A while ago this was mentioned about Elemental, this was way before it was officaly anouced however.
'You can zoom out and see a cloth map of the world - and these are randomly generated worlds that look as if someone painstakingly created it with a sophisticated map editor, which the game does have built-in, too - and then zoom all the way in to a leaf on an individual tree in a forest in one smooth loop, where the ground and trees look as good as you’d expect in a high-end first-person shooter. '
Now the curent scren shots don't show any where near this level of detail, is this a cut feature, and if so how close can you zoom now, and what will it look like when zoomed in very close? I am loving the current art style, so I was wondering what the LoD close up is now.
No problem
Don't know about that too. I'm used to chess battles from most board strategy games (except Total War I think), but I'm tranquil that E:WoM will have not only a tactical map but also cool battle animations (differently from Civ that has little). I've seem some relating E:WoM with TW.
Yeah it is degrees somehow. Just wanted to show something that is designely meant to be so, and more cute. Don't worry, I don't intend to convice you, just to share my vision regarding that.
Double post sorry.
Ok, now you're complaining that there are reindeer?! You DO know that reindeer have been around a lot longer than 'Santa's Reindeer,' right? And reindeer happen to look a lot like 'Santa's Reindeer' (or is it the other way around) because, well, "Santa's Reindeer" are reindeer! People even eat reindeer all the time in cold climates (I've even tried it - it's hard to tell what makes it bad, the meat or the cooking). What I find appalling is that there are trees! TREES! What kind of serious fantasy game has trees?! That's the stuff of fairy tales!
/Sarcasm... Really, now you're just being silly. I mean, if the reindeer had a bright red nose and was pulling a sleigh you'd have a point. But no. Seriously, there is nothing more fairy tale about reindeer than there is about horses, or fish, or ostriches. You are basically saying that because reindeer have been used in one prominent fairy tale type myth, that they can't be used in any other way? That's just being closed minded and unimaginative.
Edit: I was so overwhelmed by the ridiculousness of that statement that I completely forgot to write the rest of my post:
I really hope the devs will clear this matter up soon. For one, they haven't really explained what "continuos time turns" means, and at least one dev has remarked that they didn't intend to release that screenshot with the grid, because it was basically just a test and doesn't accurately represent what the battles will be like. I really hope that's true; they've said they want battles to include and show thousands of individual soldiers, and I don't see how that can be done if they stick with what's shown in that screenie.
I was being slightly sarcastic.
I thought it more of a cute common stag than a reindeer stag! But either way I thought you'd appriciate the reindeer comment.
Again my problems not with the stag being included more the style of the gfx.
Me too... those squares worry me.
I'm just going to stop by for a quickie without reading everything, I just saw this and felt a need to comment.
Keep up, dammit. The devs have commented that the battle-scene with the grid was released by accident, since it gives the wrong idea of the tactical battles. The tactical battles are in real-time (unfortuntely).
Don't eat that.
That doesn't look cute to me and seems pretty close up to me too.
We need more screenshots! You should make an "work in progress" screenshot section where you post "it may or may not look sorta like this.. maybe"-screenshots, it'd allow you to bombard us with screenshots of everything, without behind held hostage if something changes!
In conclusion: MOAR PIX!1!one
Edit: And bear calvary.
BTW, here is an equivalent screenshot of what GalCiv II looked like at this stage:
So it's definitely a bit early to judge the final look of the game. I don't think people understand yet that a lot of the art style is dependent on the player.
A player can make their city cutesy if they want or they can make it very gritty depending on what pieces they use to build their city.
Our overall look as watercolor style.
Here's a link to an image that gives you an idea of the look we're going for:

We will have more screenshots as the engine gets further. The initial screenshots aren't even lit yet.
This gives a pretty good idea of the look.

1) Awesome, some new artwork! (or at least artwork I seem to have missed)
2) That better be a lion I'm seeing on the head of that savage!
3) Triple-post, eeey..?
Sadly not, he cheated.
The hungry masses (me) wants more screenshots. Or the hungry masses changes to a hungry mob that storms the StarDock castle!
If you succeed in making the game look or feel at all like that image, I might dehydrate from all the drool... Likewise, if the units look as good in game as they do in the concept art...
The swede would know, wouldn't he .
I like the game play art (the map screen is excellent but these two shots here has me put off.
This is the excellent map: https://www.elementalgame.com/Screenshots/Empire_Cloth_City_1280.jpg

To me these look way to childish and well if not cute then cartoony, though RA3 is cartoony as well so I am rather torn. I want a game that looks fairly realistic yet at the same time I am willing to be flexible.

^This is OK still a little cartoony yet better than the first two linkis I posted,(Aside from that awesome map) though as I said I am willing to be flexible.
Personally I am hoping for graphics similar to Sins at the worst (I like Sins graphics BTW) And something like this at best.

^^Personaly thats the kind of feel I want in a fantasy game at least graphics wise. Your art style like the avatars and the the stuff frogboy posted are fine.
Also I would like to appologise for all my Lord of The Rings comparisions, but its the only fantasy I have been exposed too so this is all I can base what I think Elemental will be like.
Damn. If the game ends up looking even remotely close to anything like that, I'll piss myself with joy!
[Martok begins repeating mantra: "I will not have unrealistic expectations, I will not have unrealistic expectations, I will not have unrealistic expectations...."]
Personally I think an art style like this looks absolutely generic and very boring. Also the colours are very bland with flat textures and the lack of antialiasing makes edges look bad. Also it's hard to see individual things in it since everything kinda looks the same.
Elementals art direction in comparison has very vibrant colours, unique art style with it's water colour likeness, nice edges thanks to thick black outlines and makes things easy to spot.
All in all, I find Elementals art direction quite superiour.
I could respond but after 10+ posts but I wont....
But thanks for popping on and commenting. I suppose more improved screenshots would help convinve me otherwise!
If you can mirror this....even I'd be happy (well if it wasn't for the Robinhood style Ithilien Rangers I would /jk or am I)
I was about to threaten to slap you... but then I looked at the picture again and the rangers are a little funny looking. What's with the stocking hoods? Are they trying to disguise themselves as elephants?
It won't look like that. Think a blending of cell-shade with water color painting.
I'm very pleased with the art style Stardock is taking for the game. Much like the World of Warcraft vs. Everquest 2 art debate, taking highly stylized graphics over more realistic darker tones produces a more colorful, creative and complete visual environment that will withstand the test of time.
There's a time and place for everything.
What else did you expect of a proponent of bear cavalry... no taste.
The art direction in WoW is very nice, even after all those years, while games that came out at the same time and took a more "realistic" approach look very outdated now.
I absolutely love stylized colourful art in my games.
