Multiplayer Games:We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

Please include as much information as possible, if you have an error log feel free to post it on these forums and we'll take it from there. If you can reproduce the error please include the error log (read below to find out how to enable error logs) and include as much detail on how to reproduce the problem.

Open the user.setting file (using Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor) and scroll down to the bottom 7 lines from the bottom is the line:LogOutput FALSEChange FALSE to TRUELogOutput TRUE
and from then on any Log files will be saved to the debug folder:Windows Vista/Windows 7: C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug or Windows XP: C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug
If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.
Frequently Asked Questions
All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.
1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.
2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.
3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.
4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.
5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.
6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format? i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.
7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.
8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.
Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):
ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.
Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Why does the Kol 3.0 make me think of a floating city when viewed from the front?
It looks great, very TEC, but something about it seems... odd.
The Kol made me jizz my pants. As such, I like it if the abilities and stats match the look. It's a mean looking bastard.
I've come to the conclusion that the reason I find these flagships odd is because they aren't one unified model. Not saying they're bad, but I think that's why I find them a bit weird, almost "uncanny valley"-ish. Of course, this can't be avoided, as the models used to make them are all different with their own art styles, but hey.

These mash ups are like preliminary sketches for me. They get me working in the right direction for the ship look, and then I build the main model around them, fixing the "wonky" parts as I go.
And yes, the abilities should match the look.... making it quite deadly indeed
Ok, I'll be PM'ing you the link for your flagship icons... but here is the result.
The TEC button is hardest to recreate but it's decent.
The Advent flagship mainview icon is a bit longer which is due to... well it's longer. You could use the 28x28 icon for the empire tree if you don't like it.
Feel free to use any, all or none of the changes I send to you. They are yours to use however you see fit.

Though the repetition in 'flagship' for the title of the ship bugs me, i know it's pretty impossible to avoid. It'll all be gone when my whole fleet is at level 10 anyhow
I like the flagships so far. Especially the Kol 3.0. i thought that the 2.0 was great as well, but you did so improve it, SivCorp.
The advent one could do with a better mashup i think. It looks a bit rushed, yet i can deal with the way it looks right now.
The vasari one intimidating. I hear you with the little wings on the sloping part of it, perhaps you could elongate the Kortul wings to envelope them?
The redundant flagship string can be removed from the English.str. I did this in my flagship mod I released last year.
Ah, i thought it was unavoidable, but silly me for ever thinking that with Sins and the ever-clever and highly creative Modders. It's not a big deal for me, just gets on the nerves of my OCD addled mind.
I like all the Kol versions so far. I like the eggless Vasari idea, though the egg bothers me little. The Advent I'm sure will continue to be tricky. Meanwhile, good to see another 2-D guy. I guess I can cross those off my list, pending Ryat's approval.
@Zombie - I'm working on a few models for surveillance station and planetary defense stations. If you don't mind, I would love to have you do the buttons for me.
And where did we leave off with the gunship and EWS models? Is that still on the table now that I have Rotskull doing some stuff?
Ya, I don't mind making buttons or icons based off of models. I have a decent enough process for doing this using the existing model so it's not too much effort.
Nice catch there Gavin that may be the cause of one of the mystery minidumps i've been chasing for quite some time now!
It will change the checksum, any changes in the entity files does. However to fix that for the next release of DS the file will just be deleted as we don't need to make any changes to it. Any files unchanged from original SoaSE version(s) aren't meant to be included in the mod and have kind of crept in over the last year due to modifications and removals of others.

Lots of work left to do so little time, the next actual DS patch should be coming out soon including a fair few fixes for nigh on everything if we keep up the rate we're working on it at the moment it will likely be 1.0

For all those that have been using Ryat's "Flagship" mod, here is a variation made of the Vasari Flag. Would this model be more acceptable?
Some of the texturing is done, the 6 Round things top side of the new bit are the missile tubes. Still needs window lights and the like, but before I go any further, I was looking for some feed back. I think its alot better, but I don't know, what do you think?

I prefer this model much more. I especially like how it has the vasari'ish insect look whether it was intended or not.
The middle part looks like eyes and the forks out the front look almost retractable.
All this means I get a nice mental image of this ship If Ryat doesn't want it... I'll take it.
I would like to see Sivcorp will bring for now and then take a possible vote.
Has SivCorp given a loose timeline. TBH, when I brought his up I assumed he had them game ready.
SuperZERO0, thats beautiful. This was basically how I had imagined the remade Vasari flagship would look, since the design had promise, but a slightly rushed execution. Unless Sivcorp pulls out some kind of monstrously awesome redux of his Hellion, this would get my vote (assuming this vote is public in any way.)

On a completely different note, what do you use to edit entity files. I wanted to give the planetary defenses more punch but opening the files in notepad just gives me a few understandable words and some gibberish. I'm supposed to be looking in gamedata, correct? maybe I just had the wrong file...
No, the file is correct its just in binary. You need to converter to change it to text to be understandable.
