Well first off I want to say I am super psyched about this game. I'm a huge fan of MoM and have been looking for something like it for many many years. I also think that StarDock is qualified, in general, to make such a game.

What's the problem? Do you guys need art? There are tons of great artists out there looking for work. I'm just confused.
x
That's actually a picture of Brad in-game.
It's concept art, so not the final.
I don't see anything wrong with this worker. It's a human worker.
And in alpha. Please, stop being lazy and next time explain what you think it's wrong or would be better since you opened a thread, because it could be many things, than it's possible to see if you have any good point. You didn't showed any, which is awful. You should be the one saying what the problem is.
Heres the thing about concept art... The game never actually ends up looking like it. Sure, it may resemble it, but in game it will probably look very dissimilar.
Hehe... although... to me that image yells 'Sam Gamgee!' Dunno why...
Well, Sam Gamgee was a gardener, which is a type of worker.
Sure, that concept would probably just influence in the picture when you choose to produce a worker if at all and if thats possible. In the gameplay it's another thing. Just a concept like said.
Cloths look real to me, something that could be used and looks well attached/blended. Face seems to me like a commom character that could be amongst the populance, like it should. Prioritize the cloths.I like the face from that character because the heavy-brown-bearded-worker-that-you-barely-can-see-the-face that looks like the dwarve from Lord of the Rings, have been overused like it is in Setllers. This one gives a better realistic feel of a human to me than those. To multiplicy workers tough, you need a character with less distinctive looks unlike this one and more like the bearded worker or they will feel to much like the same. But in this game (strategy games) you don't see character looks aside from the wearing, that also apply to warriors. What is the most important, like for the warriors, is the wearing. They don't have a distinctive face but are all alike or bound to have any face. The face, even tough fine to me, was just to complement the concept that is basically the vestments. I think thats why they used the producer hair, to maybe joke a little, that is the only thing alike if I remember.
um okay let's see:
why does a miner-type need a pauldron? Why does he need to protect that one shoulder? Why is the fist directly perpendicular to the camera, and yet the pickaxe is going down - that makes no sense. Why is he holding his arm out like that, that's a horribly uncomfortable position. Also on a style note - why does he have the haircut of the character "buzz" from Home Alone?
Basically what I'm saying is, this just technically speaking is really bad art. I am an art teacher and I have students (kids) who can draw this well. It's remarkable that some of you are trying to argue otherwise... I wonder if you've ever seen real art like from good artists... look up Samwise Didier from Blizzard or Yoshitaka Amano from Square, they are the best. But if you look at the concept art from almost any professional game (and even many indy games) you can find tons of great work.
And the point of my post was, do you guys need artists? Because I know many who'd love to work on this project.
Yeah I totally agree with you keith, if people can't see what's wrong with that picture then...errrr, I guess there's no real scope for debate. I'm generally totally in favour with the art style the game is going for but this just happens to be a bit of a weak example... man I hope the guy/girl who drew it doesn't read this... on second thought it's great, good for you
Concept art is allowed to look like crap
Well, that shoulder seems to be holding the weight of his satchel and maybe even the tools on his back. So maybe the pauldron is just an exagerated shoulder pad.
He could just have a loose grip on the pickaxe... You know, so the weight of the metal part pulls it down until the shaft is held down by his palm. Doesn't seem so unbelievable to me.
This is where my explanations run out
I agree that the worker concept art isn't very good. I do actually like the overall style of it, though, but the implementation wasn't so great. Like you said the pose looks unnatural, and it's overall just not so good. But to take the worst piece of concept art and a screenshot of the game a year and a half before predicted release, one that doesn't even include lighting or shadows or probably even final art, and to "do you need artists?" is kind of silly.
Not that i think that the picture of the first post looks like crap as i only see some details that i could consider wrong (for concept art as it is). But i would agree in that this picture is one of the weakest examples of the art we have seen.
Although what they did with that picture and how it looks on the Medallions are quite a bit different, and much better looking.
As far as art goes, I favor "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I wouldn't claim that concept art as beautiful, but I don't think it's bad. If it was a final product and the best that could be made, I'd have a problem, but that's not the case.
I'm sure SD could use more artists, but I think the issue has to do with paying them and that they probably would also need to live in exotic Michigan.
yeah man, you whip out a quick concept scetch and color it for taste of style. Obviously this art is nothing like the dragon and such that we've seen from them through more official venuews. Personally, I suck at faces, and really that is the only place where I see a flaw in that picture. And then I suspect the creator didn't take as much time as they would for a unit that might actually be used in official non-concept art.
