This is it. This is the post that I hope will jumpstart not only the Forums, but also the Metaverse and every gamers interest in Galactic Civilizations II. Please take the time to read it entirely - I can guarantee that most of you will find your passion for GalCiv2 renewed with a great vigor.
I have been thinking lately about the current state of the GalCiv2 universe. My deduction is this: the forums are neglected and are not as full of life as they have been in the past. The Metaverse, once a great source of fun and excitement for gamers, is now in shambles, with hardly anyone ever posting a game to it anymore. 95% of all MV empires are unused and abandoned. Finally, the passion and love for Galactic Civilizations II has died down. It used to be that every day every hour, there would be dozens of posts, and dozens of games being logged into the MV. Those were the days when we all took pride in this game and in this site.
Unfortunately, those days seem to have passed us by. People are moving on to different games and getting bored with GalCiv2. They have forgotten what an incredible accomplishment this game is and what an awesome, creative, helpful, and enjoyable tool the GalCiv2 forums are. They have forgotten how great it felt to hit the "Submit" button after finishing a Metaverse game. The point of this post is to attempt to renew the passion and love for this great game in the hearts of all of its fans and supporters.
I am by far not the best, most experienced, or most well-known player of this game. I am a relatively new player with alot to learn. But I believe I excel in one thing that many of the most experienced players are lacking in: Passion for the game. Take a moment and think about what it felt like when you played your first ever game of Galactic Civilizations. Yes, for many of you, that was a VERY long time ago, but still try. Remember your feeling of immense excitement when you first saw this website. It was bustling with avid gamers and there were countless numbers of players and posts, not to mention links that took you all over the site. How great was it to join (or make) your first Metaverse Empire? It had to feel pretty good, right? Remember those great times - they weren't that long ago.
Stardock achieved so much with this incredible game. I cannot begin to give them enough credit. They succeeded in creating a game that finally let you "go to the stars." They created not one, not two, but twelve (!!!) different alien races, each of which had its own unique history and purpose in the galaxy. Don't forget that Stardock also managed in creating possibly the most intelligent AI in the entire gaming world. If you were about to play you're first game, and you thought to yourself, "Well, I had better ramp the difficulty up to 'Suicidal' since the normal settings are probably too easy." I'm going to bet that you learned your lesson VERY quickly on why you couldn't have that mindset with this game.
Remember the first time that you ever went to the forums. You took a quick look around and you were able to deduce that this is one dedicated, helpful, and creative group of gamers. You saw post after post where a veteran gamer would be helping out a beginner with a question that was extraordinarily simple, yet seemed so hard for that person at the time. You probably had some of those beginner questions yourself, too. No matter how simple the question, however, the veterans would never fail to give all the help that they could. Friendships that you never thought were possible just because of a game were formed through the forums. New ideas for how to make the next expansion were formulated, and people even began to come up with their own creative versions of the game called Mods.
Remember the first time you ever joined or created an MV empire. You were suddenly part of a great group of friends. You were immersed in empire to empire rivalries. Yet, no matter how big the rivalry; no matter what empire you were on; you guys were all one big group of friends, united by a single game.
Unfortunately, those "glory" days seem to have passed us by. I believe, however, that they can come back. That's what I'm trying to do - bring them back. So what if there are no new expansions for GalCiv2. In a couple years GalCiv3 is going to come out, AND GalCiv2 New Frontiers is going to be created even sooner then that, so don't worry. But in the meantime - make a Mod, or, if you can't, find someone who knows how and ask them to join you in creating a Mod. Unite your ideas with his or her skills, and create your own version of the game. The options for what you can create are endless. If you don't want to create a Mod, and you're just looking for a new way to play the game, just go to the library and download one of the hundreds of Mods available. It's easy, and they're free.
If you are playing a game of GalCiv2, and you think that you're current game is extra-special, then create an AAR (After Action Report) and post it in its respective site. Share your experiences with others and let them enjoy your game as much as you did. Don't forget to include screenshots!
