Dear @all,
i am very disapointed and angry regarding this new policy of distributing patches ONLY via impulse!! In the future we need one installation per vendor in order to protect our privacy any more. Users with small internet uplinks are not in the focus of this Stardock anymore?
An angry customer.
Well, the fact is that Impulse works quite well for me, so i am quite ok with it. Nevertheless, i am a big fan of Rise of Nations and his Update button in the game menu : you just click on it, it checks if there is any update, download it and install it. Worked well. For me, it is the perfect system and i am not stupid : the reason Stardock didn't put this feature in the game is not a lack of skill : it's just because having to download impulse makes you more likely to buy other poructs from stardock, THQ and the other companies of Impulse. It's a commercial strategy packed in a user-friendly package.
Guys from Stardock are nice but the goal remains make you purchasing their products. For me, it's a fair deal, even if i would have prefered having the choice between downloading my updates the hard way and using impulse.
I'm a little late -- I just purchased Sins, and this was my experience with Impulse.
- Downloaded Impulse and installed it. I really didn't like that.
- .NET is required. I didn't like that.
- IE 7.0 is required. I didn't like that.
- I got everything installed and ran Impulse and it worked. I liked that.
So, there's good and not so good. Impulse did what it was supposed to do, but I also know that I can buy Corel Painter X for $378...as I discovered clicking around the Impulse interface. Clever idea. Convenient, nifty, quick...I might even use it some time. But, I didn't necessarily want to install that onto my PC just to download a patch for one game.
There's not much harm in it, but I'm not thrilled about it.
How about using the same method as Blizzard? Their torrent patch downloads seem to work pretty well.
I recently bought sins also and impulse has worked perfectly. At first I was worried about Impulse because I didn't think it was gonna be as good or stable as STEAM. But I have been very impressed with Impulse and my hats off to Stardock. It is smooth, streamlined, and fast. To be honest all these whiners about having to install IE7/.NET need to get a clue. Even if you don't use IE7 you still need it for security purposes. As for that paranoid dolittle guy, take a valium and chill. No one wants your information so if you want to play, suck it up use Impulse. If you can't get it to work then either your windows install is hosed somewhere or more likely you haven't downloaded everything needed. Impulse does not take a degree in physics to use, you couldn't ask for a more easy to use program. I applaud Stardock and hope they continue to improve the product.
I absolutely love impulse, for some games it can take a while to find patches, for some older ones its even impossible since noone uploads them anymore (Baldurs gate games), or I find a patch but cant download it anywhere, later realizing because it's only for some new version of the game that costs more (The Witcher).
With impulse, I just start the program, wait a few secs for it to search for patches, click a button and laugh a bit thinking about how easy it is compared to many games. Puts a huge smile on my face.
I have to admit though I worried abit about registering the game on it since I have the game on both my stationary and laptop, wondering if it would raise some issues. It doesn't seem to have though so I guess there is absolutely nothing to complain over
To be fair, Impulse is more than likely *not* the only thing that's going to require you to use .Net. Same goes for IE7 - there will be some sites that won't work through alternative browsers, components of your OS that can only be updated through an IE browser. These are just things that as Windows users...we really oughta have on our systems
Don't get me wrong...I don't use IEx. Firefox is my browser of choice. But every once in a while I have to go crawling back to IE to make something work, hehe.
Personally I like the idea of Impulse - it's given us legitimate users a distinct advantage over people with the cracked versions. We get updates hot off the press exclusively through Impulse. As it should be.
So you have to endure the one off download and install time of a couple of components; once it's done, it's done.
I personally have never had an issue with Impulse. It is quick, works nicely, and doesn't auto start every time I log on. I realize some people may have issues, but for the non-warez group who are just going on about DRM, get a grip. It isn't intrusive, and it lets Stardock insure that people have an incentive to still buy the game for SP. Downloading the patches isn't a problem. If you have good enough internet to come here, you have good enough internet to download the patches
I dont mind impulse at all. Bought my first game off steam last week (Defense Grid: The Awakening)...checked Impulse to see if I could buy it there, as my experience with Stardock and Sins has been great. Sadly, they didnt have it, so I used Steam.
