These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!
Screenshots:We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.
Lore:We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.
Maps:Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Frequently Asked Questions
All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.
1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.
2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.
3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.
4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.
5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.
6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format? i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.
7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.
8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.
Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):
ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.
Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.
Some statistics...
Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...
400,000 Unique visits to the website12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website
That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.
Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!
I suspect things will get back to normal soon. We had x-mas, then New Year, then national recover-from-hangovers week......the DS team will trickle back in soon. (Wishful thinking shall be rewarded. )
I shan't complain about the lack of progress since I am not patient enough to tolerate random game crashes in the name of furthering development, and thus am not contributing in the slightest. :'( Although the time-lag makes me want to learn to mod...I say that a lot, but never do.....
-Huzzah!
Yeah, totally know how to do that. However, I absolutely refuse to play this game without Distant Stars on >.> Nope, will not do it. I'd rather go without until it's working again lol.
The game really becomes 100% more awesome with DS. It adds so much I feel like I might as well just be going go back to vanilla without it.
Seems like most moddable games are actually better with community-made mods
That's more due to preferences then poor game design. Most if not all developers make games and try to appeal to a broader audience. Modders change the game to what they want. For every one DS fan there are one or two that are meh about it or hate it. Be we all enjoy Sins. Just with different mods making the game a little closer to what we like.
I am trying to download the 0.11 version of DS for Rebellion but after I finish downloading it I can't even extract the files from the 7zip/Winrar file. All I did was click the download link above, wait for the download to complete and then attempt to extract the files to Mods-Rebellion v1.01. Is there another link that does not have a corrupted winrar file? Oh, by the way you guys have done an excellent job, I am very eager to try out your new version for Rebellion.... so somebody please help me!!!
It occasionally requires a fresh download. I wouldn't blame the file until the second or third one fails to extract.
I already downloaded it like 5 times already and when I extract the files to an empty folder (Winrar & 7zip) it gives me extraction errors and fails to extract. Is there another alternative link where we can download the file because I am addicted to DS and really can't enjoy SOASE without it. If not do you think someone can post an alternate link? I have been scouring the internet for a few days looking for an alternative but only Entrenchment/Diplomacy/Trinity are working (I also have the older versions of SOASE) and I am looking for Rebellion Distant Stars. Sorry to be a pain because it looks like it is working for everyone else but any assistance would be greatly appreciated
Check to see if you have the latest 7zip. Sometimes that can cause issues.
I have the same problem, and I know how to fix the "unable to get into game bit," I'm just bummed I can't play DS at all. If it breaks a certain feature to do a hotfix for 1.1, do it. I can live without one feature, so long as I get my DS.
I suggested this to Nacey. Hopefully this will quicken the release of the next update. Also remember that RL plays a big role in this as well and we are sorry for the inconvenience.
It's not like we're gonna eat your souls or anything if we don't get the full version soon.
Guys got a question. It's really anoying that the game crashes each time the Advent superweapon hits a planet...so I looked for No superweapons mods, but they didn't seem to work with DS. So how can I deactivate the superweapons myself?
For people not able to get into the game, are you trying more than once?I frequently have minidumps when it tries to load, but it always works if I try a second time right away. I also stopped having dumps in-game when I stopped using GameBooster, for what it's worth.
I think you can just remove them from the research list or something like that. But thanks all for the info, I passed it up to Nacey for fixin.
Hi, it's a great mod btw!
removed from research list:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/68154553/gameinfo.rar
just backup the files and overwrite them in the gameinfo directory of the mod. (it's for rebellion)
Thank you!!
Still waiting for that update... lol. Any progress reports other than the trademark Soon™ response?
Sadly no.
Just be patient.
Or bug the shit out of stardock to release a non steam version and I'll bang out all of the updates you want within days.
According to Stardock 90 % of all sales were on Steam ... so I would not get up any hopes.
That's because it's a steamworks game so no matter where you buy it you have to get it from steam and for a time you could only buy it from steam or here, and boxes were not sold in retail stores, thus the numbers are not only skewed in favor of that, but most people would just say screw it if I have to have that installed I may as well get it from there instead of here.
Basically, if I were to look up voter registrations in Sweden and then make a grandiose statement that greater then 95% of the voters were white... You'd look at me and say, "Yeah, no shit, it's Sweden." Same principle here.
And I'm not getting my hopes up, not even for a sins 2 that doesn't require steam, when I and a few other community members voiced our legitimate complaints and were basically told to go fuck ourselves shortly before the beta was opened up, I stopped waiting for it, hence my lack of interest in being the ever present community member and modder that I once was.
So.... How are those achievements, auto matching, and tournament ladder matches that were supposed to happen as a result of integrating steam?
So true...
For me this could be a turning point. If you haven't been following, THQ, a publisher for many a great game and franchise has been broken up and sold off to other video game companies.
But the more interesting thing about the situation is that the founding members of IronClad came from another video game company called Barking Dog Studios which created a little known game called Homeworld, the progenitor of Sins of a Solar Empire.
Homeworld, which THQ owns because of absorbing other companies over the years, will be sold in the back catalog in the coming weeks. If Ironclad and/or Stardock can get the rights back, Sins 2 could be the most bad-ass game in space based RTS of all time...
Which means I would break down and get even if it's on Steam...
This is a cruiser in Homeworld. Doesn't it look like the TEC repair cruiser in Sins...?
That's a unit from a mod, not from Relic.
Thanx for clearing that up. I was really thinking how they got by without some type of infringement thrown at them...
