I am looking to get into a good MMORPG. I have played many and obviously didn't like something about them.
Before I go any further,
WoW sucks, played it, don't mention it. I have also played FFXI, GW, SotNW (GE), Saga, and a bunch of F2Ps. I am currently trying Perfect World, yes I speak a little Mandarin, but the verdict is still out on it.
So my questions really is:
What do you recommend and WHY DO YOU LIKE IT?
thanks for all your help,
Evil
This doesn't bother me at all.
I'm starting to feel like, what's the point of playing a game if you have nothing to "really" lose. Plus in EVE you can always get insurance for you "uber-ship" so even if it dies, it's no big loss.
Starquest, looks pretty graphically lacking, I at least want a pretty game.
And I've honestly decided I do not want a Fantasy based game, I am done with them.
WoW, honestly has no appeal to me. It's full of young kids; it's too cartoony; I hate its combat system, and its Fantasy. At least the one thing I can say for EVE is the demographics are mid to upper 20's. Probably due to the steep learning curve. Which, being mid to upper 20's I really enjoy.
If you guys want to keep posting Fantasy RPGs here, go ahead, as I'm sure other people reading this may be interested, but I won't be swayed.
I have 11 days before I have to activate for EVE. Anybody know of a showstopper that I just haven't found? I've been looking for months. I just kept coming back to the same game.
For me, the whole point of a game is really to get away from real life and its worries.
dingbat91: I saw your post in the StarQuest forums, thanks.
If you haven't tried any of them yet, I'd suggest Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, or EVE: Online they are radicly different, but both are great, and well worth their money.
DEAD!
In short, go back to the whinefest that is the Warhammer Alliance Forums.Sometimes it's a pity WAR doesn't have any official forums, so we could just keep all the douches in one place.
Edit: To the OP, if maturity is what you're looking for, EVE Online is your absolutely best bet. Just remember that while the average age is higher than most other MMOs, it's an extremely unforgiving game and it can take time getting into. You'll hear a lot less "HAHA KK LOL!" in chats, a lot less whining and griefing, and a lot more "real-life" backstabbing, thievery, and so on.
The first time you build a battlecruiser and spend one month mining to get the materials to make it and have it blown up shortly after making it can be very disheartning to anyone. Not that this happened to me but what did happen is I lost my battlecruiser on the test server because I thought it would be fun to explore some low security. I thought about how I would have felt if I lost it for real and I came to the conclusion that spending another 2-3 weeks to get it back would have sucked. Default insurance is 40% even if you never buy insurance so you can always cut your time almost by half of what it took to acrew the money or minerals to build such a thing. I mentioned the battlecrusier because its the next big step up from the cruisers and you go from oh 3 mil to 30 mil for the cost and most people cant afford them without spending a great deal of time getting isk. Its probably the biggest jump I have seen in ship classes vs cost.
Dont get me wrong Eve online is a fantastic MMO and the risks are amazing but only use what you can afford to loose. Dont think that people dont feel bad for loosing their very best ship since those are the kind you cant afford to loose . If you want to pvp find a good corp to back you up with ships and money for some good turf wars .
Starquest online is $9.99
evilron u can take a Trial for eve, 14 days free, just on the homepage eve-online.com
it's nice... w whole different leveling system,
I had a lot of fun playing EvE but left due to the chronic lack of roleplaying tools. I may even come back once they get ambulation and the ability to get out of your ship in.
That said, a couple of things to do if you do try out EvE:
-get rid of the PvP shakes - the best way to do that is to rig up a fast frigate of choice (Tech I), go to Arsehole Land (0.0 sec space) and play Dodge with the pirates and anyone who wants to shoot you there, which is pretty much everyone. Lots of fun, you get to die a lot but if you keep your clone up to date and your ship cheap but relatively quick, you get used to it. And getting used to dying in EvE is step numero uno if you want to blow up people later on in the game.
-get cozy with a good crew - EvE can be played solo, but if you want to have a whole new world opened up to you, get yourself in a good corporation that suits your gameplay style.
-don't piss off Minmatars
That's pretty much all the essential things you need to know about EvE!
Try Anarchy Online, older mmo, yes, but very fun and Sci-Fi. Basic game is F2P now, with extra content at a reasonable monthly fee.
