Frequently Asked Questions
All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.
1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.
2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.
3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.
4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.
5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.
6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format? i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.
7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.
8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.
Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):
ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.
Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Well, I guess my question was more like, given the way it's described, are those all mini-mods or is there a unifying whole. I guess the BSG core components fill in that role. Nice work.
Even still, DS has a good number and I don't care what people say about the difficulty in making sure they stack right and all, I think having those options is great. I really just play with lasers and flagship on top of DS Efficiency (as I call it), but I am looking to start having fun with someone else's graphics package, whether I tear it up for myself or not.
The unifying piece is the SotF Core. If you want a BSG only mod you'd activate the Colonials, Cylon and Core. If you wanted to take the Colonials up against the Plague you'd activate the Colonials, Plague and Core. And so on and so forth. The mod you play is based on the pieces of the mod that are activated in addition to the stock components that aren't overridden.
Definitely agree here. It's nice to be able to change things or try out new ideas within the constraints of the mod/game you already enjoy.
Okay, for some reason it wasn't clicking with me that you did SotF. I get it now. It's definitely a unique design in that the nucleus alone serves all the mini-mods more than it stands on its own. Great for adding/subtracting races without fighting with the memory limits. Personally I would like to play with the Homeworld version of that, but I cry in knowing that the mechanics are not compatible.I've said elsewhere that such a beast would have to be structured like the Total War series, seeing that micro-managing multiple battle in HW fashion would be too difficult for most to do simultaneously.
Minimods...
How do I hate thee? Let me count the stacking ways.I hate thee to the depth and breadth and heightMy monitor can display, when feeling out of sightFor the ends of files all need a space.I hate thee to the level of everyday'sMost headache giving need, by sun and screen-light.I hate thee freely, as men strive to debug Right;I hate thee purely, as the Karma counts Raise.I hate thee with a passion put to useIn my old files, and with Harpo's Tools I have faith.I hate thee with a hate I never seemed to loseWith my lost versions, --- I hate thee with the breath,Swears, beers, of all my life! --- and, if the Players choose,I shall still hate thee more after the core mod's death.
BTW, since there was only 1 download, I went ahead and updated the last link again early this morning because I had finished going over the minimods and reduced their load up errors to 0. There's still a couple in game ones I need to track down, but whatever. In due time.
*gives Stant a new Steeler's jersey, a 12 pack, and a (looks like)gold watch* thank you for your ongoing years of service and dedication.
Nice. Thanks buddy. I shall wear it with pride come August, and drink the beer while watching two dudes beat the crap out of each other in the octagon tonight.
*stretches the watch to let it contract over and over*...ah....wish i wasn't so listless today........disappointed myself with expectations of another girl >.> listening to her talk got grading and so left <.< yammering on about facebook, what her friends did, all her new crap from Christmas...failed to speak anything about herself......surely my expectations aren't high..all I require is a personality and self awareness....the rest are just perks >.> didn't even feel like putting forth the effort to get laid tonight -.- worried I'm gonna end up with cats.....
You might be surprised how high those standards really are.
Don't worry about the cats. Besides, everyone I know who races to the altar comes off as a whack job anyway.
stant, it is a bit disappointing that I was the only download of the addon update, so I am re-downloading again
badtune, do NOT worry about living with cats, they give what they receive ie you treat them gently they will be gentle with you, and generally they are intelligent, just without a common language to humans.
harpo
In all fairness, it was only up for about 11 hours before I deleted it and uploaded a new version. One download on a Friday night in the States is pretty good in my opinion. I've had 3 in the last 24 hours. I'm not worried. I think I've had around 100 overall if I count all of the older versions I've gotten rid of.
Yep
So, so gutted about computer problems. Wondering if you guys might know a little about this.
Basically, recently my computer has had issues with certain games. Basically, anything current-gen that I've played recently (eg SOASE, Metro 2033, Killing Floor, but strangely not SupCom) has after a short while cut out to a black screen and the sound has hung. The monitor just goes completely, loses signal, so I have to reboot. I figure that this is the graphics card playing up, which is a completely new phenomenon for me, and I reckon it may be a heat issue, seeing as it only happens to more demanding programmes.
I'm thinking I might have dust inside the computer. Is this a valid conclusion? If so, what could I do to rectify the issue without taking the whole thing apart? Maybe go at it with a can of compressed air?
Maybe she just doesn't like opening up straight away? Do you mean you're looking for somebody daring to be different, rather than putting up a facade even if they are interesting?
Could be dust/heat, could also be a bad driver or setting that's being triggered and signalling for sleep mode which naturally hangs after the monitor shuts off because only part of the computer is functioning.
Or your video card could be going bad. But yes, dust out the computer with compressed air (short controlled burst IIRC) and see if that helps. If not, work up to the next cheapest thing until it is fixed.
An SoaSE Trinity update on Steam broke compatibility with DS :-/
EDIT: Got it working again. After the steam update, I removed DS completely and installed it again. Seems that the steam update messed with something.
Steam ruins everything.
I wish Battle 16.ogg would play more often, I love it. It doesn't seem to play much at all, sometimes never after an entire session. Where is it from anyway?
deleted
It's an E.S. Posthumus track called Tikal. It's on their first album Unearthed.
To get it to play more, you could always open up the game.musicdata file in the GameInfo folder, it's already in text format, and scroll down to the list of battle music and remove the one's that you're not too much of a fan of. You'll have to change the count at the top by the number of lines you delete and don't leave any spaces or the game will think that's the end of the file and not read anything else in the list. An alternative is, copy the file to your desktop and rename it as one of the files in that same list that you don't care much for and copy and paste it back into the sound folder. Don't like multiple songs, just rename it and copy it back in multiple times, and for sure it should play more often as you have multiple copies of it in the list.
This is probably one of those that plucks at my ear when I hear it, but I never bother to unpack the file and really explore it. One day I might start converting .ogg files like crazy.
Why bother? Plenty of media players can play .ogg natively. Don't tell me you're still using media player.
Nope, I use winamp. Just don't have any .ogg files amongst my music collection, so didn't figure it would play offhand. I know that a lot of games like to compress music into things like .big format. Figured this might be the same.
It has about the same chance to play as any of the other battle songs. Given a battle in Sins could be a scout getting attacked by milita, so it could be playing on any grav well your not watching.
There are the other battle tracks that are not 100% battle only. AKA, the Upbeat, Sad, etc etc etc.
Hey DS Team,
Just wanted to say congrats on the recent release. I haven't been on these forums in a while, and wanted to stop in and say hi, and congrats.
I am also going the modular "core" route for 7DS eventually, giving players the ability to pick and choose what they want. That way, we can put more in, and not overload the engine.
Figuring it all out though...that is tricky.
Nice work everyone.
