I've come across this sentiment in a couple threads so I thought it might be time for a separate discussion. Does a fear of experienced players and/or pro players keep you from coming online?
My advice is to accept that you have to take your lumps and pay your dues in order to become experienced and also to look over the player records before a game is about to start and politely request that the teams be balanced and mention that you're new to the online game. In my experience if you say that you're new to the online game players will try to balance out the teams.
Also, you guys can play the game online as humans v. computer until you feel a little more comfortable playing online. You might even try to set up some human v. human games with other people who are willing to play human v. computer. You could also title games, "New Players Only".
Another thing to remember in a team game is that you personally don't need to be winning in order for your team to be winning and you don't have to be elite to help your team. Even if you lose, try to enjoy being as annoying and as big of a pain in the arse as you can--delaying the fall of your empire and distracting your team's opponents helps your team. So, even if you get beaten when you're first starting out--try to enjoy the challenge of being a pain in the butt--enjoy the game as a team game and enjoy doing what you can to help your team.
no, they are scared of Pedobear
Fear ? not really, losing can be instructive, I just dont have the time to dedicate to becoming decent at games anymore.
After playing a few years of MMO's and online games, I got turned off to the whole online thing by l33tz/trash talkers and just plain cheaters.
I guess I've gone from semi-hardcore to casual with time.
I can't speak for this game, since I have not played online. Games can last to long, and for some reason I was never really big into playing people in RTS games.
However, for a online game that I used to play on the xbox 360 for a long time I can comment. I played a team based online game all the time. There were a couple of so called top teams that we would not play. It was not worth playing them if some of their members where in the room. In that case it had nothing to do with skill so much is it had to do with a "lag shield". The main members were so laggy that they had been a immune to all attacks except short range. And even then half the time you could shoot them 3 or 4 times before it even registered.
Now in I did find it their lag was self induced. They would host the match then upload and download a few files at the same time to give them selfs that edge.
So for me when I see top ranked people I wonder how they got their.
Now on the other side their are those that you see that are just way better then you, and then I would not want to fight either. And of course those are very skilled but just can't deal with the fact they are loose to some one that is not as good. Now the other thing is I don't play 1 on 1 ever, I find it just to boring. With teams I am fine playing agaist a group of members far better then myself or the members on my team as long as my team knows each other. Otherwise I would want to see it split up a little. So you have at least one good guy on your team that can act as a leader or something.
Well thats my little rant.
MP sins pauses (and gives the host an option to drop the player - replaced by an AI) if the lag is too high. The game picks up again once all games have caught up. So that tactic cannot be used.
As for how they got so good - they have been playing since it came out 9 months ago, or longer if they were in the original beta... Plus they play online which is a far better teacher then SP vs the AI.
Remember that we WANT new players to come online and to get better as it gives us more of a challenge. I can beat the Unfair AI 1v1, so that is no fun. Humans are fun. Plus the fact you can chat to all players in the game (or just your team) means that some funny stuff happens or is said... It is so much more entertaining then the AI telling me to evacuate plant ABC...
Watching the replay of your online games is THE way to get better. My first game, I was "saving up" money for my first Cap ship (Noob with a capitol N) and trying to take out the best looking plantet first (Terran with 2 Kodiaks) with my dozen cobolts. I could not figure out how my opponent got so large/strong so fast. One watching of the replay caused a large dose of both blushing and note-taking. . .
Of course thats why I did say I can't speak for this game. I just can't sit infront of a computer and play a game for more then about an hour at a time. With some decent sized breaks inbetween. I guess thats whay keeps me from getting into this game online.
I do agree humans are so much better then AI. I have done this a couple of times on lan and the kind of things you see are different.
Great ideas, I love the battle damage one. It would be so cool to see all kinds of impact craters and laser marks on my Devastator after spearheading an assault on an enemy world. Healing might fix some of them but there will always be a few noticable ones that say "Vini Vidi Vici"
Then play small maps and get good at the rush. eh.
90% of players online would get raped by Hard AI .
seriously , theres nothing to be scared of going online. Its probably easier then offline.
And like I said , pro players , few and far between , are more scared of noobs.
Yep. Being stuck with the noobs when the enemy team somehow managed to get all the smurfs. *shudder*
I have owned and played this game since it was released, yet i have never played online
Yesterday started a game against a hard AI, and the situation is in stalemate, how am i supposed to deal with a fleet with 21 Illuminators, Iconuses and drone hosts? I'd imagine it would be only worse against humans. Besides, i like to turtle, no one likes turtles
I'm not allowed to play online but no i'm not afraid of
'pro' players
I agree, i think it would be very very cool!!
-T
I played a game last night with someone who has been playing online for a bit - I was screaming at him an hour and a half plus in to build a new fleet (he had lost his and wasn't helping me vs the 3 opposition who all came for a go at me - my other ally was on other side of the map rebuilding after the guy who was pounding on me came to try and kill my fleet).
His response was - no money. I was like WTF - you haven't expanded to a new planet or built anything, you MUST have uber resouces. I look at the roid and terran that he had colonised (only planets he held other then his capital). BOTH HAD -2.3 INCOME!!!!