If Warhammer 40,000 Online was out...I'd say that but, just to be pre-emptive.....40K ONLINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For the Greater Good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Atlantica online was mentioned, I haven't played it before but i see lots of adds for it. They have a thing going where if you play it and get to level 50 (Not sure how hard that is) and descide you don't like it they will give you 50 Dollars for your character. My freind did it and it worked out well, no hassle.
if you want non-fantasy sci-fi games, look up the f2p game of ace online, its pretty good, only, its one of those item mall games. its like a fighterplane game in about 2000 yrs....
I wish Stardock would make an MMO based on GalCiv, not this stupid "society" thing, which is going to be yet another unneeded fantasy MMO.
EVE is very fun, but it's hard to make progress in a 14 day trial. Finding a corp that will help you out a lot and give you stuff is also tough. What really got me into EVE is how different is was. It's in space, the graphics are beautiful, the universe, and it's just plain immersive.
well, i took the plunge, as i joined a corp, they flushed my pockets with coin, and i subscribed. but feel free to keep the thread alive for others who might want ideas.
thanks everyone
What the heck? No one, not a single one mentioned Star Wars Galaxies, it has the best Space Simulation in ANY MMORPG...alone the space part is so great that i would pay the monthly fee for it alone. Its like you have 2 games, the usual ground based questing and than you can fly around, visit planets (walk on em) and lots more. The Community is going strong and the wohle game is pure fun.
And dont start with Eve Online, its just borring...all you do is select the target and click. In Star Wars Galaxy, you need to fly your ship and have to target manualy. It just plays like the old X-wing vs Tie Fighter games or Star Wars Alliance.
I love flying in a Y-Wing/B-Wing these are mutli players ship...some big ships need pilots/co-pilots/gunner and maintancer. A full gunboat needs atleast 8 players to operate at 100%.
I dont like twitch combat. Flight sims and the like bore me. Manual targeting? We don't even have that on current airplanes. We fire and forget
EVE for me
Well, I see we've addressed the good old PvP/PvE angle in here. However, there's also the time angle to consider. Some games allow you to get something done in a fairly short span, while others will demand several hours to do something. Take FFXI for example. FFXI was a time-heavy game when I played it- it took upwards of an hour to put a party together from scratch, and most tasks, once started, required several hours to complete. If you got called away in the middle of something, you wound up with nothing. It ultimately drove me out, because I just couldn't get sufficiently large time blocks to see things all the way through. This was compounded by not having the blocks I could play at the right times- I was shut out of endgame content because I could only play for several hours during the JP/NA deadzone, and major events were never scheduled during my available time. It's a shame, because aside from the time issues, I quite liked FFXI.
On the other hand, time-wise, there's games like Vendetta Online. VO contains very few tasks that demand hours of uninterrupted play. Even the longest missions usually won't take over an hour. Most long-term goals have incremental progression, so you can play a little here and a little there and still be making progress, just far slower than someone who has more time to devote. I'd compare VO to being like a FPS game where you wind up with rewards that persist beyond the individual map. This makes VO a good choice for people like me, who can't get the large time blocks other MMOs require.
Don't mention the... SWG. What you have today is not SWG, it's a WoW clone with a Star Wars skin. Yes, at one time SWG was *the* best MMORPG out there, with unique character customization, expansive worlds, player driven economy (I still remember playing a Trando hunter and fulfilling crafter orders for high quality skins) and numerous roleplaying tools.
Then came the NGE and threw all that through the window.
SWG RIP.
When they add ambulation, EvE Online will be the king of MMO's. If they ever add avatar combat and planet landing, it will actually become probably the best Sci-Fi game of all times. The latter is unlikely though.
But then, there is always Infinity...
What? how do you know its going to be fantasy? the name "society" sounds rather generic to me.
And honestly, a game full of griefers and such doesnt look very mature to me. In EVE there seem to be too many people who just get cockie when blowing things up. Sp the pvp is mostly rahter pointless.
Wait a minute, you mean like spamming only LRM frigs and nothing more? Making a game last 30 min instead of 4-8 hrs like it was intended? Stripping a game of its intended mechanics and making just like any other RTS?
Last Stand will deal with that.
