In my opinion a big win for a game no one really knew about. SINS is a truly a sucess story. This game is everything I have always wanted in a space strategy game. If that wasn't enough, join the SINS microexpansion Entrenchment BETA now for $9.99. If you do, I'll play you. Let's hope Demigod is the winner next year, it sure looks like it will get my vote. Here is what IGN had to say about SINS fo game of the year:
This is a controversial choice, to be sure, as many games scored higher than Sins of a Solar Empire. Yet during our discussions it was the one game we kept coming back to; considering it shipped way back in February that was telling. This is the game that we may have easily played the most in 2008. It's that much fun. It's also a game that has had incredible post-release support in the form on free enhancements and additions from developer Ironclad Studios, which proved to be the little studio that could. Thanks to its wildly original and fresh take on RTS and its compelling gameplay that kept us up late at nights, this is our PC game of the year.
In the Best Strategy Game article, IGN said:
Many PC gamers were weaned on space operas, from Star Wars to Star Trek to Wing Commander. A penchant for interstellar warfare is embedded in our DNA. Yet that's just part of the reason we're so drawn to Sins of a Solar Empire. The other, bigger, reason is that we've never quite seen anything remotely like this awesome game from a relatively tiny developer. This massive strategy game lets you easily command humongous fleets spread out across multiple star systems in real-time. It's brilliant, addictive, and a triumph in every way.
In the Best New IP article, IGN said:
It's so easy to put together a sci-fi setting; just throw together some funky looking alien species, come up with strange names, and throw it all together. Yet it's much harder to create a sci-fi universe that actually captivates and interests you. With Sins of a Solar Empire, Ironclad has created a setting that makes you want to learn more. Even the warships in the game convey a large amount of character. There's a rich universe to discover in Sins of a Solar Empire, and judging by the success of the game, it's safe to say that we'll have a chance to learn more.
In the Most Innovative Design article, IGN said:
In a game that encapsulates so much--from maintaining vast research trees to the infrastructure and orbital makeup of conquered planets--it doesn't cease to amaze us how well all the information is structured and presented to the player. This isn't a turn-based game like Civilization; it's all in real-time. Yet its scope reaches far beyond RTS games such as Command & Conquer. It's a true fusion of 4X and RTS, and the delightfully complex, endlessly replayable result is something nobody could really appreciate without the fantastically intuitive interface around which developer Ironclad wrapped its various systems.
Just for easy reference SINS beat out a ton of great games. For Game of the Year, it beat:
Fallout 3
Grand Theft Auto IV
Left 4 Dead
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
For Best Strategy Game, it beat:
Red Alert 3
Europa Universalis: Rome
Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization
Spore
For Best New IP, it beat:
Dead Space
Left for Dead
World of Goo
For Most Innovative, it beat:
AudioSurf
Far Cry 2
There was no doubt for me that Sins should be strategy game of the year. But game of the year really surprised me. I think its good encouragement to small developers.
Most innovative...Far cry 2? I don't really see why Far cry 2 is so special
Woozers!!! I guess my IGN hatin' days may be coming to a close. Shockingly enough those are all the awards (except GotY unless it was cumulative thing) that I expected Sins to get and for every other awards offering it got screwed except for the Strat awards.
I cant wait to see the "Original Sin" edition of Sins after the x-packs come out! So when will the website get updated?
Haha, there are about 10 people pouring crap on SINS for game of the year in the comments to that article. Of those, 7 didn't play it, 1 played it and didn't like it, and 2 don't say if they played it or not.
That speaks a pretty damn well clear picture to me.
LMAO!
Bunch of naabs
Can you give us Link to that comments please - would love to see it hahahaha
It's on the links above, scroll down.
Best New IP is hardly something you can give to Sins - we don't have any actual backstory. Giving an award for what might be there is asinine.
Game of the Year is semi-okay, given that their other selections are based purely on ad revenue. GTA4? Fallout 3? Both games that are complete failures on the PC, simply because the developer didn't spend a shred of time actually making it work on the platform.