Now we are not talking about someone with 1-2 games online - he has had quite a few (though not many wins/losses). And sure enough - he quit later into the game (even though we had won by that stage - 2 of the opponents had quit due to having their fleets halved before they ran away).
Moral of the story - I don't fear a noob, but I am wary of a newb - they could be a smurf, or they could be good from SP....
I'll think about playing online once Entrenchment comes out. As for now I've gotten a little rusty and am starting to get back into the game after a few months off.
I'm just worried about what everyone else is: people who don't play FAIR! Yes, I know it's a game and I shouldn't take it seriously, but is it any fun when after playing the game and going through a replay you realize there was no way you could have won anyway? Cheating can't actually be that much fun... I just don't get it I guess.
Am I afraid of experienced players? yes. Am I a noob? yes! Does that prevent me from showing up to play? NO!
I admit, I suck at rushing, or getting to use Returning Armada with the Vasari. I am a slow-paced player, but the point is to have fun, show what you got, and learn from your defeat. observe your opponent's tactics, see what you did wrong, and experiment with other tactics. Eventually, you will find a tactic that will appeal to your style of play.
I...AM...NOOOOOOOBBSSSAAAUUUCCCEEEEE!!!!!
How are people cheating??? I have yet to see anyone actually cheat in a game. Employ superior tactics/strategies yes. Cheat No.
I'm sure that the Devs would want to know about cheating so they can fix it....
Can't give you any examples as I haven't played mp, but stuff always comes up in games so I'm sure there's gotta' be something (if not done yet, to be done later).
Oh, and I'd call smurfing a form of cheating. Only if you're actually seeking out noobs of course.
So you ASSUME that because people can cheat in OTHER games, people are cheating in Sins, but cannot back it up. And you haven't even played MP? The only cheating is that I know occurs is when on Unfair - the AI gets a bonus to income etc... vs Hard. But most unfair settings for RTS does this - it allows them to build a larger army/fleet...
Exterm123 = POOR FORM = EPIC FAIL.
And is smurfing really cheating??? If I can beat the person regardless of the nick they are logged in with, how is that cheating???
This. Unlike some 'elite' players I found in game after game (mainly FPS/MMO) new players don't care about dieing, or loseing they care about having fun. Being forced to spend 10-15 hours to get to the point where you might be able to have fun is not worth it for the vast majority of people. Thats why the autojoin match-making services on console do so well (now if there was only a way to get rid of n00bs who sing on voice etc lol).
@ Hack78 - I've had exactly this happen, in SoaSE, and two days later the Devs closed the loophole with 1.11.
We should be thankful for responsive devs.
Exploits exist in every game, it's nice to have a (mostly) mature community that actually deals with these ones instead of using them.
Well i just created an ICO account, so you can expect to see me during the weekend, or you may not considering i live in GMT +2 timezone.

How are people cheating? I want to know so I can report it if I see it. (Though if someone rushes me with 200+ fully upgraded ships in the first 5 minutes of the game from a different system with the game on slow speed I will guess that they are cheating.)
Samurye.
There are a variety of reasons why I don't play online multiplayer.
The main one is that my internet sucks, and I don't want to be a burden to anyone else. I've tried online play with other games, and everytime I had to drop out because I was causing everyone else to lag. In Supreme Commander, my ping reached quintuple digits, which at the time I didn't even know was possible. I think it peaked at around 15,000.
Another reason that I don't play online is that I hate to lose. I know that you'll say that losing helps you learn how to be better, etc, etc, but admit it, losing sucks. I used to play soccer, and my team had about 5 seasons where we lost every single game. We tried to learn from our mistakes, learn from the better team, etc, but we still got crushed every game 9-0. Losing is just not fun, no matter how much you learn from it.
I also always turtle. It doesn't matter what the game is, or how well turtling actually works, I always do it. In Supreme Commander I turtled so much that you could throw 5 experimentals at me, and they would all be dead in 10 seconds. I've never been able to pull off those rushes that other players can, so I turtle instead. Of course turtling doesn't work very well with Sins, so I'd probably just hurt whatever team I'm on.
Finally, I love the giant, epic battles with capital ships/super units, etc (depending on the game). In the few SupCom games I managed to play online, I hated how it was just a race to see who could spam the most tech 1 stuff the fastest. I wanted the massive battles with multiple experimentals duking it out and nuclear missiles flying every where. From what I've heard about Sins multiplayer, most people only build one or two capitals and everything else is frigates. I love my capital ships, and I almost always have all 16.
Maybe when Entrenchment comes out and I get a better internet connection I'll give it a try, but until then I'm sticking with single player.
I'd like to clarify.
People are not really cheating.
A resource exploit existed in vanilla 1.1 which has since been removed. I played a 1.1 game and the replay revealed that one opposing team member was showing another how to perform the exploit, but the first guy then immediately told the second not to abuse it, and the game was played fairly to completion.
In a different community this would have been abused far more than it was, and the devs would have been far slower to correct it.
Various exploits have existed in a few iterations of Sins. What's nice is that people who know about them don't use them.
Peace
