I am curious If the game was going to have a specific campain like GalCiv? I would assume it would since the game is planed to be a franchise. If so I was hoping stardock might give up some details about it . Will the campaign follow the story of a specific channeler/factions? What are some of the goals of the campain. It's also possible that since each channeler has his own specifc quest that hes on (acording to gamespot interview) that the normal random maps are going to be considered the campaign...or will there be a campaign specific map (A map that is Cannon to the story line)
This would make me happy. I think any game should only end when
A: All other players are dead OR
B: All other players accept the inevitability of your rule
So like the idea of ascention is great. But I don't think that shoul be an automatic win. Instead your channeler should become extremely powerful to the point where it's almost impossible to stand up to him. But this might be countered by completing the main quest that might say give you such a ridiculously powerful item that you could still fight him.
Since I have never seen anything like a "master quest" in any other game I've played, I guess it all depends on what, exactly, the quest is. If it's a rediculously powerful artifact, then I don't know, but if it's a sacred place that turns you into a god, I think that it might be a ltiile hard to keep the game running.
But wouldn't it be awesome if you really WERE turned into a god and you had near infinite mana, essence, and casting ability. And people would be forced to surrender unless there was some weakness. Like if your avatar was destroyed all your power would be lost and we could see an UBER epic battle as every othe empire bands together in a near futile attempt to take you down. Like in LotR when the allince of elves and men went up against sauron and won. I think it would be cooler that way.
Almost:
Although I do not like the idea of being able to lose after you win. Godhood should give you an option to end the game now, or tromp around and smite people for a while, but there should not be much risk of losing involved.
You're assuming that being a 'god' in this game means omnipotence which is not true in many mythologies...
While that is true, I for one would find it great to just cut loose after a long game and smash all of those bothersome opponents. Winning should be fun.
But at the same time, sometimes I just want to press the "You've won!" button and look at the game statistics when I win, and not have to go win again.
Also, the notion of all so-called victory conditions doing nothing but making it easier for you to win via conquest is not an enticing one. If winning the game gives you the option of continuing to play with superpowers, that would be nice. I could definitely have fun with that, but I am vehemently opposed to it as anything besides an 'extra', if you will.
Oh, by no means am I considering taking away the "you won" button. I just want the option of clicking a "keep going" button instead. Civ 4 did it, so I know it's possible. I do agree, though: a victory condition should actually make you win, as opposed to being an unnaturally strong bonus.
Indeed, something that I had always hoped they would add in GalCiv2 was an option to continue playing afte you've won (or lost ). I remember one game in particular. I was playing as the Yor in an epic war against all organics! When all of a sudden the Thalans won a technological victory (they were weak militarly and fairly average economically, but they had 3 stinking research reasources)...I really wish I could have continued to play, as that war was quite fun, and interesting (did I mention the epicness?)...though safe to say, I made sure in future game to make sure no one one a technological victory on me again!!!
Brad says 'yes,' more or less, at the top of dev journal from April, but the thread is mostly about modding, and Brad explicitly rules out scripted campaigns. I suspect that completing the Master Quest in sandbox mode might actually be 'the real campaign,' although there might be a separate set of campaign scenarios similar to what GC2 has.
I think that the 'real campaign' is going to actually be a real campaign - a series of events in a conflict between the Kingdom and the Empire (Humans and Fallen respectively). I think the Master Quest victory condition will be something else entirely. I mean, they've even released an official map of the world, which I presume would be the world in which the campaign occurs. It'd really be false advertising to say "this game will have a campaign" and then you get into it and realize what they meant by campaign was really just a method of achieving victory in sandbox mode.
Not to mention it'd mean that the Master Quest would be the same every time for it to make for a decent, let alone good, campaign.
Well there is definitely a map that is cannon to the story (one of the journal updates not too long ago)...so it seems odd that there wouldn't be a story for it to be cannon to . I agree that the "Master Quest" is not a campain, but rather an alternative victoy condition in sandbox mode...though it is possible that you will be following the Master Quest DURING the campain. Assuming they are seperate things, I think it would be cool if the various factions had random Master Quest's in sandbox mode (with a cannon one during the campain). Thought?
I'm not sure if there will be more than one master quest (although I hope there is), and I don't know how they will be assigned. My first guess is faction-specific, but I really don't know at this stage....
I wasn't being very clear. My speculation is based on GC2, which has a campaign composed of linked scenarios. Scenarios can do things like apply a saved map instead of a random map and require a specific victory condition. So I was imagining that the Elemental campaign is on that canon map and the only way to finish the campaign is to complete the Master Quest. Maybe. (Why is it so easy to assume someone is making a statement of certainty when all some of us are doing is thinking out loud and asking questions?)
On the "same every time" point, I don't see how that jibes with Brad explicitly ruling out scripted campaigns. Maybe we're having some (more) terminology confusion? Anyhow, like Scoutdog, I'm still hoping that the Master Quest is actually a set of quests unique for each faction. If 'the campaign' is driven by the Master Quest end-condition, that would make it effectively 12 campaigns, which sounds swell for replayability to me. (Not that I've ever tried to finish the GC2 campaigns--there's too little story in them for me and too many annoying scenario parameters.)
I completely agree... the random game generator and the map editor are two features which provide intense replay value.
