I am looking to get into a good MMORPG. I have played many and obviously didn't like something about them.
Before I go any further,
WoW sucks, played it, don't mention it. I have also played FFXI, GW, SotNW (GE), Saga, and a bunch of F2Ps. I am currently trying Perfect World, yes I speak a little Mandarin, but the verdict is still out on it.
So my questions really is:
What do you recommend and WHY DO YOU LIKE IT?
thanks for all your help,
Evil
im trialing EVE and I do like it so far
WoW has potential to be an awesome game but it shoots itself in the foot with expansions that you have to pay extra for as well as your subscription, any new content is for the maxed out lvl players and the econamy in the game is pretty dam poor, and dont get me started on the combat engine. the graphics are defo overdue for a MAJOR overhaul.
what i liked about EVE is that a week old player can play important roles in fights and wont just die instantly at the first sign of an older player, there is of course the "Grind" aspect of games like wow that i REALLY do hate, the only grinding in EVE is for either cash that can be gained in so many ways other than combat that i am not going to start listing them and of course standing grinding witch has great rewards
As far as Space Based MMO's go, EvE is certainly top dog at the moment. The amount of players, lack of sharding, consistent economy, griefers and PvP'rs alike keep it going strong, though that doesn't stop people from calling the game dead every other week.
Other Space Based MMO's: Vendetta Online (http://www.vendetta-online.com/) that's joystick based, but lacking in content as it's being developed by 3 people. $10 a month, free trial, fun for a little bit, but I got bored with the lack of content.
There's another in development, Jumpgate Evolution (http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/). It's currently looking for Beta testers last I checked the website.
Hope this helps, there are so few out sadly.
EDIT: Vendetta online is currently running a free 30 days + the trial. The keys are here http://www.mmorpg.com/giveaways.cfm?offer=31&bhcp=1
If you do not like WOW then present MMOs wont be more than glorified chat and roleplaying clients to you. You may like EVE if you are a PVP fanatic but it has too many weak points to be recommended for anyone else.
This pretty much sums up the situation with MMOs atm. Every game may have its unique features but in the core only the grind and pvp makes the difference between this and IRC. And you dont need MMOs for pvp.
Thanks for the great info Don't get me wrong on EVE, I don't think it's a "bad" game at all, and I hope it lasts a good, long time. It just wasnt for me after a while
Infinity: the Quest for Earth
Isn't that still going to be in development for quite a while? Infinity, that is.
(If it's coming out sooner then I think then sweet, as it does look like it has potential)
Get into Eve Online its fun! Join Faction war to start... or jump into corperations. Many choices to choose from.
I played EVE a lot but don't enjoy destroying other people's stuff so the PvP side of it was totally uninteresting.
Which basically rules EVE out for me in the long term, because as a PvE game it's probably one of the worst out there, with wafer-thin plot, boring and repetitive content that lacks surprises and lacks challenge. CCP claim to be big on risk vs. reward but they seem incapable of creating it themselves and rely on players (griefers really) to make anything challenging. If you dont think you'll enjoy blowing up other people's hard-earned ships, I'd give EVE a complete miss.
The only medieval fantasy MMO I'd recommend these days is Vanguard, Saga of Heroes. (link) Made by some of the original Everquest guys, it's very similar to WoW but takes itself more seriously, is actually challenging and the graphics have a "realistic" feel rather than "cartoon". Play the free trial, it's well worth a look.
The max level for trial accounts is level 20 >.>
Infinity is everything I wanted Eve to be so I just wanted to spread the word. It's an independent game with about 8 people on the team plus 100's of volunteer work. It's pretty slow going though because of funding and commitments. There is a single player version out right now that only focuses on combat. Kind of a beta test you might say.
I wouldn't expect a full game release until late 2009, and that would probably be a beta haha.
It looks really good though. Much as I imagined eve should have been.
I you are looking to play a different kind of MMO, aka turn based MMO, I high recommend Atlantica Online. It plays in the vien of older final fantasy games and you can hire up to 9 mercenaries to be in your party. Right now the game is free 2 play but dont let that deter you. Right now at mmorpg.com it is the 2nd highest rated game out of 100's of MMO's out there. I enjoy it because it is different than everything out there. Give it a try.
