Frequently Asked Questions
All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.
1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.
2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.
3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.
4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.
5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.
6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format? i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.
7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.
8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.
Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):
ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.
Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.
Some statistics...
Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...
400,000 Unique visits to the website12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website
That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.
Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!
At least I'm trying to help you out. That's, in part, how I found and fixed the Gunship problem.
Hehe its always better to have lots of people checking the files than just our team things do get missed trying to get the patches out to you guys as quickly as we can.
I'm always on the ball, I'm just not always nice about it. =D
Lol, well thanks for being nice about it
LOL! I'm told by most I need to learn "Tact" and how to "Sugar Coat" things... If I sugar coat things, people don't seem to understand or get the impression that there IS something wrong when I'm telling them about it.
I help run a forum that has been as large as over 300,000 members (at one point). Trust me, I see my fair share of flaming and trolling. It doesn't take much for people to find something to bitch about.
Hahahaha! You and I will get along great if people say you need to learn tact and sugar coat things.
I think it's more important to as point blank about a problem and tell it as it is than to sugar coat it and run the risk of a misunderstanding... or under estimating the problem and ignoring it.
Okay, bit of a problem, it it as though many of the images are not where the game expects them to be. Portraits are offset from the frame, sometimes with two portraits deviding it in half. Planet icons inacurate, stretched, or missing. Also, the loading screen images are offset, but that's been like that for many mods and is not a big deal.
You've got an ATI graphics card, don't ya?
No, don't think so anyway. I'm pretty sure it's an old Geoforce 6 (I don't know for sure, but I think I remember that from when I got my comp). Either that or it's that intel series 4 chipset thing. I cant exactly find something that just says "this is your graphics card".
Device Manager will tell you.
You may also need to update your drivers. Don't depend on Microsoft to do it for you.
Well, looks like it's the Intell chipset. And aparently the last driver update for it was back in '09.
I never trust the chipset. They are good for basics but you need a descent vid card if you want some quality.
Fair enough. Guess I'll live with it untill I can get a replacement.
I would try updating drivers (if there are any that exist) and see if that helps alleviate the problem.
I wish I knew more about modding and coding and stuff so I could diagnose why I cant play Distant Stars. I've been having crash problems with it since the day I started using it. I can't get past 10 minutes into a singleplayer game before it dies and sends me to the desktop. I've got all the latest video and audio drivers, windows updates, and am running the latest versions of sins and DS, yet on both a laptop and a desktop, one with a Geforce GTX 260M and the other with a Radeon HD 5670, both running Windows 7, Distant Stars always crashes about 10 minutes into the game. I have no idea why--I installed everything as directed.
What game settings are you using?
Map size, AI numbers, etc.
This link has gotten me thinking about Trade Ports and Refineries ...
https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/361782
this then got me thinking about the black market and how it all works for buying minerals and then selling minerals etc.
Has anyone thought about modding (if it is not hard coded) how much the cost to buy and sell minerals fluctuates and modding how slow or fast it returns to normal? I often feel like the black market doesn't inflate or deflate fast enough or high/low enough. This is true for buying and selling. Is this something that is possible to change?
Haven't checked it out. Think to look in gameplay.constants.
edit: Yup, that is where you find it

Yup it's modable. It's in the gameplay file.
I'll offer my planets for this mod as well. This mod got me into modding sins.
We will look into it. You have some nice planets that is for sure.
i can tweak it for you. i can't right now but i will. it is something that has needed tweaking for some time.
Let's say as an example I would start up a game on Systems of War. or Dopplegangers, which are two of my most commonly played maps. Settings would include 3 hard or unfair AI opponents, max speed research, economy, etc. small fleet sizes, and all graphics settings are maxed. I also use the awesome music and stuff in the secondary DS folder.
There is no game slowdown or stuttering or lag or anything of that nature--as far as anyone would be able to tell, the game runs flawlessly for the first several minutes. But then suddenly around 10-15 minutes in, the game crashes and the screen goes black while Windows searches for a solution, then it won't be abe to find one, asks me to close program, and SINs will close. If I disable the mod I can play fine.
Pretty sure it's a memory issue. Bring graphics down a notch or two and trim your empire tree to just what you need. Settings can help do that.
Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity / Diplomacy v1.2 is now out!
It's not Thursday... now in my half asleep state after work I shall have to look at making a new patch, this should be interesting
Hmm, never mind there weren't any changes from the last beta to 1.2 so, enjoy! lol
