Frequently Asked Questions
All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.
1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.
2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.
3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.
4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.
5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.
6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format? i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.
7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.
8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.
Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):
ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.
Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.
Some statistics...
Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...
400,000 Unique visits to the website12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website
That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.
Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!
Thanks for the string/Window mini-update!
I'll see about doing ones for the other Fallen/Maelstrom if those guys haven't gotten to it yet.
And what do I see when I scroll a few posts above my last one?
I see discussions about a problem with version 1.53 (not 1.053 which entrenchment has), then something about the new logo picture, a problem with entrenchment the poster figured out by himself and more about the pic.
Maybe you should follow your own advice before you bite someone else's head off next time, because I did read every post between my last issue with the asteroids being resolved and this new problem, I just didn't think of the poster missing out on the 0, probably due to it being quite late at the time I posted.
On a more positive note: The fix wiorked fine for me. Thanks.Since I didn't have that file in the window folder before, I didn't copy over the SteamMainMenuScreen.window file for now. Should I use that file too?
If you don't use steam then you don't need it. It is exactly the same thing as the regular MainMenuScreen.window file with the exception of there not being an update button since steam automatically updates the game for you.
Ok weird issue. Sins Trinity - Diplomacy at 1.34 - have distant stars and sins of the fallen working fine on 1.32 but come 1.34 it seems i can only have one of them enabled at a time - i have the SOTF Distant stars mod on as well but when enabling distant stars it seems to overwrite SOTF. All mods are latest release too (as far as i know at time of writing)
My Mod list is as follows.
Distant Stars B5
Fallen Distant Stars (D) R3
Sins of the fallen (D) R4
Sins of the fallen (E) R4
Have no idea what changed as reading up there were no big changes. So my question is what on earth did i break?
(Love both these mods btw)
Hey, extraction bug here. I downloaded the mod, but when I clicked 'Extract to the specified folder,' it gave me an error. Something about the archive being damaged, or unable to open...
Any help would be appreciated. I'd like to try the mod.
@thecaitiffchoir: You don't just enable the mod, but you also have to click on Apply Changes. Whatever you want to have priority has to be at the top of the list. I have a feeling Sins of the Fallen (E) R4 is for Entrenchment, so you might as well nix that from the list.
When Distant Stars alone is enabled, there should be a music change.
@JA: Sounds like a bad download. Try redownloading it and place it on your desktop. Extract there and move it manually to desired location to produce optimal results.
Sins of the Fallen is up to release 5.3 if I'm remembering what I read last. So your copies are actually very out of date. It's also not fully compatible with the 1.34 release of Diplomacy, though as in the case of DS, it should only be the front menu affected. To get the updated files for DS for diplomacy, see the last post of the previous page where I linked to fixes for it. Also with DS being the top mod, it will be the only one to work since it makes absolutely no references to anything in SotF. Perhaps you should head on over to the SotF thread and get some input from Zomb on the order that things should be stacked in to get it to work.
It's known and it's not a bug, just a newer compression format.
Update your version of 7z to the latest and everything will extract just fine.
Well, I was trumped there. Hey, pictures to color!
Been playing DS with 1.34 and all seems good, except that there is no "quit" button on the home screen (so I have to windows key out to end the program).
(I havent upgraded DS beyond 1.32 IIRC)
Ok, I got 7-Zip. It gave me another error. Here's what I got;
'Can not open file
C:\Users*******\Desktop\Distant_Stars_(D)_0.99_B5_[73603744].7z' as archive'
What does that mean?
Also, I suck with computers in terms of technical stuff. Beware of noob responses.
Wait, which version of 7z is the latest? Here is where I am:

@ JA: Have you tried re-downloading the mod? Sometimes bad downloads can happen.
@ -Norbert-: I never raised my voice via capital letters or exclamation points, I didn't call you any names, in fact I even referenced the post a few above yours and put in bold letters 'entrenchment' just for you. Since it was in the same sentence I assumed the connection would be obvious. Live, learn, and get some more sleep. We've all been there, take it in stride.
On a more positive note ... I'm glad you got your problem solved.
I'm trying that now.
ouch moddb seems to be outa date for SOTF - thanks for pointing that out - i shall dl 5.3 and see if i can get things working.
Hi thecaitiffchoir,
Neither Sins of the Fallen R4 or R5 are compatible with Distant Stars currently. I'm sorry to say I've moved past R4 so it will likely not be updated to support Distant Stars.
I am looking at how to get my new R5 structure to be compatible with Distant Stars and by extension support all my races, planets and addons (not already incorporated into DS) with Distant Stars. I have no timeline for this and apologize for the lack of progress.
Thanks again to the Distant Stars team for granting permission to do this.
ah thats why - thats cool - i will look forward to it in the future - keep up the good work zomb
If you have Diplomacy, download that and put the files in their proper places overwriting what's there and you should be good. If you notice anything else, post it and I'll get to it. Posting it again because I can, this one is for Entrenchment 1.053:http://sites.google.com/site/steelers086/gamefiles/DS_E1.053compatible.rar
Well, the extraction issue is taken care of. Now just gotta try this puppy out. Thanks.
Stant123 was already so nice to post a fix for that a page earlier. Here you got a direct link to the post: https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/335474/page/255/#3027021
Thanks Stant and Norbert!
Not a problem JA. Let us know if there are any other issues. Glad we could help!
The Carbon Hotline is now open.
Hi, Just thought I'd drop by and say thanks for the mod. I love game enhancement mods and this one is definitely up there with my top 5. Only run through one game so far (lost to a bloody diplo victory I'll remember to keep it off next time) so probably not seen all that the mod has to offer yet, but so far I'm enjoying it very much.
I also appreciate the level of support you provide, and I hope it continues for the foreseeable future. Once again, thanks very much..... right I'm off to hunt down what remains remains of the Advent
Burn those witches.
It will, Nacey has made the commitment to carry this mod over into Rebellion, and I've already stated my intent to get a working version up and running with the beta if it's at all possible to speed the whole process along. Secretly, I just want DS to be the first mod of this kind and size to available for Rebellion. The longer all them otha suckas gotta take to catch up, the happier I'll be.