After a week or so of Steam, I'm not unhappy that I bought it there, in fact the leaderboard functions for scores (filtered with my friends list) is a reason to buy it from Steam!
That said, Impulse is great, Stardock is great, Frogboy is great. And I'll continue to spend my money on products related to these 3 entities (and encourage my LAN group to do the same).
Keep up the good work! (and a huge HEH! @ the cranks! rofl...made for a great read over my coffee this morning!)

To the claiming coders that love to post all over...
Funny how those claiming to be developers are having issues with this. Being a developer myself, you bet your ass I would implment something like Impulse to protect my software and do other tasks. If it indeed effects any of my clients I would give them tech support, but if you think complaining about it on a forum would make me stop it your fooling only yourself. As far as being a developer, you would know why they did what they did (not just for the reason most people think Pirating) you would know why they have done it this way, but alas your a developer right? So you know that answer.
You know what the answer is yet? Here I will tell you...
Make it yourself!
Only read page 1. The only people who want to make sure there "privacy" is looked after are those who have something to hide
I can't actually get impulse to not have an error before it even loads, but im sure i will fix it, and i think its a great idea
I find Impulse to be extremely convenient and efficient. I like it a lot, it makes updating all stardock games quick and easy. Also, when I reformatted my HDD and needed to reinstall Sins, but couldn't put my hands on the CD easily; I simply logged into Impulse and redownloaded the entire game!
*Affects
I ABSOLUTELY agree with this statement. Although all you guys will deny it to your dying day, if you're on here whining about having to register your game and use Impulse to get updates, that means you stole the game.
my major concern with this is that i need impulse for this game i need steam for that game i need EA download manager for yet another game........
To be precise here - unlike Steam you do NOT need Impulse to run the game. You DO need Impulse to patch the game. This means if your internet is down, you don't have issues with activation authentication. Only being unable to patch (and play MP games). I know steam has an offline mode, but am talking about games that need to connect to the internet to even allow SP to be played
Hi everyone new user here say while you talking about Impulse I have a issue with it.
I get "there were one or more problems during the self-install procedure" every time I install it - on boot up of computer I get error saying impulse cannot be found and Sins on impulse keeps on tellin me it needs updating all the time - now the .exe says 1.1.6.0 so is the version number in Impulse supposed to reflect that as it says V1.0 - have no idea what the problem is here
Ian
First thing first, uninstall impulse and start from scratch. You've probably just got something hosed somewhere along the way. If it's still broked after you reinstall... then you've got an issue.
Reinstall the most current Impulse client from here: Impulse Client - Full
Yep get the same thing from that one also - except when I intall the one above I get a "Setsdaff" error and it shuts down (what ever that is :/ ) and then impulse continues to install and everything is the same as above post - what does not load is "F:\Program Files\Stardock\Impulse\Now\ImpulseNow.exe".
As you can see I use "F" as main drive not "C" - system is XP sp2 have IE7 and .net upto 3 all patchs on system as of week ago and use opera as main Browser - have and use steam with no problems.
SHouldn't be a problem with what drive you use...mine is I: for some reason.
lemme just get on board the "i love Impulse" train here.
its a great program. makes buying and managing my Stardock software a breeze and I like it alot. its fast, and smooth, and keeps me connected to a company that produces great software.
i don't like impulse. my gaming pc has no chance to go online so there is no way to update the game. i only created this account to try out impulse anywhere (http://anywhere.impulsedriven.com) because someone said in the forums it is possible to update the game with it. but when i logged in it said "Only full installations are available through this website ; to download incremental updates please use the Impulse client."great.
You don't have any security programs blocking registry changes and such do you?
no. so what?
i just said that i have no chance to connect to the internet with my gaming pc.
i bought the game half a year ago at a local store, it's version 1.05 and i think the latest patch is 1.16
EDIT: ah, i got it. i've registered my serial number at impulse and now i can download the full game with impulse anywhere and complete reinstall soase.
