I am looking to get into a good MMORPG. I have played many and obviously didn't like something about them.
Before I go any further,
WoW sucks, played it, don't mention it. I have also played FFXI, GW, SotNW (GE), Saga, and a bunch of F2Ps. I am currently trying Perfect World, yes I speak a little Mandarin, but the verdict is still out on it.
So my questions really is:
What do you recommend and WHY DO YOU LIKE IT?
thanks for all your help,
Evil
EVE is what I settled on. It has everything I want in an MMO.
Complexity is a bonus for me. The skill progression is unique and it is NOT fantasy.
I have been playing EVE for a month and purchased a year. I love it.
And yeah I've died a couple times in PVP as a noob and it doesn't really bother me much.
As for griefers, hell yeah. I want to grief the griefers, they don't bother me.
I am really sick of fantasy MMOs.
As for free MMOs I went through a bunch and couldn't find one I would devote time to.
Most seem to be Korean or Chinese and all copies of each other.
PLAY EVE ONLINE IT'S THE BEST MMOG!!!!!
Warpfire! It is awesome! I have been playing it for about two years now. It never gets old, it's free, it's got a good bunch of people playing it, and also, we need to spread the word! Warpfire is great!
Okay, so warpfire isn't exactly cutting-edge. It's 2d. So what. It's a fun game that you can play whenever, it's browser based, and it's fun just to explore around on.
Trust me, try it. And if you do, and you ever see an U.S.C. Archangel flying toward you, player name Eamon_Kallen, that'll be me. So don't shoot.
The website for warpfire doesn't have much info. Anything else you can tell us about it? It sounds alot like all those other sort of free browser games.
It kinda is. It's a simplistic game, which is good for something to just hang out and screw around on.
Basically, there's different universes. You transit between them using things called gates. You fly up to them, activate them, and emerge in another universe. Each universe has different types of ore to mine, along with different 'monsters'. The main currency in warpfire is credits, which are gained mostly from completeing quests and killing monsters. There's also thorium, which is a lot rarer and harder to get, but necessary for the bigger ships and shield generators.
In the game, you can purchase ships, ammo, weapons, and extras, both from the store, and from auctions. Sometimes auctions are better. For instance, i got an Archangel, usually a couple thousand thorium, for only 10,000 credits. (The exchange rate is 1 thorium to 100 credits.) Unfortunately, credits cannot be converted to thorium, only thorium to credits.
There are three major factions. Two of them, the USCand the Outer Worlders are bitter rivals. We should be after all those blasted pirates kill anyone. Grr. (I'm a USC guy, btw)
Heres a link to the forums, and to the Help section which gives a lot more detailed info. Try it! Trust me, it's fun.
CLICK
Got it loaded up and gonna try it on my lunch.
I played WoW... it's all right but at lvl 80, you have to choose beetween PVP or raiding... Raiding requires gear grind that i couldn't take (even if the game's easy as hell ATM) and WoW PVP just sucks... should it affect the world, like capturing capital cities, then i might play it still.
Quitting WoW kinda left a kind of void in my life... (until i get my 360 repaired and Halo Wars!)
So i too i'm looking for a new MMO. EVE is my first pick (and more or less only one)... but i need to know how long does one have to play to start PVP with chances to win... even against older player. If this takes 2+ months, i won't even bother with the trial. And second thing, is there any good guide for a new, really new player... basic guide that is. I tried looking the forums and some other places but i found just some where this poster talked about skills, how long it takes to train them and about non-visible decimals. That was usefull /sarcasm.
If a Wheel of Time MMO just existed... a good one with unique spell systems and all. Hmmpfh. Need to become a developer myself in future maybe... There is WoTMUD but... it has some 50 at time at most mostly, meaning it's pretty dead world, and it's a MUD, not MMORPG. I want to see the Randland in 3d graphics, with MUD i just have to imagine the places myself... imagining them while reading is not problem.. while playing yes http://www.wotmud.org/ Here's the link to it.
just an FYI...you're link http://www.wotmud.org/ just takes you right back to this thread.
If you liked WoW, you should try Warhammer Online. A lot more PvP and RvR. In this game, once you get to level 40 and have an open party large enough to sack a capotal city...it gets really fun. As it is, I am level 25 and have sacked a keep a few times and even defended a keep, both with a group of people.
