i know i did and still do!
dont get me wrong i love sins but i miss homewold 2 and cant get it to work on vista or with my 8800 card
did you play the homeworld games?
what did like about them?
do you wish sins had some homeworld features?
do you still play?
i liked homeworld, but more importantly it was very, very unique.
Sins isn't a space RTS, its an RTS in a space environment. The diference is that the 1st is Homeworld, the 2nd Sins.
HW2 was superb, sure they could have taken more from that game. Sins is a different game though, and not bad on its own. I made a big mod for HW2, and still play it on occasion.
I thought the Cataclysm add-on to HW1 was the best, was really atmospheric ... I can still hear the screams now!
I loved them both, but found HW2 nicer to play due to the UI improvements. I've heard that storywise it was a disaster, with people refering to the "Dustwars" design document.
Homeworld was a thing of beauty, ship designs, story and campaign, music, the first to have 3d movement (AFAIK). It was just great. Unfortunately, i got it so late that graphics-wise it was outdated, but i'm not graphics-(you-konow-what), even though i own Crysis
Sins is very good too, but not "homeworld" great. Sins has a backstory for each race, but it does nothing with them, since there is no campaign to drive the stories forward. It's up to you to "roleplay" the races.
BTW, now that relic has the Homeworld license back, there is a chance we might see Homeworld 3, there are even a few hints suggesting it could already be in deveploment: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=318681
Was absolutely in love with the games. The pace, the graphics, but for one of the only games ever I have to say the music/sound effects. The music fitted the setting and pace so perfectly I think it was amazing.
The sound effects of the radio comms and the chatter during combat etc was on another level also. Yeah Warcraft's ogres were funny to hear when you clicked and ordered them about but it only enhanced the feeling of playing a game. Homeworld's sound effects made you feel like you were commanding the fleet.
Compared to Sins I'd say Homeworld blitzes Sins on Sound effects and atmosphere. I was a little sad inside when not too long ago I tried to get HW2 running in Vista with little success, I think partly as I'm using a wide screen and the way Direct X has moved on.
Homeworld 2 with the complex mod is all I play nowadays.
That and GalCivII, but HW2 is something special, and the Complex mod makes it incredible.
Great concept, great story and art design (and music choices!), terrible control, and it fell prey (like most RTS's) to the "just spam units" variety of gameplay.
Homeworld saga is gaming world "Lord of the rings"
Lord of th Hyper cores more like... but still...
It got it all, Good story, good game play, good art (my favorite conept artis, Rob Cunningham made it after all) and good muisc!
There wont be games like HW and HW2 again.
Once in life time, man, just once...
Yes.
Homeworld 2 is definitely the easiest to play, but the story in the first Homeworld was magic. The Garden of Kadesh/Cathedral of Kadesh levels may well be my favourite of any game.
Edit: When I say easiest to play, I meant that as a compliment. They ironed out the UI a bit for Homeworld 2.
Relic are still making great games of course: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes really breathed life into the RTS genre. I have heard that the people responsible for Homeworld have left the company though, and I don't think they own the IP any more. Still, I would love to see them do a Battlefleet Gothic (Warhammer 40k space battles) game.
Homeworld was great. I still have HW1, HW2, and Cataclysm. I enjoyed the fuel aspect in the first one, you don't see too many games that use anything like that.
I have to agree on the story as well, with Cataclysm being a little below the other two. The story board narration was and still is original and very well done. Less is more I guess.
I haven't played them in a while, I can't get cataclysm to run at all, but I might try to reinstall HW1 this weekend. Thinking about it is giving me the itch.
Love Homeworld.
That is what got me into gaming, and started my clan.
Sometime If i ever get time, I may create a HW sins mod. (Someone already has, but it was never updated for 1.1, and failed to catch the essence of HW)
What excatly is the Complex mod? I'm a graphic's whore. Played Homeworld...(Yes song btw)Loved it ! In fact went out a bought a Riva TNT, because my Voodoo 2 was showing banding in the graphics.... but for some reason never got 2.
