Will someone explain the benefits of using Impulse, when clearly its a disservice to the people who use it? - especially those behind a bitchy firewall?
Smaller download sizes.
Quicker patching (using patchers makes for a lot of developer 'overhead' work, so more time can be spent patching, less time testing the stuff to install the patch).
Ease of use -- 99.9% of people have no troubles running Impulse, and so far most of the problems have been 'growing pains' that have quickly been ironed out.
Patch Control -- this is an SD benefit, this lets them more easily control who the patch gets to, preventing pirates from going anywhere.
Well that's pretty dumb. I really REALLY don't like auto-updates and prefer to have stand alone patches. Wasn't a big deal to simply login to the site to get the 1.05 update many months ago and was expecting the same for 1.1.
Definitely NOT too thrilled with having to use Impulse to get it. I'm not knocking Impulse. I'm just set in my old ways and prefer to have a manual update.
The manual updates were only available as Impulse was not ready for distribution, so they provided them as an alternative. It is in the manual that Impulse is how Sins is updated...
I have to say good job stardock. The download of 1.1 took only about a minute it was fast as hell. The game itself is even more amazing now to. The graphics look a lot better and so do the new meshes. The AI is a lot smarter than it used to be to which is nice. All in all keep it up Brad and Stardock good job. Looking forward to seeing entrenchemnt now.
Smaller patches are nice, but fairly inconsequential. And entirely incosequential when it takes so long to verify the patch before even beginning the download.
I have'nt the insight to really understand this claim, but I can't see the difference between impulse and a patcher client, or why it would require any less testing.
This is just a blatant lie, but I'll be kind enough to call it a bold exaggeration. Considering how many gamers are college students, and how many colleges block these sorts of clients I can make an honest extrapolation from this point alone and claim that it certainly isn't 99.9%, 95%, maybe not even in the 90 percentile range, though I couldn't give you a precise figure; whereas to justify such a precise percentage as 99.9 would be absurd. In any case, the large marjority of problems have been ironed out rather quickly, but I'm not referring to internal problems but the problem of using a client such as this.
I can accept the fourth point.
Impulse works fine through college firewalls. You're thinking of a different though very well known game download manager.
Anyway, this is about Sins v1.1. If you want to complain about a download manager, feel free to create a thread about it.

Simply put, I don't understand the details either But, in essance, where a patcher has to contain all the code and data to modify files to a new standard, Impulse can simply read which files you need and download the new ones for you. (As I said, I only barely understand it -- forgive me )
As far as it being a blatant lie... Nope. Exageration? Probably. But 99% is probably close to the truth. Now, as far as colleges go... I run impulse when I'm at school all the time, and have no trouble, so let me assure you college campus firewalls aren't a problem (in general). And its a statistical fact that people are more likely to show up and complain when things are going wrong, than to drop by to say 'thanks for eveyrthing going great!' From what I've heard, Sins has sold in the vicinity of a half million copies. Lets say 33% try to patch; that leaves us with (around) 150,000 people to work with. Lets assume 1% have trouble patching, that leaves us with 1,500 people with problems. If ten percent of those show up here to complain... we have 150 whiners. I imagine more than 33% try to patch -- I'd guess at near 75-80% -- and I'd actually bet that more than 10% of 'failures' show up here to complain. Add in the 'pirate whiners', and you get a lot more people than we're seeing here.

What the heck... Ive tried and retried to download the patch 4 times now. Every time it gets to 100% but says:
"Experiencing network difficulties (100.0%) - The operation has timed out"
Any help?
Edit: Remedy though crappy... uninstall and reinstall the game.

My 1.1 experience:
first my impulse was out of date. i went to the hp downloaded new version, installed it, but every time i got a some kind of serious error and impulse try to restarted and failed every time. deinstalled impulse. reinstalled. searching cd key. add registration. finally. first problem solved
after 5 fails it finally started to download with a lot of breaks. it took me 2 hours to retrieve the patch
surprisingly installation worked without problems
started the game at about 8 o´clock CET.... WOW 48 people online. amazing
opened a 2v2 and after some quality time of waiting i got a game
everything worked fine, until the fight started and we realized that the whole game ran out of sync at one point and everyone is playing his own game.

i am deeply surprised how you managed to do such a horrible job on a patch you worked so long on. and your patch distribution is a insolence
i buy several computer games every year, but this is the worst support i have ever seen. i mean, yeah you are nice people and stay in touch with the community, thats not what i mean with worst.

I am thinking maybe this is just a few people who are having problems and we are only really hearing from the people who are dissapointed. Impulse worked perfectly for me and I expect many others as well. Although it is not nice to have difficulty getting the patch lets not blow this out of proprortion and start accusing stardock of being a bad company as there are always going to be technical problems with PC games.
On one computer it was OK in my case, however my second computer had problems with Galactic civilisation II. I had to clear temporary file directory and Impulse worked fine again. There may be a problem after bad download being stored in the computer. I guess Impulse use the bad one from temp instead of the new attempt to download.

I'm not sure about the problem you are having. A group of friends and I all downloaded the 1.1 patch and played the game fine last night without any issues.
The problem he is talking about is the desync bug and it seems to be occuring more often in v1.1 than in v1.05. In v1.05, it would minidump if there was a desync. V1.1 let's you play for hours without knowing you were desynced 10 minutes into the game.
My experience was a little odd. I was catching hell from Impulse, as it wanted to update. After a reboot (something wanted to do something apparently) that went smooth, but then I kept getting an 'invalid key' error. Half an hour later, went to the registration page and somehow my key got cluster-<censored>ed. First half was right, second half I don't even know... changed it to what's in my case and it proceeded to download and install smoothly. Tried a quick solo game and everything seemed fine (after I reset my graphics preferences). I can tell some things look a little better, but I'm not entirely convinced the graphics are running smoother on my 3 and a half year old system. Still, extremely playable. Still fun.
The new UI stuff is great too. Haven't figgured out the auto-group ruleset that's supposed to be there, but takes time. So far, I say great job.
As it is required for this patch, I'm throwing my thoughts on Impulse in here... so feel free to skip the rest if you arn't interested in that.
As far as Impulse goes, I can't say I'm happy about it either. It's not a bad system, and certianly better than Ste@m (in my opinion... that thing crawls for me). Still, on principal I'm not pleased with having a whole extra program just to patch one thing. Expecially a program riddled with ads and demos and a bunch of social crap I'll never use. It's nice for some, but not so much for me. In a game with a launcher owned by basically the same company, I don't see why you couldn't input the relevant code of Impulse into the SINS launcher and have a nice, lightweight updater.
Also, while it's not a concern for most people, it's also one more thing I'd have to worry about playing nice with Wine if I decide I want to try and reboot back to Windows less.
If the stand-alone patchers are really all that bad... maybe a timed release might be a consideration. First on impulse, then the standalone redistributable later (kinda like MS does with the service packs and such). Hell, you can torrent those... who cares?
