Frequently Asked Questions
All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.
1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.
2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.
3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.
4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.
5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.
6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format? i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.
7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.
8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.
Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):
ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.
Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Ditto.
It was to be his last tour before he could finally go home to where he can tend to his home in peace, but alas he has been posted to the starbase Tokyo orbiting the human world of Murino a metropolis world mostly used for trade and stock exchange but he calls it home.
'Hey, Oi!'
The voice snaps Kei back into reality. He glances at the source of the voice, gunnery sergeant Mayuko who too was posted on the starbase on short notice. The reason was unknown however as to why twenty individuals were called to duty and also posted on the station Tokyo.
'What is it May?' He turns back to his monitor, glancing through data and radar blips. Picking up his cup of coffee taking a sip then setting it down where it makes a evident ring on the surface of his workplace.
'Aren't you supposed to be on your last tour, you know. To go home to your wife Sayuko?' She asked, adjusting her headset as she leans back in her chair.
'Yeah, only a couple more days before I can go b-' before he could finish his sentence, the phase radar begins showing multiple blips as there are incoming unregistered ships. Sitting up and turning the alarm on he attempts to open a communications node to the arriving fleet. No response. Kei turns to Mayuko.
'Activate all weapons, be on the ready in case if this goes south.' Mayuko nods, flipping a bunch of switches at her console.
The communications uplinks finally establishes, which makes his blood turn to ice on who he sees.
'Vasari, aren't we supposed to be allied with your kind?' he sneers as he adjusts his mic for better volume.
The alien lifeform makes an audible repetitive sound. This bastard is laughing. Kei thought to himself.
'Our agreement has come.. to an end and we have realized that humans are a plague in this universe, thinking they are all so high and mighty. We will obliterate you.' The communication uplink is abruptly cut short.
'KEI! They are already here!' Mayuko is pointing out the window. Kei leans over from his seat and sees a massive Vasari fleet firing their weapons. their lasers and wave weaponry dispersing before the shields.
'See that, this is shield t-' A shudder makes Kei fall from his chair. Phase missiles were known to go through shields and directly into the armor of ships and structures. Cursing he pulls Mayuko up from the floor, looking at her he hands her a pass card.
'This will get you to the council of the world Murino, get everyone else into the shuttle and go NOW.' Kei begins pushing her to the door but she digs her feet in.
'What about you don't you have a wife to be coming home to?!' she cried.
Smiling Kei looks outside the window, letting go of Mayuko.
'My wife was killing by Vasari two months ago, when we were on the paradise world of Murdoch. I have nothing left Mayuko, nothing left but a empty home. My wife... To never again to see her smile or hear her laugh or even hold her close to me to say. 'I love you' This pain is too much for me to bear alone, you must go and warn the others. WARN them so we can prepare a fighting force to rival these bastards.'
She nods with tears in her eyes, she runs out of the room. Shortly after Kei sees multiple shuttles making their way to Murino. He walks over to the central console, disengaging the safety protocol he looks at the massive button labelled self-destruct which would taken him, this station and that fleet with him.
'Goddosupīdo'
Godspeed. He pushes the button, as the light consumes him his last thoughts are.
Honey, i'm coming home.
Okay then.
That was either meant for the lore section, or was a subtle hint to write more lore...
-Huzzah!
I just tried v1.01 for dip 1.34 and had some random crashes at starting the game (not when playing). It is seams my game does not like planets with more than 6 metal & crystal asteroids. I reduced all planets asteroid "maxCount" higher to 6 and had no issues since.
Might be worth for you to check.
Edit: Just after writing this message I had another random crash, so you might ignore my message
Diplomacy recently updated to 1.37. This may or may not be the issue. Also there are still some oddities that will cause the occasional crash that we are trying to track down.
This may or may not be an issue for you Quiet_Man, but I found the number of start-up and during-game crashes to be significantly less frequent when I STOPPED using Game Booster with Sins. I found that... odd. Happened by accident, but I've stuck with it. Many less MiniDumps.EDIT: This has proven true with Diplomacy and Rebellion, BTW.
Can someone point me out the file[s] responsible for the bright blue background everytime I zoom into a planet system? It strain my eyes switching between dark galaxy view to a sudden bright planet view.
Great mod, many thanks.
Edit: Didn't want to make another post, thanks 'Ryat' finally able to get rid it.
You can use the sky box option to change it. Just flip it on and off to change that background.
Used this mod religiously since it was first released. After playing Diplomacy for a while, I stopped playing Sins for quite a while. Recently picked Rebellion up on Steam (X-mas sale I think) and decided to check back here.
Game works perfectly fine for about...5 minutes or so. Then it starts to freeze for a few seconds, play, freeze a bit longer, play, blah blah until it finally permanently locks up. Sometimes it gives me a mini dump, sometimes I have to restart my comp completely. I know it's still in Alpha, but good lord that's annoying lol. Don't have any other mods installed, as this one does everything I could ever want for this game. Just wish I could actually play it lol.
Anyway, I'll be watching this thread constantly for updates. You guys do a bang-up job with this mod, it's simply amazing. Keep up the awesome work!
I can't particularly tell, but it appears to me based on the fact the mod hasn't been updated that it's incompatible with Rebellion 1.1. If so, can we expect an update, or has this mod basically fallen?
Blasphemy! I think everyone has just been busy around the holiday. Humans tend to celebrate a few things this time of year. Inconvenient, yes, but they can be forgiven a few of their shortcomings.
It does work with Rebellion 1.1. Not well but it does work, an optimized update is coming soon.
It works pretty well for me, but I can see a definite need for rebalancing and are some of the new techs still not working right with the mod or did that fixed in the last update? The TEC Loyalist research all seems to work and that's all I've tested.I wish I knew how to mod Sins, I'd offer to help. I know I could learn, but I think I should stick to modding just one family of games (Total War) lest I lose what social life I have completely.
You have a social life? I've heard of that, what's it like?
What doesn't work particularly well? Obviously balance will be wonky, but other than that, is it at least stable?
About as stable as California (land wise that is). Runs good for a while then goes crazy from time to time. We think we have it narrowed down but unfortunately it may mean losing one of our features. Or at least temporarily until we can figure out why and how to stop it.
This is a great mod. Thank you to all of you for creating it. I'm running Distant Stars version 1.01 release (Dip 1.34 compatible) with Trinity (dip 1.37), so far no stability issues. However, no matter how I try I cannot convert the mod's bin GameInfo to txt. I'd like to continue doing minor tinkering with the game play and I'm aware you don't support txt files, but please could you make the GameInfo for this version available in txt?
Edit: No need, finaly worked out how to do the conversions successfully. Thank you
So how long is a while? Should I just keep the quicksave button handy like I'm playing a typical Bethesda RPG?
Well damn...I can't even get into the game now lol. As soon as the first Loading screen appears, it minidumps.
Endersblade. To turn off a mod so that you can load your game go to your mod folder (User/appdata/local/ironclad games/sins of a solar empire/Mods_....) Open the appropriate mod folder to the mod you enabled that caused the crash the edit the file enablemod.txt. The following works for me
TXT