Be a part of the Metaverse. This is an incredible achievement made by Stardock. It is a fantastic way to make new friends and be a part of something different. Try and make the top ten, dominate the galaxy, or just play to play. You can make your own empire, get all of your friends to join, and corsair through the galaxy, battling other empires for that coveted 1st Place medal. You can even create and post your own background story and ship style for your empire. None of the default ships seem to fit your race? Make a Mod of them yourself, or have someone in your empire do it for you. The MV is an incredible part of GalCiv2.
Now here is my list of things that you can do to make this website thrive again:
Since I am fairly certain that this post is taking up quite a bit of your time and space, I'm going to wrap it up with one final note.
This game is incredible and all of its fans are incredible people, too. You guys were smart enough to recognize a good game and get it. Good for you. Now make the experience that you get from this game even more incredible by being active on this website. This is the make or break moment for this game. All of you guys hold the future of this game and this website and this incredible group of friends in your hands. Please make this future one to remember.
Finally, any comments and replies that you guys have would be greatly appreciated. I hope to see many more active users on this website in the future to come. I am also going to include a list of different threads that I have made on the GalCiv2 forums concerning the various "Jumpstart" projects of mine. Thanks you very much for bearing with me throughout this long post. And yes - I know what you're thinking. This guy is the absolute King of Long-Winded Posts. Best Regards now and forever.

List of Threads for "Project Jumpstart"
Well put in many ways Cypher. I know that I will be around indefinitely growing my empire, and encouraging my members. New conquests are still being won by my mighty Kzinti warriors each day, and there are always more sentients to eat!
GC2 is in the latter stages of it's life-cycle, but there is still lots of fun to be had!
As for being the king of long posts, you'll have to fight Mumble for that honor. He's ahead of you by a couple thousand posts probably so It's going to take a lot for you to steal the title.
Sentient species taste better...
I am working on a mod based on the Metaverse Empires that are still active. Hopefully it will spark some interest.
@ KP: Thanks for the reply. It's much appreciated. I think that everything will be renewed anyway when GalCiv3 or New Frontiers comes out, but this game deserves it, too. As for Mumble beating me out as King of Long-Winded Posts - of course he beats me! That guy has more posts then the number of days I've been alive, and I've been alive for a reasonable amount of time. In the ToE thread, I said that I'm the king if you don't include Mumble or Kryo. Thanks again. Best Regards.
@ Seth: I bet your mod will spark interest. I know that I'll personally download it. Thanks for the heads-up. Best Regards.
@ Everyone reading this Post:
I would just like to add that various players have told me that GalCiv3 will be out anywhere from 2010 to 2012. New Frontiers is expected to come out sometime between this year and the start of next year - so don't worry - the Galactic Civilization's series has many more years ahead of it. Best Regards.
Sorry for the triple post, but if anyone finds that they have been encouraged by this post to come back to the game, you can let me know here so that I have some understanding of the effectiveness of this post. If you want, you can Private Message me instead. Posting replies here will also help you returning players or new players get known by other MV empires, and they may do a little recruiting. And finally, if someone just wants to drop a comment about the post in general, feel free to do it here. Thanks. Best Regards.
Almost forgot - Every now and then, I am going to just make a quick reply here, just so that this post gets bumped back up to the main group of recent posts; it'll help to make sure that this post gets noticed by more people. Thanks.
You have inspired me to play a new game of Galciv2 soon. I hope others will do the same!
I got Endless Universe just a few days ago and will submit my first game after years to the metaverse soon. This game is so addictive and there were very nice additions wihh the expansions and update 2.x. Funny enough Stardock didn't polish the user interface, things that drove me mad in Dread Lords are still there and you know what, it was like coming home when I realized that some things never change.
@ GJDriessen: Great to hear! I really appreciate the reply - enjoy your game and have fun conquering the galaxy! Best Regards.
