One thing I thought would've been awesome in GalCiv2 is the ability to create a couple of fleets right from the main menu and watch them go at it. Something like Total War where you can create the battle of your choice. Since Elemental is putting at least a little more direct control of battles in the player's hands, I think it'd be especially cool to have some form of skirmish mode in it. That way, if you don't have the time to jump into your main game you could still play a few battles just for fun.
This isn't a bad idea at all.
Nothing like designing a whole new unit and wanting to see how it fares against different types of armies...
Or just watching a huge battle for pure entertainment.
I agree! Plus, it can't be that hard to implement... Especially considering Stardock has been bragging about how easy it is for them to make UIs with their system. I think this is a relatively simple addition that could go a long way.
I agree it has it's merit.
Good idea!
This is where I think some of that user-created units streamed through impulse would shine. I mean if you build a few new units, but don't have the time to create a whole race and such, you could throw it into a skirmish battle and BOOM! instant use from units. What more, it would help with battle balancing and such. No having to build through crazy (possibly custom) tech trees to test out anything. No anything else. Just plop in the units. You could have a point mechanic that devised a 'value' for the unit based on the stats and abilities the way magic item creation in MoM worked. So that way you could play a 10,000 point battle or something similar.
I was really only thinking about it as a spectator mode... but if you could create elaborate set-ups between two players that would be excellent, too. I guess it really depends on how tactical the battles end up... cuz then you could have some really good fun mixing and matching with a point total to see how effective certain formations and units are.
