicTheme "MUSIC_BATTLE_7" musicTheme "MUSIC_BATTLE_13" announcementCount 1 musicTheme "MUSIC_TEC_ANNOUNCEMENT"
Now obviously there's only a few different songs listed. While leaving that file open, if you back out of the gameinfo folder and access the sound folder, you'll see a massive list of music in there. Small by Carbon's standards, but hey, there are size limits to file transfers and axing 99% of the songs Carbon wanted to include got you the current amount. Anyway, feel free to add more to the music theme count, as many as you feel like from that folder that you feel like would add to your playing experience, just make sure you change the number counts in the orange lines to account for all of the stuff you added in otherwise you'll cause more crashes then what you already get.
About the online play, DS isn't very online friendly. During the diplomacy days we had some real good games going but due to the way the game was designed, late game lag and desyncs always killed the fun. Unfortunately there's nothing that we can do about those. The crashes however, depending on the cause, can be made to go away, but that of course means figuring out what causes the issue and that unfortunately can be so damned difficult to figure out it just seems like there's nothing that can be done.
I don't know, I got some time off coming up here soon, I might update all of the trinity versions to their current versions of the game and get the changes passed along and if I have time, write some more lore, then maybe poke around the few rebellion files that have been pointed out as troublesome. Don't expect anything though because I might just be lazy and enjoy the day off that I finally get.
Would playing LAN solve the crash issues? If we played through Hamachi or Tunngle?
No, probably not. You'd have little or no desync issues avoiding ICO, but crashing is based on the files and game engine. So is the late game lag. Too bad Steam doesn't let you sit on a certain version of the game. I'm told Rebellion 1.04 was much more stable then 1.1, and DS Rebellion 0.11 was built around that release so there aren't any issues aside from the usual stuff.
Aargh, I'm just so frustrated and wondering why the hell I keep crashing why the game runs fine for my mates Bah!
That is something we are trying to figure out.
Do they have better systems then you? Are they using lower graphics settings? Do they have less stuff running in the background? Are they using a different OS? Basically I'm wondering if your system is bogged down while theirs aren't. Also something to consider, my PC hard drive has a RAID monitor running which can sometimes slow things down a bit, also has backup software that constantly runs which not only slows drive speed, but also chews up a little bit of network activity. I have an older router so I have to set my gaming PC up as the DMZ host to ensure better connections... Every little bit you can do to improve your experience is something you should do.
If you can play single player relatively fine, then it's got to be something network related. If you can't play single player at all, try reducing your graphics and trimming your empire tree by unpinning as much as possible, maybe even redownload the mod again until it works better.
The only thing I can do in that case is lower the graphics and run absolutely nothing in the background.
And I'm pretty sure I have the "stronger" system out of the lot.
Well, a quad core with 20 gigs of ram, 3 terabytes of hard drive, and two of the best graphics card out there hooked up in a SLI configuration would indeed be the superior system, however this is sins and as we all know in sins, older is better. A single core with massive processing power is better then a quad core with less speed. 4 gigs, 20, 100 gigs of ram means nothing because sins uses up to 2 and crashes. A couple of years ago it was discovered that playing sins on a SLI setup actually hindered performance rather then helped it for reasons I'm not entirely sure were ever figured out.
In any case, give the reduced graphics and no background programs a try, also keep redownloading the mod if it keeps crashing. Ryat had to download it some couple dozen or so times (no joke, was at least somewhere in the teens) before he actually got a working copy that didn't crash out of multiplayer.
Alternately, the alpha 0.10 release was released for rebellion 1.01, and the Alpha 0.11 release was made with compatibility for Rebellion 1.04 and 1.041 in mind , if you have the ability to fresh install rebellion and only update it to that 1.041 point, do it. It generally works better with the version it was created for.
Where are you downloading from? Maybe you're just prone to getting CRC errors from that location without the archiver being able to pick it up?
Try using DTA (DownThemAll), a firefox plugin, or Jdownloader to grab the files if you are concerned about corruption. Else, I'd find a more reliable host. I haven't had direct downloads do that kind of thing for over a decade.
Its Nacey's home server.
Have you run md5 checks from his source files and your "broken" downloads before?
*waits for an update of Ryats great powerful pirates mini-mod*
I've had the same 3 threads in my recent replies list for three weeks. You guys are still alive, right?
-Huzzah!
Yes
But only just barely.
Well....Two survivors at least.
Zombie jesus day didn't kill me, but the other people on the road almost did. How come people are such shitty drivers? Seriously, wtf... Just stay in your own god damned lane. It's not hard...
Update Coming. Have been in contact with Nacey and he says almost has all issues corrected and finished. He had to take apart some of the code down to the line but hopefully it will be coming soon.
Great... Next you're gonna be telling me that powerful pirates and flagships are redone and ready for public consumption...
