I am looking to get into a good MMORPG. I have played many and obviously didn't like something about them.
Before I go any further,
WoW sucks, played it, don't mention it. I have also played FFXI, GW, SotNW (GE), Saga, and a bunch of F2Ps. I am currently trying Perfect World, yes I speak a little Mandarin, but the verdict is still out on it.
So my questions really is:
What do you recommend and WHY DO YOU LIKE IT?
thanks for all your help,
Evil
Is EVE online good enough to pay for?
You might get farther if you start by saying what you think makes a GOOD MMORPG. All I can tell from this post is that you dislike everything.
sad thing is, i don't know. that's why i am asking what games other people like and why. i do dislike quite a bit of them out there
OK i should say, i've been playing MMO's since Ultima Online. yeah, long time ago. i like multiplayer a lot. i just get sick of people exploiting the games and making them not what they were intended to be, for starters. i also want a game i can play by myself and use the multiplayer part to augment the game, not be dependent on it. persistent worlds are sweet. i'll try to think of more aspects i like. lol
i have 60m sp in eve but.....
i quit because all the devs seem to care about is pvp and if you have a life/wife/gf/kids/job etc you dont have time for pvp in my experience
is that 60 months?
i'm not opposed to PVP but is it stacked against new players like so many MMOs are?
EVE is a cutthroat game. It's not built around fairness. If someone who has been playing for years catches you in a spot where they can kill you outside a safe area, they'll take it. It's also not like WoW, the death penalty is harsh in that you lose your ship.
It's really popular with certain hardcore types, but doesn't offer much to anybody else.
Hmm, the only really good MMORPG's I know are WoW and Tibia (www.tibia.com)
At first, Tibia might seem boring but once you've reached level 8 and are going to the mainland, things are becoming a lot more fun...or not, depending on how smart you are. Basically, there are very few safe places in the world of tibia and anyone can attack another player. They will become marked for a certain amount of time (based on how many you've killed before), when marked, anyone can attack you without getting marked. Spells need to be typed out (utevo lux! ), when your brightness on your computer is set to normal, you can't go into dark places without torches. The death penalty is HUGE, seriously, 10% of your total experience, your backpack and each piece of equipment has a chance to drop as well, so PKing has its rewards.
The best thing from Tibia is the thrill of playing the game, wherever you are, there's always a chance that a player goes off to kill you. You could train against low level creatures, the ones that most people aren't interested in or go to highly populated areas, where the chance of being pked is small as well. The most dangerous areas are the ones that allow people to grind experience but at the risk of being killed by the creatures that they're grinding, those areas are usually populated by PKers.
LotRO is a good game.
I don't play it anymore, simply don't have the time...
The story is mainly built about working in "fellowships," (cut them some slack they probably have a trademark on that term hehheh). However, most of the other quests are easily soloable. Crafting is easy to do alone without purchasing ingredients, but also isn't ridiculous. The instances are interesting, they have houses you can own and decorate to your heart's desire, and they include musical instruments to add a subtle layer of depth. overall, its a good game that i enjoy, if your into the whole Lord of the Rings thing.
Eve is not just good, it's absolutely fabulous. Of course it's not for everyone. PvP encompasses not only straight out warfare but trading, logistics, scouting, (forum) propaganda etc. I agree that warfare (the small scale sorties, not PoS blobbing!) is where this game shines, but there is plenty of other things to do, as well.
Eve is a great game but its very very nasty. The kind of things that would get you banned for life in any other game are glorified there.
IMO it has the best PvP system by a country mile, however it has no content to speak of. Definately different to the rest, might be worth a try.
The players have more influence over the course of the game than anywhere else I know of but bear in mind most people are evil given half a chance ^^
Have you played FFXI recently? Since the last expansion, the game has gone through a lot of changes, and it's not quite like it was once before. It's easier to Party and Level now, more rewarding for now players, and lots to do in the solo spectrum. It's very much a radically different game than it was at the start, and even a year ago for that matter.
EVE is the only game to play if you got above avarage IQ.
Also, EVE's learning curve is Brutal.
So brutal, it might cause you to lose a good night sleep.
See, this is the kind of thing that turns people off the EVE community. Liking the game has nothing to do with IQ. If you don't like pvp, there simply isn't a reason to play the game.
You can be a genius, and still fit that category.
Same can be said about Final Fantasy XI, they are in the exact same ball park. Just EVE is more PVP, and FFXI is more PVE - that's their big difference.
EVE does have some stuff for PvE-ers to do, but I won't deny the main focus of the game is PVP. If you're a semi-casual MMO player, it may actually not be that bad for you, PvE wise. You can work on standings with the multitude of NPC corporations by doing missions for them. Missions are semi-random, there are many templates for it to pick from, but eventually you do figure them all out. You get "loyalty points" for doing these, which you can use in the corporation market to buy fancy stuff. It's possible to do many relaxing things in EVE and still make good money and get stuff, if that's what floats your boat in an MMO. You can trade, mine, research, build, run missions without having to touch PvP. Of course, again, the game's central focus is PvP so in "safe" space you make considerably less money doing anything than in hostile space - CCP is big on the whole risk vs reward thing. If you're into PvP, alliance warfare can be pretty awesome when you get 100+ person fleets with lots of capitals duking it out. It used to be a blessing and a curse - fun, but laggy as all hell and in many big engagements nearly unplayable. It would be a coin toss who won - whoever's side managed to load in more people and shoot up the other side while it was stuck I hear it's gotten a lot better since the latest mini-expansion/patch (all of these are free, btw), but I haven't been playing it.