While attacking a keep, you can build a battering ram to bust down the door, etc. and while defending you can pour boiling pitch out of a caildron on top of the keep door and set the attackers on fire. It is the sweetest thing.
You should really check it out...plus the graphics are better than WoW.
Sorry about the link... not used to this forums hotlink system.
Warhammer doesn't interest me a bit. It's EA's.... Oh it has some cool ideas... but doesn't interest me. Warhammer... meh.EDITit's too similar to WoW really. 2 sides, equal amount of races and classes and them being equal too...
Graphics.. couldn't care less (no graphics at all is different like with MUDs). Besides WoW has good graphics (IMO), with unique(ish) style, doesn't demand too much from laptop.
And now the WoTMud link, working one this time hopefully.http://www.wotmud.org/
EDIT Yeah, new link works.
Hello EvilRon! Think you and I are about in the same stage. Made it about halfway through Wrath of the Lich King before "been there done that" boredom set in. GW, yeah, "been there done that" too. Both WoW and GW are great games, but I've just played them way too much.
Eve Online, I played that for about six months maybe a year and a half, maybe two years ago. If you have never played, it is worth the two week trial. It is something different, for sure. If you happen to eventually get into a good corporation (rare), Eve can be a lot of fun. If you don't, then the game gets old fast. It will eventually get old anyway. The quests are the worst of WoW for the most part. Spend twenty or thirty minutes flying to deliver something. Spend way too much time just traveling. Instances are fun with a group, tedious otherwise. Combat mostly consists of clicking targets on a spreadsheet. Maneuvering controls are terrible. The "talents" you learn on a time basis, and the timer runs even when you are offline. But some of those talents take two weeks, a month, even longer to learn. Feels like a sucker trap, and is. Think of it as a first person Sins that is a lot more trouble and expense to play.
MMORPG, been there done that. All MMOs with PvP tend to eventually get nerfed to death for PvP it seems.
My own solution has been to start playing mostly offline games. Lots of those. Some of the old games are still pretty good. Look for the jewel case games in a store, they are mostly "gold" editions. You will not need a patch. Just something that sounds vaguely interesting. They sell for $10 max, often a twofer deal and you pay $5 to $7 a game. Some of the games that got terrible reviews actually turn out to be a lot of fun for a week or two.
I would say EVE is not a game for anyone wanting a 'quick fix'. It is complex, and absorbing.
It is not WoW. And missioning is not the central aspect of EVE. EVE is more a player run game, missioning is just to help newbs. The corp I am in is in 0.0 already and we are having a blast here. And it was the first corp i joined.
The game is harder than other MMOs and I am glad it is. Keeps the douche-bags out.
Ive played a few mmos over the years uo, silkroad, age of conan, war, ryzom, entropia, guildwars. And played Eve with 30 days trial . Also tried and trialed loads of f2p and pay2p ones, but none captured my fancy for more then a week so i wont mention them at all.
From all mentioned above UO stands out before trammel introduction, unfortunately it went downhill from there, nuff said.
Saga of Ryzom (setting: mix between fantasy and scifi) an extremely good concept, a truly alive world (animals migrate with the weather and seasons, dig spots change. Crafting and digging(gathering) is one of the best ive encountered. Used to have one of the best comunitites around. Unfortunately due to bad advertising, and not sufficient development, it had to shut down servers twice and changed owners 3 times. New owner took over late 2008 but so far no sign of any development of the game (bug fixes, tweaks or anything at all) So ive susspended it untill there is something going towards new content or tweaks. If you are a new player id recomend trying it since there is alot to it. Graphics are pretty decent as well, concidering it was released just before wow did.
Entropia (setting: sci fi) is a fun and quite a good game, but due to the real money economy it is a huge money sink, this is also quite an atraction thought. The community is very mature, but due to the nature of real money involved there are Scammers (yeah with a capital "S") . Still its a free to try game and if you dont want to deposit any money you dont have to, but fun would be reduced 20% vs 80% grinding. Still worth a try since you dont have to pay a penny to try it.
silkroad=grind
AoC=broken/small/overhyped
WAR=fun untill you hit higher lvls.
