OMG...this would be expensive to make. It would have tons of costumes, tons of makeup. Tons of exotic sets. Tons of special effects and ships blowing up. Tons of complicated action sequences that are expensive to shoot.
Even if all the actors were no namers, you would spend a heck of a lot of money on a movie like this....and I don't think most of the general public wants to pay to see an epic Klingon war movie. That said, it WOULD look pretty cool.
How many trekkies are there in the world - are there enough to support a movie no "normal" person would see???
There ARE enough if the movie has appeal to normal people. Nor sure if a Klingon war epic told in Klingon fits the bill. I can't even get some of my friends to watch foreign language movies that are excellent, like Pan's Labyrinth.
All I have to say after seeing that trailer is oh dear.
With the possible exception of Zachary Quinto the cast looks completely out of place. Most look far too young, and just look like a bunch of feckless "edgy" teenagers that have been handed the keys to the Federation flagship (as if that would happen).
The inclusion of an old American car just seems plain bizzare and yet another redundant American culture reference like those that littered Voyager.
I am a big fan of Star Trek, especially DS9, but having seen that trailer I fear the new film will turn out to be an enormous steaming bag of **** (insert the expletive of your choice here).
That drives me nuts too. I hate how in all Star Trek, whenever there's a pop culture reference from Earth it's always something from the 50's or earlier; movies, cars, books, music, etc. They act like nothing of quality was ever made past the mid-twentieth century.
I'm not that huge of a Trek guy. In fact, I've missed almost all of the movies with a cast beyond TOS. I thought there were references to Kirk holding on to a bunch of technology from the previous centuries because he had some romanticism to it? Granted, given the age, the car must have belonged to his Dad or someone else. I don't think it's terrible but I'm definitely middle-of-the-road.
Though seeing the Enterprise being built in the dry dock was freekin' awesome.
A-S
I think the rebooted effect of the Star Trek trailer is good for it. I'm not a Trekkie at ALL, in fact I avoid watching Star Trek at any cost, but I have to say, this trailer caught my eye. It wasn't campy or painful like Star Trek has always been, and it's less trippy everything actually makes me sort of want to see it.
It was much the same way with BSG. Original series sucked. Reboot was awesome. Maybe this Trekkie feared movie will actually make more people like Star Trek. Sure it's different, but that doesn't always make it bad, does it?
Looks shiny. And has pwetty colors.
I hope they have spent at least 1% of their CGI budget on the script quality control. Otherwise we're going to end up with another Revenge of the Sith set in the Star Trek universe. You know... moaning robots, Darth Frankesteins... come to think of it, Spock losing his cool is coming damn close to that... I hope he won't be screaming around like a little girl with spittle flying or something like that. About the only passable form of rage for a (Half)Vulcan I can imagine is a silent deadly one.
JJ is giving a little present for everyone. Trailer has new stuff http://downloads.paramount.com/mp/startrek/Trlr2_internet_480p.mov
I think you are a perfect example of the target audience of this new movie.
Non-trekkies.
Indeed, I am also curious to see the finished movie, hope it be good.
Maybe its that 7th year thing again - pon farr
or those darn flowers again!
I would of prefered a new cast in the future as well. Enterprise K or something with brand new technology and the likes. I think that maybe they are keeping that for a future tv series. (I can always hope)
Going back in the past and changing Canon I have nothing agaist it and I am a Dire fan of trek. In TOS canon was not followed during the series itself anyway so it's nto a big deal.
a few things do bother me. Having the flagship in the hands of cadets it very bizarre to say the least. I hope it,s explain in a very good way in the movie. The visuals are way nice. And please stop being bothered about the car in the begining. We still have things from the roman period here and it's been what 2000 years ago. Makes sense to have a few cars still on the road even if it is in the 23rd century.
I for one will be there on opening night. I would not miss it for anything.
PS Enterprise was a great series. You just have to keep an open mind. Season 3 and 4 were just grand. Having a glipse in the vulcan culture was awesome.
The Xindi saga was my favorite; great battles, and I loved the five-species concept.
It's just that in Enterprise -- the whole Universe seemed sooooo small and limited in distances that it was (to me) a sufficating limit.
I entirely agree with the Xindi saga year though - a long but extremely smart cliff-hanger type of show(s).
I suspect writers & producers had a LOT more to offer to the fans after season 4 but, as they say, some Paramount driven decisions had to be taken.
But if Brian Fuller has its way, we might get a new TV series - one day.
This movie looks good.
Exactly. If you squint your eyes a bit, it looks indistinguishable from a Revenge of the Sith trailer.
No it wasn't. Season 3 was just as bad as the rest of the show. They were obviously making up the Xindi arc as they went along, and it got more and more ridiculous as the season went on, which is saying a lot seeing as it started out with one giant plot hole. Season 4 is even more overrated. The constant TOS references are apparently intended to mask the fact that, once again, it's no better than the previous seasons.