EVE is PVE, its just EVE's envoirment consist mainly from other players, making it PVP
actualy, EVE is Mad Max 2 in space.
FFXI has PVP, but you don't see me listing the details do you? I said EVE is more PVP, not all PVP. If i were to balance these games on a scale of PVP and PVE... EVE simply has more PVP content while FFXI has more PVE content. That's a fact, no need to give exact details.
EVE was made to be a PvP enviroment with empire space being there to let the new guys get a good start, and trust me there is alot of cash to be made in empire space as well as null sec but this is of course preparing you for the real big bad world that is null sec but there are loads of people who make tons of cash in game and dont even have gunnery skills.
as for the whole person whos played for years will beat a guy playing for only a month or so that is useualy never the case, as i said loads of people have never done PvP before and have played for years like the dedicated carebares ( no im not a carebare hater) in PvP there have been loads of people who have been killed by the newer younger players, being in a battleship or a capital for that matter doesnt mean that a guy in a much smaller ship has no chance actully its useualy the other way around in alot of cases as the larger guns cant hit smaller targets, it depends how you play the game you need to think about how your going to tackle the next problem and learn from your mistakes and find information on your own.
and now i shall leave you a quote from one of our good oll devs
"You're not supposed to feel like you're logging in to a happy, happy, fluffy, fluffy lala land filled with fun and adventures, thats what hello kitty online is for." - CCP Wrangler
Warhammer Online is pretty cool and its rather new in comparison to EVE or WoW. The game is focused around the war between Order (elves, dwarfs, human empire) and destruction (dark elves, greenskins and chaos).
You can level and gain gear by PvP and PvE, both exclusive or in a mix as you like. The gameplay allows to solo very well too. Grouping is pretty easy though (if a group or warband is public you can join them without needing an invite, this is the default). The lore is interesting too and it has some nice unique traits (public quests, the Tome of Knowledge...).
What I like especially is that team play and smart playing are rewarded. With a good duo or trio you can do content that is made for a full group or more. In comparison to Age of Conan where I could not reliable do group content that was gray con to me (i.e. I was level 40, the mobs were below or at level 30) and I had another level 40 with me. I get no xp for gray mobs, but they could still kill me cause like all group encounter mobs were "Elite" or "Boss" mobs. The "Champion" and "Hero" mobs in Warhammer are not as bad by a great margin.
Warhammer has some issues, afterall its really new and it was just patched to version 1.1a, but it certainly IS fun and casual friendly.
now if my Chosen was not the worst tank in the game since patch Id be a happy camper
I wouldn't suggesst Warhammer as the developers always mess up and make the game more favored for Order, leaving the Destruction community very much put off with the constant imbalances and mechanical flaws for Order Exploits.
What? This.... doesn't make any sense at all
WoW is like delicious fruit. It matures, then grows, then it ripens, then it rots. The first time you bite into a rotten apple will be the last time you bite into a rotten apple. But you will probably never bite into a ripe apple either.
my friend and I maxed out our chars in WoW in under the trial period. no challenge. too many tards play that game anyway
Honestly, i'm also looking for a good MMO, though I'm very tired of fantasy ones ( I go way back to UO as well), and I did EVE for a while, but the pace is just a bit slow (though I was in one major fleet battle between two waring corps, and that was pretty cool).
Right now, I'm looking to Star Trek Online as my last, great hope for MMO's But I'm also looking for something to hold me off until then. Are there any good space based MMO's out there besides EVE? Even low tech/graphics ones would be OK with me. I hate to say it, but I wish Earth and Beyond had survived, even if it was VERY flawed. At least it was a bit easier for a casual MMO'er to get into
Obviously you haven't played the game then and this is just your opinion. Put some good hours into the game and then say this same comment with any hint of honesty in it. I don't think that you can.
I got fed up with WoW PvP (which is one aspect that I love about MMO's) because higher level guys could just kill you and then wait for you to get back to your Char and then kill you again. A never-ending process that was stupid. In WAR, this can't happen. They have Tiers for each set of levels. ie levels 1-11 are tier 1, 12-21 are tier 2, etc. Now, you can only go into RvR or PvP areas that are within one tier of your current level. So a level 33 (or tier 3) player cannot go into a tier 1 area and just kill at random. As soon as that Char goes into the tier 1 area, he is turned into a chicken and gets killed rather easily. Also, once you die, you re-spawn back at the nearest camp and you don't have to chase down your body to re-spawn.
WAR plays a lot like WoW in some cases, but the graphics are a lot nicer and the play is alot smoother. Also, when you hit tier 2 and higher and you can start sieging Keeps and Towers...that is where the true genius in RvR comes into play. the other night, me and 7 others players (I knew none of them) formed a warband and sieged a keep. Once you kill all of the enemy soldiers, we had to build a battering ram to break down the door in order to get inside and kill the defenders. While we were breaking down the door, we were taking damage from boiling oil and filre being dropped on us from the walls of the keep.
On the other side, if you are defending the keep from attackers, you get to be the one dropping the burning oil, etc and the attackers. Overall, it is a great and fun game. AND THAT IS MY OPINION and I have put in a lot of game play hours into the game.