Most innovative should have gone to Spore, and there's not even a question there. Simply because there have been games like Sins before (Sins base template is identical to Conquest), while there has not been a game like Spore before. But given that IGN nominated FarCry 2 in this category, their competence is in question anyway.
Best Strategy Game - yes. Again, some very shoddy nominations by IGN, but this is the award Sins does deserve, if only for being one of the few games this year to be actually well thought out, finished, polished and optimized.
Far Cry 2, a nominee for most innovative?? That game is a half-empty sandbox, filled with fire-ants (analogies gone wild )
Nice to see that Dead Space was nominated, it's quite good actualy.
Red Alert 3, it's fun and funny, but not exactly "RTS of the year" material.
And finally, congratulations to Ironclad for making a game (nearly) everyone loves
Go Sins! A well deserved award in my opinion.
Ah got it now...
And I also added reply too
This pretty much exactly matches my opinion. I'd add that, looking at that list, it's been a pretty crappy year for PC games in general and PC strategy in particular.
Edit: Although come to think of it, why on Earth wasn't King's Bounty: The Legend nominated in the strategy category? It's a hell of a lot more fun than Sins ever was.
Hey, there was that introductory cutscene. Can't forget that
Very much agreed.
There also wasn't much competition. In fact, there wasn't much competition for most of these awards.
I'm not sure how you can say that. A backstory has nothing to do with whether or not something is a new Intellectual Property. It's an award for best new game that is not a sequel.
Not the way IGN interpreted it. They're very much going for the universe. The fluff - which is a little wierd since there's so very little of it actually there (yet?).
But seriously, FarCry 2 "most innovative"-nomination? Because they had pretty fire? IGN really didn't put a lot of time into their candidate list.
Wow, I really don't put much stock in "Game of the Year", but I really wasn't expecting Sins to grab any GotY award.
I really should give the game a chance, it seems.
Try the demo, there's not much to the game beyond what's shown there so you'll easily be able to determine if you're interested or not.
If I could have one wish from IC and SD regarding Sins, it would be for them to get a Babylon 5 license and make a Sins B5 edition.
There has not been a real B5 game produced beyond a flop StarFury shooter that really blew big heavy chunks.
The IP is over 15 years old now so JMS and Babyloian Products should want to do such a thing. Frankly I don’t know why a triple A title for B5 was never made but Sins is the perfect engine for it methinks. Now with all these awards it would seem like a no-brainer.
By extension this could be a new product line for Sins. Do it for B5 first then ST then SW (maybe) then BSG -etc...
There's never been an officially licensed B5 game released, I don't know what Starfury game you could be referring to. There was going to be a AAA title that was, in fact, a Starfury shooter (initially, anyway) but it was cancelled before release. From Wikipedia:
How odd... I actually played, for about 30 minutes, a StarFury game. I think I got it from a Babylon multimedia media disk or maybe downloaded it. It was so long ago and unremarkable that I can quite remember. It may very well have been unlicensed that would go far in explaining the shit thing that is was. If memory serves is was almost identical to the recent BSG viper shooter released several months ago. When I played it reminded me of it clearly.
Nonetheless I think for IC to do something like this would be new ground for a developer and would also serve a large demographic and really give a big boost to the profit margin on Sins.
The game you're talking about is I've Found Her, and it's hardly "shit". It's 100% faithful to the series, which is why it's not a simple Wing Commander clone, but has newtonian physics. Not everyone can handle Newton, but that doesn't make it "bad".
And it's not called "Shooter". It's called Space Sim, a subgenre of Flight Sims.
BSG...
I would be satisfied with a "Sins of a Galactic Civilization" tough.
Ummm... Wow a hostile response. WTF?? Lets not attempt to insult peoples intelligence - shall we? We are talking about different things here. I think I would know a simulation when I see one given I went to graduate school for global modeling. Additionally I used to fly in helicopters a lot (tour company as well as the military) so I'm pretty familiar with flight and digital recreations of it as well. Anyway, you are talking about what I think is a mod project by some guys in Russia. Simply put I am not. I am talking about a game very similar to this BSG title.
how 'bout that Sins, eh?
That thar Sins be teh awesomesauce?