I do love both HW and HW2 but on a side note hee hee... THQ didnt deny the Homeworld 3 Rumor.... IF they make it dont screw it up... waiting though for more info to rise though probably 2009 they announce it.
i pray they dont ruin it
i mean imo c&c was ruined by EA
tibirium sun was amazing back in the day but tibirium wars was a pure letdown
and dont get me started on wat they have done to red alert!
it seems these days the graphix get better but the gameplay isnt important anymore
I love HW2. C&C Generals and HW 2 were the first two games I purchased for my computer when I bought it in 2004. That is, the first two games I purchased that were professionally done, and not through Real Games or something like that. HW2 had the graphics and sound effects that I craved at the time, and Generals had very entertaining game play. I spent a lot of sleepless nights with those two games. I still feel that the artwork for HW2 has yet to find its equal. The weapons effects...come on...who didn't get chills when the Hiigaran battlecruiser would fire its main weapon?
Complex is a mod for Homeworld 2 that turns it into something of a 4X. As well as a slew of new ships, it introduces a rank and honour points system that requires you to be of a high enough rank to advance the tech tree, massive amounts of researches, various ways to improve your economy, game years and capturable "megaliths". The newest version 7.X is in beta right now and adds things like planet management and attack formations. You can download it by signing up at the forum or wait until it releases publicly.
It's a pretty damn fun mod, though I haven't actually played it in a long while. Anyway, here's the website: http://www.homeworld2complex.com/index.htm
Homeworld 1 will always be THE classic. Hell we made SoA 1 from HW.
I didnt like HW2 as much. I thought the UI hindered the game more than helped it. Plus the story, campaign, and game seemed rushed.. in fact it was rushed. I still remember the rant the old relic PR guy had, about not bothering to put effort in a game only a 1000 fans would buy.
Ill take classic HW1 with HW2's graphics any day.
I love homeworld and am quite fond of Sins, but what I've found one game lacks the other excels in, at least in terms of what I want in a space RTS. I agree the combat environment in Homeworld kicks sins, especially with the movement along the height y-axis and radio chatter that sins lacks, but what I like about sins over Homeworld is the depth of research, economy and richness of space (i.e. planets, stars etc.) that I always yearned for while playing it. My only hope is that one day someone will combine the strengths of these two games. I truly believe the result would be the PERFECT space RTS.
Oh yes, I remember Homeworld. Garden of Kadesh, I have to agree on that one. Cataclysm had some great parts too.
But I still remember the voice of Fleet Command when the homeworld is burning.
About getting homeworld 2 to work - if you suffer extreme slowdown and graphical artifacts, but it otherwise works (that happened to me) there's one setting - don't remember which, vsync or something silly - that'll fix it.
Do they still sell it in stores, because I never knew about it way back when so I don't own it. I don't feel like ordering it however...
Homeworld 3 sounds like a good idea though...agreed?
Hard to say. Homeworld 2's been spotted in platinum collections / bargain bins this year, at least, so it's worth a look. Relic HAS been making homeworld-3 like noises over at relicnews, but nothing official, nothing confirmed, and lots of wishful thinking.
Loved Catalcysm! Was the only expantion where two sides were actually different!
HW2 felt very... solid for lack of a better way to describe it. The model collition worked well, animations were extremely smoth and pretty, everything that couldav been cool was cool.
The biggest flaw of HW1, Cat, and HW2 is the TERRIBLE multiplayer. Other than the fact that finding games was hard at best, disconnects were a commonality. And Sierra did not patch the game fast enough causing bugs to just stay around and annoy you till you quit.
Cataclysm never resolved any imbalances in the multiplayer... (mothership could not be repaired quickly for beast, humans had the big cannon so if they got it game is pretty much over)... So the one or two games you actually got to play (due to disconnects) didnt really work out so well since you usually didn't have enough players to practice with.
Also there was no official mod toolkit, that is usually a big downfall of games. Developers cannot think up as much cool things as some gamers with a passion would (for free). DOTA is a perfect example.
Complex mod is basically HW2 with a crapload of awesome goodies tacked on...including mining bases, salvagable debris, more ships, and lots and lots of gimmicky but fun gameplay mechanics (apparently they're adding planet management...I'm kind of skeptical, but we'll see how that goes...)
Edit: Oh, and HW3 will be the best thing since molecular oxygen
if hw3 ever comes out they should make it a holiday
No. Couldn't stand it.