@ puntarenas: Hey! Have fun with the new game - thanks for the reply and have fun knocking some aliens around! Best Regards.
The game's been out for a while, it happens.
I was shocked to see how slow the forums were though since the last time I came her everything was still buzzing but now not so buzzy- as evidence by no one having posted in my thread.
Having bought Endless Universe only recently after playing DL over a year ago, I feel a bit sad at the state of the forum.
Especially as there seem to be many changes in TA (2.x).
Some more activity and answers to posts would indeed be good.
Especially as the search function doesn't seem to work for me.
@ Galacerty: Yeah, I know this kind of stuff happens - I'm just trying to keep this game popular until the next version comes out. Then I won't have to worry because the forums will probably go insane with people who love the new game. Also, I think that any new player that views this post will be encouraged to hang around for a while. Best Regards.
@ ElZoido: Yeah, I'm hoping I can stir up a little more interest with this post. The state of the forums is great, but there a still a fair amount of people that stop by. BTW - the search function on these forums has never worked. I don't know the exact trick, but someone told me that you could search these forums through Google. I'll try and find the post on exactly how to do that. Thanks for the replies everyone! Best Regards.
I would just like to add that I have just created a new post entitled "The Metaverse Recruiting Center". This post is for anyone who is either new to the game or just new to the MV. You can go there and make a reply to the thread if you have any questions related to the MV or if you are unsure about what empire you wish to join. It'll help you get noticed by the active empires, who will then try and help you decide on which empire to join. Thanks and Best Regards.
I never was one for metaverse, like always there's a way to make big scores then you just have to redo it over and over and over to become the one and only empire... it's ... boring
for google try to include "site:forums.galciv2.com" in your search terms
@ whismerhill: I respect your opinion on the MV. I personally think that it's great, but like I said, I respect your opinion. Also, thanks for the info on how to exploit Google. Much appreciated. Best Regards.
bookmarking for my replies
I play more offline games than MV games, with normal games there's more creative control and you could do what ever you want. I am the only MV empire emperor that doesn't exclusivly play on the MV.
That's perfectly fine with me Seth. I do get around to playing normal games as well. The important thing is that you occasionally are active in the MV and you took the time to make a really cool empire. Thanks for the reply. BTW - I like the Geckodon ship style and tech tree - very creatively done! Best Regards.
Ya I know it's just I don't like those players just get Galciv 2 for the MV I mean that's just them playing for the scores and such, I play Galciv 2 for fun, also thanks forthe comment on the ship style and tech tree.
Your welcome. Your hard work deserved a decent comment.
I definitly did not just get the game for the MV - truth be told, I had never even heard of the MV before I came to this website, which was about a month after I got the game - by then, I was already hooked to GalCiv2. Best Regards.
The people who score over a million points for a game, or beat it in less than one year, put me off submitting games. There did not seem any point.
( I never did get into the Alt Meta ) Now these guys are giving up, would make it a good time for ordinary players to come back. I submitted my first game for a long time. My aim is to be top in the empire I belong to, the Gerontocracy.
Since I think I am the only active member, that should not be too difficult.
Also I have been playing Galciv 2 for years now. Since I was twelve.
@ Embird: Good to hear that you're playing again. If you go to the MV Recruiting Center, you'll see that I still have the Gerontocracy in the "Active" list - it's nice to know that I put you guys in the right list. Thanks for the reply.
@ Seth: Since you were twelve!?! That's pretty young. Good to hear that you're still a dedicated player.
Yep, in fact I had started playing Galciv 2 in late November which was aroud the time the Wii and PS3 became popular although I didn't give a damn about either, I liked my PC more and because I liked PC more I got teased by this snoby rich kids who made fun of me for not having a Wii and prefering PC over it. It was like a minature console v PC war between the two of us.

After I got DA I stopped playing Galciv 2 because DA seemed to hard and then I got into other games but during the summer of that year I got back into Galciv 2 and then whenI heard about TA I got really excited.
