Frequently Asked Questions
All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.
1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.
2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.
3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.
4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.
5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.
6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format? i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.
7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.
8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.
Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):
ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.
Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.
Some statistics...
Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...
400,000 Unique visits to the website12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website
That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.
Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!
Yeh! no worries, have a go at exporting it with those seperate material Id's. If your model is 1 mesh with 3 differnt materials, each material with its own UV set. Then hook up the associated texture files from the original Sins ships to the relavent materials UV's and it should work. If not, export each section seperatly to obj. and I will explain how to merge them in ModTool.
Thanks Super, I'll have a go at it once Easter is over.... I've got too much going on right now.
I'll post back with the results, hopefully they are fruitful
Sorry Siv... My bad. Easter is cancelled.
He just hopped right out in front of me...
ROFL
That is funny! Someone's a bit eager to get that sexy model done
But my Easter production and plans have little to do with bunnies and eggs....
OMG!!!! You killed the Easter Bunny!!!! You Bastard!!!!!
Someone call up mdman and Oatsey. They have a little continuity conflict.
lol I noticed that.
Not necessarily. The parts involving Thenos were listed as 'Several days ago'. In the lore timeline, Thenos has only been in my system a few hours to a day, tops. Granted real time, it's been months, but that's not really important. Besides, I'm willing to give mdman some leeway considering his inability to get online down there in Australia.
Got it in one Stant. He was originally going to post it before I posted my most recent, but then Australia went tits-up, and I just referred to it as having happened so that mdman could elaborate in the past.
And they say the U.S. got some good slang, I love it.....
The Brits know how to enjoy the good things.
And yes, he clarified that for me. For some reason it just didn't register after a point.
Your efforts are admirable Carbon, but not good enough to destroy the LAA myth, I don't think he and everyone else thinking about doing it feel like they're idiots yet for even considering it. I'm just going to throw down some simple discussion points for everyone to consider.Learn to read. It's called Large Address Aware, not Use More RAM. Being aware, does not make you able. I am aware that it is possible for a sniper to shoot and kill someone a mile and a half away, that knowledge does not make it possible for me to be able to do it as well. Awareness does not equal ability.Sins is 32bit, and therefor only allowed to use 2Gigs of RAM. Any attempts to use more then that causes the OS to kill the program. Changing one simple flag does not change the program to 64bit. If it did, don't you think every software developer out there would have done so years ago?.....................
im not sure if you will go on a rant but thought id just point it out from personal experience
i know about the LAA now and the effect does not work in sins, but it does in rome total war, non-LAA .exe with lets say, Roma Surrectum mod, laggs like hell for me, talking single digit fps in battles, slow scrolling on campaign map.I add the flag with cff explorer, and voila, the game is up in 90-100 range even on huge battles, so im not sure what it is, but its not always pointless
but since its about Sins, i yield, since it does nothing for Sins in performance nor memory usage.and for the true point for my postI have the phase gate loop problem, it because i run on too high settings? iv been thinking, cant the sound simple be removed from the phase gate? since the textbinner is not updated (saw in his thread its in testing) i cant figure it out myself, not sure what changed from older DS to the latest when it comes to the phase gate.
Hope you can help.
Cheers for the awsome sins close-to-vanilla experience!
Its an issue that keeps creeping up. I have even found it in the base game as well though not as often. As for the converters they should be updated by now though the one we have posted has not been yet.
i renamed "Effect_PhaseGate_Loop.ogg" to "Effect_PhaseGate_Loop.ogg1" in both the mod and vanilla, stopped that annoying problem atleast, tho you cant play MP, but works for me anyway, rarely play MP these days, cheerios!
PLEASE HELP!!!!!
Im having a problem with this mod and I need your help!
As you all know, the volcanic, ice, terran, and desert planets have 2 different skins (image below)
Well when I active the distant star mod, for some reason, the game only uses one skin for the volcanic, ice, desert, and terran planets (image below)
It doesnt effect the gameplay. I just find it kinda annoying having all the planets look alike. Can someone please help???
Then why bring it up after all of this time? Never disputed that some games didn't play better with it, only the fact that people were misrepresenting what it does and whoring it out as the second coming of Christ cure all fix that has an added bonus of curing cancer and ending world hunger when it isn't, otherwise the industry worldwide would have done it to every single program out there for shits and giggles and not worried about developing two versions of their products one for a 32bit OS and the other for a 64bit OS and just switched over to 64bit when market research shows that most everyone has that... It's the stupid people that are holding it up to the light and worshiping it and coming here preaching inaccurate information that sets me off.
Some time ago, I set a up two finish conditions on the effect playing the sound, one was a timer and the other was something like gravity well not in focus. Whenever the loop got stuck, all I had to do was zoom in on a battle and it shut off. I've since lost the work, though I have noticed the Novaliths doing that sometimes too. As for your more immediate issue, maybe inserting a blank sound file and naming it the same as the loop and checking to see if that helps with the not being able to play online...
The icons should all look the same no matter what version of DS or Sins you're using. As far as I know, each planet is only represented in the HUD by one look as well. In DS, there was only one texture included for each planet to help reduce memory and prevent crashes. In Diplomacy, post 1.2 patch, the ability to put them back in is there and with a little bit of work, it can be done and in part has been done already.
Ive messed around with the folders for the mod, and i found that if i delete the "GameInfo" folder for the mod, it fixes the problem, the game starts and the planets don't all look alike. But I don't want to have to delete an entire folder just to get one little visual effect fixed. I would just like to find the file (or files) that cause the problem and either delete them or fix them so I don't have this little ordeal.
Deleting the gameinfo folder, you actually lose most of what the mod gives you, basically reverting you back to plain unmodded Sins, and worse, the game looks for all of the entities listed in the entity manifest and cannot find any of them because you deleted the folder and slows everything down. So doing that is one of the worst things you can do.
What needs to happen is the entities need the other meshes added back in to get them to use the other planet looks.
Lore. Stant's battle, but from some of my guys' point of view.
This battle scene is getting interesting in the Lore..... I like it
