Hi,
Sorry if this is a rant…hopefully not too much of one! Maybe somebody can help…hope so!
I have been deciding to buy Gal Civ 2 for a while now, after playing the demo, I decided to go ahead and buy it, never played a turn based game before, so looking forward to it. I noticed that the Ultimate edition was due out in a few days, so I waited and bought that – yay
I installed the game, no problems and then decided to grab the new 2.0 update as it adds lots to the game etc….the community seems very excited about it.
I want the best experience I can with my nice new shiny ultimate edition. I logged onto impulse and tried to update the game, I have Sins of Solar Empire and have updated it easily. The game was not listed under My Games, so figured I needed to register it first under impulse. So I typed my serial key in and selected game category, then clicked to choose game…..the list was blank?
After hours of re-installing impulse, the game, restarting computer etc etc…I have finally found out that the Ultimate edition can not be patched! It is not listed under supported games under the impulse game list.
I know people rant about impulse, but I don’t mind it and support from the community and the people who make Gal Civ and Sins is fantastic. Until now!
So that’s it then…nothing I can do, will have to stick with an out of date, unsupported version of a game and will have to spend money on Gal Civ 2 normal edition and buy all the expansions separately.
To be honest I doubt I will rush out and do this after they took my money for an unsupported game…it SHOULD be listed on the box! I wont play with an out to date version….anyhow 2.0 adds a lot!
I will find something else to take up my spare time. This may be a one of case….but I feel seriously let down!!!!!
Plus GC2EU also comes with the DL missions and cutscenes. Or so I have heard. I am currently trying to find it somewhere in the US so I can buy it. Gogamer told me they would have it back in stock in about a week. I am wondering what will happen first I find GC2EU to buy or GC2UE will get the 2.0 patch from impulse, so I can buy that version.
You have got to be joking me! Galciv2 UL wasn't registered to impulse BEFORE the release date. Here i am just spent 60 bucks to find I can't even play on the metaverse. what are you guys at stardock doing up there that made you miss the due date? (if I seem aggravated it's because I feel i've just been conned).
As this is a Kalypso release, they were, by the terms of the contract, supposed to handle updates themselves. In practice that has not happened so we're having to deal with it when we didn't expect to have to.
ah... sorry bout that, should have read more in-depth and THANK YOU for handling it . I'm just gonna send this onto their emails, ask them what the hell they are doing.

I would go for Ultimate Edition or it's impulse equivalent, purely because I would want everything I could get for my money. I would also get it from Impulse, though its a lot more money than the UE in the shops. Hmm, if I had known about this problem before purchase, would I have still bought it? Yes. Even though I have not played the game due to the problems with the patch, I still will when they are resolved.
In the future though I will not buy anything from Kalypso again. Kudos to Stardock for trying to resolve this.
I've never even heard of Kalypso up till now, but I say they are the most unprofessional group of lazy sods I've seen yet. Who the hell brings out a game without full inserting it into their data files and having and open link for registration? Poor stardock is taking the hit from ill informed newbies and having to sort this mess out coz their name is on the product.
Isn't Sins of a Solar Empire published by Kalypso? Stardock will suffer from your decision too.
The Impulse release of Sins is certainly not published by Kalypso.
And yes, I've heard of Kalypso before, made the mistake of buying from them before... Never again. Their support email (IF you can find it on the webpage) actually results in a return to sender 'recipient unknown'.
So i'm guessing that's why my angery letter didn't reach them. I've had no response.
EU patch is out a while ago. Unless UE makes more changes to DA/TA files, it shouldn't take that long to "copy" the required files for patching.

" Support is just going off the terms of the deal with Kalypso. Seems things are not working out as agreed upon initially. In any case, registration is linked with the availability of the game in Impulse. The serials are not invalid or anything like that, we just can't enable registration in Impulse until the game itself is put into Impulse. And that part is waiting on some localization issues being sorted out."
Looks like its more to do with getting the game on impulse than the patch it's self.Makes sense i guess, they never expected to do the support for the game, and the servers would need the orignal version to do patch checks against,to tell what version people have.
... Well at least the serials ARE valid. people there are just over thinking a very simple answer. Dispite What happens in the conference rooms, UL has to be support by impulse or both companies will be marked by potential customers in the future "don't buy from them, last game update they brought out wasn't supported". Not only that but this word will spread so I don't understand why they don't just support it and then discuss terms.
Customers are the ones who fill your wallets.
Couldn't agree more, I'm afraid. Even if somebody screwed up on the legal side of things, I'm pretty sure it wasn't the fault of the customers who bought this pack in good faith. At the end of the day it looks rather amatuerish, to be honest. Having said that, kudos to SD for trying to remedy the situation - regardless of whose fault it was.
Perhaps in future, though, they might want to hire a lawyer who can actually read .
I wait patiently, but there is a limit to that.
you and me both hallben.
Stardock should handle Galciv3 when it comes out. their the only ones I really trust to do it correctly.
I don't fully agree guys.
remember that stardock is actually trying to put impulse forward and make it a concurrent of steam, they need to be trusted by companies
it's not by breaking deals that this will do them any good
on this one, but it will mean hiring people or a company for translations, unless they intend on making this english only...
Only Europe, China, Japan, (& Korea?) will require translations/localizations. The rest of the world play English games only. I've never heard of any games in Swahili/Hindi/Arab/Southeast Asian languages.
"Only Europe". Which ideally means something like a dozen different translations (German, French, Spanish, Italian, Turkish, Polish, Russian, ...) if you want to cover what is usually synchronised e.g. for movies.
Hey, I live in the USA and I'm interested in buying Galactic Civilizations with both expansions, and on Amazon.com I saw the "Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition" for $39.99 due out in early February. Will this have the problems everyone is complaining about? Will I be able to get the newest patch via Impulse?
"Ultimate Edition" with all the localizations is the one with the problems. "Ultimate Bundle Pack" is the US version. Impulse may have it but there probably is a price difference between the 2 versions.
The one on Amazon looks different than the one Kalypso publishes though.

Yes, we are now preparing to release a US/Canada GC2 Ultimate retail box. It will not have the issues that the kalypso versions have had since there won't be any localization to deal with.
GC2UL should now be available for registration and update in Impulse.
