Multiplayer Games:We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

Maps:Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please include as much information as possible, if you have an error log feel free to post it on these forums and we'll take it from there. If you can reproduce the error please include the error log (read below to find out how to enable error logs) and include as much detail on how to reproduce the problem.

Open the user.setting file (using Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor) and scroll down to the bottom 7 lines from the bottom is the line:LogOutput FALSEChange FALSE to TRUELogOutput TRUE
and from then on any Log files will be saved to the debug folder:Windows Vista/Windows 7: C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug or Windows XP: C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug
If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.
Frequently Asked Questions
All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.
1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.
2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.
3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.
4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.
5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.
6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format? i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.
7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.
8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.
Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):
ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.
Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

About to buy Rebellion, but i just cannot seem to do so until DS is out. Really appreciate all your work guys. Amazing mod. Infact it is absolutely lovely.

Bailknight will be included I guess, but will there be new effects for the new rebellion weapons?
Sort of. We may not be able to adapt that mod into Rebellion as Rebellion changed a number of effects. There is another mod of effects that is currently being adapted for Rebellion that we are considering.
Hello guys. I know a lot of the parts of this mod are probably very challenging to port over, but what about just the planets and tech improvements? Those additions are what really made diplomacy fun for me. I can live without the rest of the stuff, but I can't really find Rebellion as fun as diplomacy until I can see my starbase hovering over an Urban planet.
How hard is it to change the format of your mod to .txt? Do I have to use a tool to change it to avoid problems?
Also, is it all right if I redistribute a changed version of your mod to a few friends once you come out with rebellion? It will not be distributed to the public, just between my friends.
No issues there. A lot of our uses do this all the time. Its the public side we care about.
Use the Converter tahat comes with the game and harpo99999's tools.
Everything in the game was changed in some way. Its not hard, just tedious.

HelloI have some ideas for DS. I only don't know if it is possible to create all that stuff in game.1. 4 different labs instead of 2 (f.e. Advent would have one for Hostility, one for Security, one for Harmony and one for Understanding.2. My vision of the moon is there are near a planet and the gravity well has shape of number 8. 3. In my opinion stars are useless. We could change this by creating some ships similar to Razloz constructor which could go to suns's gravity well, construct small mining station. We could extract new resource (Helium f.e.) or upgrade station to medium or large. Large station could have aditional abilities like starbases, could explore star (3 new star-connected Artifacts). New resource could be used for some powerful technologies boosting planets or ships. What do you think about this?

Can't be done, hard coded in the game for two lab types.
The only way to even get close to this is to use the galaxy forge and put moons near planets. The shape of the gravity well is hard coded so no figure 8 look.
Resources are hard coded, we can change the name and look of a resource, but not add more. Artifacts are hard coded, we can only change the names and effects of what are there and the only thing related to stars available for use is the ability to travel between and speed of travel.
I think they'd be great to do, unfortunately, we can't do it.
Side Note: Port of DS (Diplo) sent off to testers for Rebellion testing.

B-t-dubs, AI Horde map is gone. It never quite worked as planned....I'll think of some other way to screw you against the AI.
One of these days I'm gonna have to send you my old maps to see what you think can be done with them. Probably going to have to go through and update them for ya to work with the new forge but I've got the update process down to a science now.
Edit- b-t-dubs, is the trigger system useable? Depending on what's available to use, some boring maps could be turned into total AI domination.
Harpo's got a map updater. But Im taking this time to tweak/remake/edit any maps Ive made. So Im just gonna redo the ones that are popular so I can have good maps that work and not have a repeat of AI Horde.
But send me what you got, I be happy to look at them.
And no, trigger system isnt working...yet hopefully. Otherwise someone might hate me for a proper AI Horde map.

Sorry there hasn't been any news from me recently however I'm sure you'll all be glad to see that there is finally a minor update to the Diplomacy edition for Distant Stars. This incorporates the efficiency mini mod from Stant, basically all of the minor changes I'd started but not finished working on and should've released with 1.00 originally.

On to the subject of Rebellion, I know you're all really looking forward to having Distant Stars working with Rebellion and whilst I have most of it working there are a few more minor issues for me to iron out in our release before you'll all want to start playing it. So Distant Stars for Rebellion is coming along nicely. It now at least runs without too many errors, few conflicts here and there to sort out but its definitely a step in the right direction!
Now you all thought leaving Ryat in charge of the Pirates was bad with his Powerful Pirates minimod, now just imagine Powerful Pirates with this fleet, this was the first raid launched against the AI...
I may have accidentally changed the amount of fleet supply the pirates have!
