Why is WV like 51% Democrat? That's more than Delaware! Is this a bug?
If I remember correctly it is a state with alot of conservative Democrats and Democrats in name only.
No wrong, but understandable mistake. I'm heavily into politics and can name every president since 1900 and tell you about him. West Virginia has always been a democratic state. I liked Bush and he was the first Republican in a while to win West Virginia since Dwight Eisenhower if I am not mistaken which I could be because I'm going of pure electoral memeory here. Bush was able to get West Virginians who have always voted for democrats because of the economy to vote for a republican when he started to talk about abortion. This is why its listed as the most heavy democratic state after delawar or something.
I guess most west viriginians would be reverse blue dog democrats. They don't mind tax increases coupled with services, and are somewhat pro-union with all the coal mines and all but are strongly anti-abortion and religious.
Nixon and Reagan also won West Virginia once each when they won every state but one. The game is right that there are more registered Democrats than Republicans in West Virginia, but for presidential purposes, it has been trending strongly Republican this century. Obama won Virginia and North Carolina while losing West Virginia 56% to 43%, which says a lot. There are also more registered Democrats than Republicans in Kentucky, and a huge gap in favor of Democrats in Arkansas, but it's been a long time since a non-Southern Democrat had a chance in those states. Thus, registration can be misleading as an indication of where states lean in presidential elections.