EvE has two faces. If you are unlucky, you get to see the ugly one first. But if you think of it as a sort of an all-pervasive roleplay experience, then its not that bad... see, EvE is just like Wild West in space. There are lots of decent folk and there are lots of people who'd kill you just for kicks. And to grab whatever survives your flaming wreck. If you approach the game expecting trouble (and with a handy understanding of how to mute an idiot spewing obscenities or trash over the chat) then the game is that much more enjoyable. Hell, if you take a few weeks to learn the ropes, I guarantee griefers won't be griefing *you* too much. I played EvE in a PvP roleplaying corp for nearly two years, on and off, and I've been gatecamped, blobbed or just plain pwned less than five times.
Just think like a spacefaring captain would. Plan your voyage, use the star maps, know what's going on around you and in the system you are in and I guarantee you won't be cashing in those insurance policies too often.
That said, one thing I don't like about EvE is how difficult it is to actually get some fun battles. You rarely, if ever, see 1on1 duels - as soon as someone starts losing they call in their pals. More often its a game of cat and mouse, with a twist that the roles can be switched pretty much instantly. You spend hours on end maneuvering with your fleet and listening to gang chat and then, if you are lucky, you get some five to ten minutes of action. If you are even luckier, you get to win.
So I'd say its pretty realistic. But its a game and I'd like to see some fun battles more often... unfortunately, the high penatly for losing virtually ensures that fairness will not be featured in EvE PvP anytime soon. Its a two-edged sword... the risk makes PvPing fun... but it also makes it tedious at times.
Well. I've played a LOT of MMO's. And some genres I haven't touched at all. But if you want the slightly less typical MMO's:
1: Eve Online. Yes, it's mentioned allready, but I'm going for a complete list here. And EVE Online is both good, and different from any other MMO out there, which is a good thing. The game economy is amazing, and realistic enough you have 'stock market trading'. I had a good laugh the first time I noticed people was investing in minerals to manipulate prices, for instance. That picture earlier with its learning 'curve' being a wall of death was accurate though.
2: City of Heroes/Villains. Superheroes, minimal emphasis on economy / crafting, max emphasis on storyline, cool powers / abilities, and combat. Mainly instanced missions, Uniquely, your starting abilities never get outdated; old abilities improve, new abilities are specialized versions. Almost totally PvE, though, but each enemy type use different tactics, weapons, abilities - leads to you having to adapt a lot, which is fun. I keep returning to this game every once in a while simply because it IS unique. And good. But not something to keep playing for months and months without break. (Currently playing a villain). Most unique 'class': Villain Masterminds.

3: Istaria (formerly Horizons). Near death, I figure, and quite dated, but a somewhat unique MMORPG - one of the few games where you can actually play a dragon. We're not talking 'draconian' style dragon - basically a guy with scales -either but a huge, blot out the sky, raining fire and brimstone from above kind of dragon. Also, a very nice community, decent events.

4: Pirates of the Burning Sea. Also clearly different, very good naval combat system, it has ambitions of being an age-of-sail player's Eve online, I suspect; in that regard EvE has it beat in nearly every area EXCEPT that its actual ship combat is much better, and POTBS has an easier learning curve + better PvE. Which is not insignificant details.

There's plenty of others out there - honorary mention should go to Tabula Rasa (Currently on deathwatch, they're pulling the plug early next year - kind of sad, tried the trial earlier and it has evolved into a very nice game), Lineage 2, Auto Assault (R.I.P.), Earth and Beyond (R.I.P, long ago), EQ2, Matrix Online, SWG (Whoever's bright idea was it to change the entire system completely halfway through? It's one of the very, very few MMO's that gets WORSE over time instead of better! Every nice feature has gradually been removed! Now it's a balanced generic hell... some changes, yeah, they were necessary, but others? WTF...).
When I end up in empire space for a few days (usually waiting for another taskforce to get ready) I spend a little time doing lv4 missions, normally make about 20mil an hour, double that if we have a salvager/looter. Money is easy to make if there's a few of you.
One game I have my eye on is Armada Online. Armada was an old dreamcast game but two of the developers purchased the property outright and are now making an mmo out of it. Its quite fun but there is not much to do as of yet because the game is very much in alpha testing.