Guildwars.....im not sure if i want to call it an mmo per se, more of a small groups coop pve, and some interesting battlerounds pvp, but it is quite fun.
Eve....was actually fairly fun but after trial run out i didnt feel the urge to subscribe, just not my cup of tea.
At the moment im wating for Darkfall and im actually surprised noone mentioned it here, since it is being developed by an indie developer. Game was supposed to be released on the 22/01/09 but got delayed, as mmo usually do just before the release, untill 25/02/09. The setting is fantasy, but at the moment its the only one that promisses a very unique gameplay experience. I wont go into details just check out their forums and website. Suffice it to say a lot of eve and old uo players are waiting for this game.
Also before anyone starts a flame war saying Darkfall is vaporware....yes it is in development from 2003, but everyone has their own opinions. Just google betaleaks for the game that is all.
Oh and just a small disclaimer, above opinions are just that. Opinions that are very biased and very subjective, if you disagree it is your right, but thats how i experienced abovementioned games. Hopefully this post will help people who are looking for slightly different mmo experience then wow clones.
GW is the only online game that ive ever been interested in. Was a whole heap of fun for a very long time. But u say uve played it...
AS I have found a game maybe this thread can now be constructed to help others looking.
And let's try not to flame MMOs in general. If you aren't interested, why are you looking?
That Darkfall looks good... if it keeps it's promises, it will be very good.
It's gonna be heavily PVP game though... but then EVE is too.. EVE has (as far as i understan) certain sort of roleplaying involded too but i fear this Darkfall doesn't have or just degenrates pure PVP game like BF42/2/2142. RPing was something that might have saved WoW for me but since only 10% of RP server populations actually RP within the Warcraft world and are not vampires etc., it's a lost cause.
Doesn't look too bad but neither does it look graphically demanding game. *mental note to remember to try trial*
I ask again but how long does it take to "get in" to real game, PVP, in EVE? Just weeks or longer?
EDIT Indeed Darkfall looks very good and apparently it's keeping it's promises. Definite try for me. And PVP is not a problem... I do like PVP as long as it's not WoW PVP
Glad your gonna try it out Spydyr. It's the perfect game to play off your off time or on lunch breaks.
All hail the United Star Corps!
Just play Diablo II online until Diablo III comes out. mah Diablo II
i got sick of D2 like 8 yrs ago lol. it is too simple for me
Age of Conan is a rather different MMORPG. While it has had a lot of bad publicity for different reasons, they are constantly improving upon it.
Send me a PM with your email and I can give you a free trial (buddy key). Just be aware that the client is a MASSIVE download.
(I'll hand out as many keys I can, I believe it's 5 or so, on a first-come, first-served basis. Will post a reply here if/when I run out)

'Nuff said. The only game that can really call itself an MMO. The king returns.
Have you tried RuneScape ? In all seriousness, it's actually rather enjoyable. In most other F2P MMOs, the quests consist wholly of "go here, kill these monsters, get a reward". RS actually has pretty entertaining quests with fair storylines, and some are pretty tough, puzzle-wize.
I'm with you, I'd love a WoT MMO. That said, check this out: http://www.dragonmount.com/News/?p=413 A WoT MMO is mentioned, being developed by the newly formed Red Eagle Entertainment, and distributed by EA. It's not even being developed yet, but you might want to keep up to date with the WoT news on Dragonmount.com. Maybe the MMO will happen.
The possible WoTMMO has 2 problems. First is that EA is distributor and will likely require making the game like WoW... Secondly i have a feeling it won't be good. Like channeling being replaced with spell system (come on, the system should be unique... not just click and the character casts) and male channelers are likely not to have any madness...
Runescape was good until new graphics IMO. I liked the drawed look of game, but the 3d graphics were bad and came with a bad UI. Quests in the game were absolutely great, especially the smuggling one... Otherwise the game was a bit plain.
Thanks for telling me about the game. I've been playing it for 2 weeks now, and its a ton of fun. The people are pretty nice as well (Red team, blues are mean and yellows are okay) Red is the best faction. A major update is supposed to come soon as well.
last chaos?
MMORPGs offer you the chance to repeat the same old tired mechanic for forty to a hundred levels or until you get sick of them. The only way to actually enjoy them is to put your brain in neutral and try not to think about why you're playing.
