i know i did and still do!
dont get me wrong i love sins but i miss homewold 2 and cant get it to work on vista or with my 8800 card
did you play the homeworld games?
what did like about them?
do you wish sins had some homeworld features?
do you still play?
If you do plan of playing HW2 you should also grab the HW2 graphical update mod - again, purely cosmetic, but it introduces parallax mapping and per-pixel lighting. It's state of the art.
Well way before i got sins or the demo I'v been on homeworld 2 for a long time but i got bored with it and moved to sins like most people may of did but still its a classic and many love it.
yeah I heard of that mod
FEAR MY NINJA SPAM!!!
10-12 years ago, my neighbor played these slow games called Fallout and HomeWorld which I didn't understand the charm off (didn't try them back when they were new....)
I haven't played HomeWorld but HomeWorld II I gave a try. The things that struck out to me were:
I played until the mission with the standard ships (medium damage, HP and speed) in the asteroid which you learn about so your weapons do more damage to them. Then it crashed and I didn't bother with it anymore.
I like this: "Lack of rewarding micromanagement". I guess preferences differ.
One key battle I remember from Homeworld.
I had placed extensive minefields in all cardinal directions. With the good old 'jump signature detected' I prepared to watch the fireworks. Unfortunately, the jump signature was ABOVE my mothership. So... I watched some fireworks allright, but not the expected ones.
It's one of the best RTS space games, and in my opinion, the best story-wise. I still remember the voice of Fleet: "Hiigara is burning.". Good voice acting.
So yeah, I miss it. I wouldn't mind seeing HW 3. Relic has, supposedly, reacquired the licence (sierra owned it for a while, I believe) but they're rather busy with Warhammer 40K stuff these days. (Which is a rather good series of games, IMO).
All this chatter about Homeworld and no one has mentioned Sword of Stars???
Mind boggleing.
Why? I don't really like Sots I didn't really understand the tactical combat part of the game and the ships look a bit strange.
I thought the tactical combart part was easy to understand. Aside from the lack of usable information about weapon stats in-game, the combat is easy to figure out, all you need to do is play it enough and you will get the hang of it. Don't ever use plasma cannons though, they suck total ass unless the enemy has deflectors. Fusion cannons are also meh, especially compared to armor piercing mass drivers.
The ships probably look strange because they aren't colored various shades of brown and lit by too much bloom.
Odd. You liked HW? Yet you didn't get SotS?
I guess I thought the connection was obvious.
It should be, considering the geniuses behind HW and HW: Cataclysm also created SotS.
Um, not exactly. HW was made by Relic. But you're right in that HW: Cataclysm was Barking Dog Studios which later turned into Rockstar Vancouver, Some of the employees in Barking Dog split off to two companies that should be familiar - namely, Ironclad and Kerberos. It's a small world...
I'm a fairly big fan of SOTS myself, but I have to agree with GJDriessen - there's not that much of an automatic cross-appeal between the two. SOTS is sandbox 4x with ship design, Homeworld was RTS with a strong story. Their one common feature is ship combat; there's a lot of other stuff that are left to individual tastes.
As such, I find it more natural to lump SOTS and SOASE together, but that's also inaccurate...
For my part I like all three, though.
Actually, I believe that Martin Cirulis and Arinn Dembo of Kerberos and Barking Dog were part of the development team for Homeworld.
I just wish Homeworld 2 would get put on Impulse or something. I think I'd even be willing to buy it off of Steam. My CD has long since disappeared. Maybe now that TA is on Impulse, there is a little hope...
If your getting sick of HW2 understandable when compaired to the Original. But then theres mods!

DID I!!! I STILL DO
Ship combat is much better in HW2 and I don't like the way ships look like in Sots. They look much better in HW2 and SINS imho.
If I want a decent 4x game I would play Galciv2 or the upcoming Distant Words, as I don't like the tactical combat so much in an 4x game. In particular if it is not so easy to understand how to master it.# It shouln't be about battle skills in such games but rather about empire skills. Note that I've tried the demo of Sots.
# e.g. I don't want to play a 1000 battles before I understand what the weapon stats are etc..
Well, if you don't like tactical combat in 4x games, then SotS really isn't for you, even though the old classic Master of Orion 2 had tactical combat with direct user input.
True, sounds like GalCiv is really his cup of tea then. It's not mine however. Indeed, I really hated GC2 no matter how hard I tried to like it. Somethings just cannot be done.
Never really played Homeworld... tried the demo, or maybe the Cataclysm's demo once. Dunno.
But i have HW2. It's... I don't play it much but i love it. Beatiful, very good music... maybe not the most balanced game and against AI it's pretty much making a mixed fleet and crushing them without any real strategy. Haven't played MP. Love the 3D space. SW Warlords mod was pretty funny.
I never played it, but I did play Haegemonia!
Ozo, the original Homeworld has far, far better atmosphere than Homeworld 2. It is absolutely heartbreaking when Kharak burns. Playing through Homeworld and Cataclysm also makes on realize how much Relic butchered the backstory when they made Homeworld 2.
I think the best part of homeworld was the campaign, the cut scenes, voice acting
The ending of Homeworld 1, and followed by the Credits, (Ladder), really made it feel Like I have finally beaten the game, and felt great after.
I never really gotten into the multiplayer games for homeworld. Campaign was great and I have replayed it a few times. (Hw->cata->Hw2 order)
The campaigns for these is a must play(it will keep you busy for a while). Maybe I will play it again right now.
Oh and of-course, the reason why this game beats campaigns in other rts games in my opinion, must be the fact that you can keep your fleet when you move onto the next mission!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO
I've bought HW2 some time ago, but was occupied with different games and work. I will try it when I have more time. It is not going anywhere .
@shadowt Galciv2 is indeed my type of game, much more than SotS. However in Galciv2 I didn't like the micromanagement of the planets so much. Also the economy system was tedious. I'm looking forward to Distant Words, which is to be released next week.
I have very mixed feelings about this game...on the one hand, it was kind of buggy, kind of slow, there were times when missions were impossible to complete, there's no real skirmish mode...
On the other hand...pretty explosions...sparkles...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
All in all, I did enjoy it, if you sped up the game between periods of downtime it could get really exciting.