I recommend silkroad online its a fun game. It is a little complicated to get a good charecter so find a good giude and follow that. Ive been trying to find good mmorpgs and silkroad is the only game ive really liked and stuck with. Thier are some bots but they are finally trying to fix them and its gotten a lot better.
ACE ONLINE IS A f2p game thats not to bad, also rohan onine is pretty good, havent played either in a while but they were fine when i played em
Ah ok, nice 0.o
I have been playing EVE trial for a couple days now, and I have to say, I do like it. It's pretty, first off. There is tons to do, even though I have been doing nothing. I'm not a stickler for storied quests/mission (hence, I don't care SoaSE doesn't have a campaign, campaigns are gay). There seems to be a lot of promise; and people are very helpful thus far. I haven't even joined a Corp, yet, either.
The price is very reasonable, $100 for a full year. Can't get that in WoW or FFXI.
It runs great on my comp, w/ maxed out settings and no lag. I am not opposed to PVP, I just like to know what I'm getting from the start, you know.
I tried Vendetta, I don't like inside cockpit interfaces and/or twitch combat. I played Atlantica a while ago and it just wasn't for me. I think I have left "Fantasy" themed games for a while, they all feel the same. It's probably why I like Sins, Fallout 3, and EVE, right now.
Can anyone think of anything I might be missing?
If you have time to wait, id say try Age of Conan. Why wait? Well it was released bit "unfinished" so once siege and stuff are in you sould try it.
Eve would be a good mmo if it didn't take so long to get to where you want to go and with the severity of the penalties it's just all bad.
It's also not a very interactive game you can sit and forget with eve quite easily
I like WAR a lot, it's a pvp bassed mmorpg, but it has a good way to break the grades up by making people useless in area's lower ranked than them, and the expansiveness of the fighting is quite good, the seige system works really well in the game too. the pve aspect of the game regarding pq's is quite interesteing... the dungeons are a bit short for my liking about 1/2 an hour but it's still entertaining. The graphics are just nice as well.
edit: I know a lot of people out there find eve a goo dgame and more power too them, I just prefer to be doing something when i am playing a game. If you like it though have fun.
eve online is a brilliant mix, and unlike all other mmo's you are not stacked against in a way... if you go toe to toe against a tech2 battleship in your cruiser, dont expect to come out victorious, BUT if you go toe to toe with a t2 battleship in your frigate fitted with jammers scrammer and web, bring him to his knees and stop him from escaping while your friends turn up, then you win. The necessary skills required are few, and really only about a week of training, but dont make the mistake others do and think eve is a MSO (Massivley singleplayer online game) as it's not. during the week it takes you to develop the barebones skills required you should be making friends and joining a corp (though most decent corps dont allow trial accounts to join) there are plenty of newbie corps and newbie pvp corps. I've had a headache for a long time in that a friend of mine is scared of pvp:- he has one of the best rigs for pvp too, but he hides away in empire space and eve is not as fulfilling for him as it is me.
All in all it depends what you want, but in march next year(the 10th actually) we're getting tech 3.... totally customizable ships with a whole new set of skills, and that means that both old and new characters need to train them up thus further levelling the playing field.
ps: If anyone wants to join eve, try astrea rising as a starter corp, nothing to do with me but i've heard they're a great bunch.
Is EVE good at all? I've heard it's absolute anarchy.
Personally, I keep falling back to WoW. I don't know why people dislike it. I suppose it's understandable if people don't have enough money.
It all depends on your tastes. Some people like PvE, some people like PvP. Some people don't mind spending hours grinding, some people hate grinding.
Personally, I like PvE and I hate grinding. But that's just me. Tastes vary.
I agree. I'm a big Sci-Fi fan, and I'd like to see more games along the lines of Sci-Fi. EVE is nice, and I'll probably try it, but honestly it sounds a bit too PvP oriented and a bit anarchist for my taste.
if your interested in a sci-fi mmo then may i point out starquest online
http://www.castlethornsoftware.com/indexsqo.html
it's not graphics intensive, but it is great fun in a group, and the admins are always adding new gameplay features, definatly worth a shot if you want to disconnect yourself from the "standard" mmo's
What is the subscription fee? They show all kinds of info about a 30 day trial, but I'd like to know how much it costs after the trial is over, which seems to missing from their website.
