Keep in mind this entire post, that I quite enjoyed playing the Generals the way they are. They were extremely fun, and added something fresh.
However, I would like to see Generals taken a bit further, or at least a couple of them. I know the PR department likes to stretch things, but when I read about Generals, they said they will give a RTS feel to them. That really intrigued me actually, the idea of players who are playing single "Demigods" running around smashing things, while they're other Demigods that are controlling a bunch of minions trying to push the frontlines.
However, what Generals ended up being is more like Assassins with pets. They are up on the Frontline, with little more diversity then what original Assassins had. The 2 Generals in at the moment are both melee also, with a few pets that come from death, and the store bought minions. And I love to play, and I hope they stay in the game.
I would like to see a couple of Generals allowed to have a bunch of summoned minions, and possibly 2-3x more bought minions. They have a ranged attack, and possibly a few buffs that could have a rather large radius. This seems a bit over-powering, but the General itself wouldn’t be the combat, the General would be more of a base then an actual combating unit. Where instead of just being right where his units are, he would have enough to actually split the units up, trying to flank, and make the Assassins think the General is going to push somewhere, but he’s actually pushing somewhere else.
Another thing that would be interesting, is if Generals didn’t gain XP from killing mobs, but instead they were trickled XP for how much of the map their team controlled.
I would love to see this kind of General in the game, mostly because it would be very unique to games now days, and that’s pretty rare to have something unique. It probably wouldn’t be ground breaking or anything, but it would be very interesting to see.
First things first, I think the interface to control the minions needs to be much... much... better.
I've accidently moved my General in to attack when I really just wanted my minions to attack. I can't easily get them back to "escourt" mode (which they default too). None of the standard RTS controls work correctly (ctrl-click, shift-click). They essentially play like Assassins with pets.
If it's easy to make mistakes, then the interface is wrong. The interface for generals is presently wrong. It's kind of tough to address gameplay issues with them when we can't experience them the way the design intended...
(I could see buying a bunch of priests and gunners and sending them to fight with your creeps while you do something else (buy stuff, fight somewhere else), but the game doesn't play that way right now)
@lore weaver: even if the interface indeed needs some improvements, it already includes ways to only give orders to some of your minions, but it wouldn't hurt to be a bit better
@klaleara: generals that doesn't gain xp from kills but from map occupation, that would be fun! Not sure it is doable, i mean not sure it is possible to ballance that correctly.
Indeed demigod needs at least a general with MANY minions. I would be great to have a general, that has very low hp, but a lot of minions, and the capacity to divert a certain % of taken domages to them. And maybe also fairly low attack but a spell that makes demigods more vulnerables against minions or one that finish what minions have began...
