Frequently Asked Questions
All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.
1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.
2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.
3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.
4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.
5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.
6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format? i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.
7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.
8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.
Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):
ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.
Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.
Some statistics...
Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...
400,000 Unique visits to the website12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website
That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.
Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!
Much appreciated.
Hi there,
I have downloaded the .99 version of your mod. But when I attempted to unzip it I get errors. Both 7zip and Winrar can not recongnize the compression type, they say, thus they cannot work with the product.
Is there anything in particular with this version?
This version was compressed with LZMA2 you'll probably need to update an out of date version of 7zip or WinRAR to be able to access it. I'll resort to using LZMA in future as out of date tools can't access the new compression method.
They are out of date, but that just means I should update it myself!
After updating 7zip it is unpacking fine now it seems.
Where can I get this ringtone...and why dont I have it already.
And why do you have it? Do I call you in my sleep?
Nah, you butt dialed him a few times and he loved it so much because he caught you singing along to Britney Spears, he kept it as blackmail material for later.
I'm getting multiple mini dumps with beta 5..especially when starting up the game or loading a save.
http://www.mediafire.com/file/zfz7ebokw21evo8/entity.manifest
This may help issues.
Aye, we know. Its the dump we been trying to locate for a week or 2. We may have fixed it, we are testing it further.
If our awesome teamwork did find it. Be farwarned something wont be in 1.0. You may or may not miss it.
Honestly, if missing it means no minidumps, then I'll suck it up and miss it.
Its still a work in progress.
Is there any way i can just have the planets, I like all the rest of the stuff too, but when i play against a friend of mine online it really bogs us down. we would really like to just have the new planet types and the research for them. thank you
If you had bothered to read at the top under the built in mini mods section there are these:
Sins Plus by Uzii:This mod adds 11 new Planets and 66 new Planetary Bonuses, as well as Ship Graveyards. Custom research is also included for some of the new planets, and there is now the option to colonise Gas Giants, once you have acquired the technology.
Celestial Bodies by TohKlidan:New Planets, Nebulae, Bonuses, and variants designed & created by TohKlidan.
You can have just the planets if you get those mods.
ok, yes i bothered to read about the built in mini mods. Small problem, the developers of the distant stars mod updated them to work for diplomacy 1.32. Neither of the two mods you mentioned have been updated in a long time. Celestial bodies was never meant for diplomacy from what i read and Sins Plus is not supported anymore. Do you have any OTHER suggestions?
Download those mods and update them yourself, there are a few community tools you can use.
Or you can try to rip them out of DS.
Just an update on the problem i was having with system icons in B4: it got worse in B5 but i found a workaroud....
In B5, when i zoom out the galaxy, all the system icons except the unexplored ones get garbled, and now i get some icons where there are no system present, making the zoomed out map completely unreadable.
However i discovered this only happens when i use 1366x768 resolution: if i set the game to 1024x768 the icons appear normal, even if my screen native resolution is 1366x768...
It only happens with DS, stock trinity and other mods function normally in 1366x768... guess i will have to play DS on 1024x768 for the time being...
It may not like that resolution.
Not sure about Celestial bodies, but I know Rick had been updating Sins Plus http://ricksgalaxy.homestead.com/links.html
Not had any mini-dumps since I did the following:
Deleted mod/entries to load mod, ran game, downloaded fresh B5 full, unpacked and placed in folder, downloaded and replaced entity.manifest
Though I did see a "string not found" on the 2nd jump inhibitor icon title for TEC (untested vasari/advent). I think it had "unlocked: Tachyon" something or other on it. Hope that helps.
Eh, not really. They were updated to work in diplomacy and then modified to work with the mod. The files for the planets have largely gone unchanged for some time.
That's not really true either, as Trib pointed out. You just have to look for them.
Then you read wrong. If it runs in entrenchment then it will work in Diplomacy with a tiny bit of updating. It won't work in Vanilla without some heavy editing in most cases, but since CB has a vanilla version already available, then it'll pretty much work in all three.
That is technically true because their owners don't actively work on them and post updates anymore, but other people still maintain working copies, especially with the tools that are available, and Harpo has done what he can to make his set as idiot proof as possible.
Absolutely! But they wouldn't be helpful to you.
I am wondering if the Flagship mini-mod might be showing a return
I really miss that one.
Great job on Distant Stars..
Thank you
Coming soon after the full release of DS 1.00.
I promise. It is really not that hard to update to be honest. Just have to modify the entity file for the extra files that are in.
1) My TEC hangers now only hold 2 squadrons instead of 3. Is this intentional?
2) I noticed that a Deep Space Sector had a small contingent of pirates. Not an actual base, but a few structures and a small fleet. Is this new? because I've never encountered this before.
3) When will you be updating the change logs on your site so I won't have to bother everyone with these annoying questions?
1. That was a goof. TEC and Vasari will be reset back to DS standard of 3 next full release.
2. That is known as the Pirate Blockade. Its been there a while. Just rarely seen.
3. That would be an understatement.
An understatement in the sense that the change logs REALLY need to be updated or and understatement in how annoying my questions are?