Games and movies tend to esterotype things so much, that anything aside what people used to see seems weird. One thing is for sure, this worker is not the usual type we see. If they made it has a joke, I don't care because I liked something from it. What bothers is things being the same over and over. That is a plausible worker. Just because he is a worker doesn't mean he should look like someone who live at the streets and have no vanity whatsoever so to brush his hair before going to work. I like it more than the image of the Shaman. At a first moment tough, the worker was strange for me, but thats because like I said, I got used to see esterotypes so much. And this same thing over and over is boring. If that worker is weird, look yourselves a bit more at the mirror or go over the streets. People are different. Its getting tiring to see things being used over and over just because they are already confortable for the eye.
You know, its much easier for an artist to make a beliaveble good looking character than a commom one who have imperfections and still looks real and plausible. Thats why I liked more (and some others) the girl character in Portal. And actors considered gorgeous being used over and over at movies and doing only roles where they are godlike or perfection, I usualy skip that crap. Adam Sandler is one of the greatest director/actor of time that hold a strong integrity. He have notion of that. A single movie he did, worth all the movies Brad Pitty will ever be into in his life which have no values. Why do people need to be so stupid to only feel confortable with what is perfect and unnatural even when themselves are not that? Thats pathetic, there is a lot of sympathy for that worker. I not 100% sure if they would brush the hair like that in older times (tought I really think they could), but his anatomy is beleaveble, and a lot considering that is an alpha image.
It's like that people that are crazy about mangás (different from likeing) where almost everyone are human of unreal perfection. How pleased I would be to trow that retarded minds into garbage. How can someone worship that. It's the kind of thing that are just there to trow people out of what could be the beauty of reality and see natural/real things has inferior. Lets do a big cosplay movement. Now there is a group doing a movement contrary of that, with everyone with their own commom faces and thats about showing the differences there are in the world and that people should be careful to not be corrupted by draws, movies and propagandas that hire any "generally assumed has 'gifted' good looking person" even when lacking skill. There is a dumb big demand for that.
There is a new game from playstation (Fat Princess) comming that features a princess that suffers of obesity and likes to eat a lot. She was captured and is in prison, Its hard to save her because of her weight, still many are trying to save her from captive. Go see over the internet how stupid feminists was against the game featuring a fat princess. I have read in one site, a woman was talking against the game, and by the end said that was afraid her little and pretty doughter would see that and want to be like the princess. We know how many "idiots"(low age need to be excluded) suffer from eating dissorder because of the models and skinny princesses right? That is deviating to hide bad ideals not even herself can assume, what could happen of that is a girl be more acceptable to her weight if she can't change it. They want Sonny to cancel the game. One of them wrote for sonny and said: "I can't imagine anyone that wants to save a fat princess in the first place". Thing is, in the game they want to save the princess at all costs, and a side gives her food to eat to allow her not to be saved. They claim that is being desrespectful at fat people. I have seem at gamespot people there are fat and told that do not mind of that but instead think its cute to have it. It's feminists that not even are overweighted saing that, truth is that they don't like fat, they are the ones with the prejudice. Not many games have princesses (and characters that are means of holding power or be the protagonist) that is not perfect or not very gifted in looks and thats is disgusting for culture when abused.
Thats why I simpathyze with the worker. It looks normal and kind of natural, it's weirdly hard to find designs that look for that (some reasons for it, because it's harder to do and wrongly less disired).
Flyguy7 you may have read way to much into this lol I mean......yea......
This all sounds familiar!!!!
That's you exactly. And you think that because it's little to nothing you can understand. Skip my posts, it's what I usually always do to yours.
If one thinks for it a little while, one can most likely work out what is being said. But if I have to stop every 3rd sentance in a wall of text and go "Wait, what?", something is wrong. You may even have points in there, somewhere, but it continues to elude us.
It's like you write it in Czech and then run in through Babelfish.
And so the Great Flame Wars began...
Speaking of ignoring posts, I saw a feature in Impulse where you could Blacklist users. I assume this allows you to effectively block/ignore posts from particular users. Is that true? If so, any chance we might see this feature in the forums?
Girlz girlz please.....
Now I will second you both, as is customary. Choose your weapons ladies, handbags, wet lettices or sequined gloves?
Yeah, why can't we discuss something interesting? Something we can all agree on. Like scientology?
Indeed. And the economy, politics, religion, and favorite sports teams.
Don't forget food, sex, and television. Everyone's so agreeable about them.
My dad could totally kick your dad's ass.
