I want to set up an Elemental fan site and I'm looking for serious and committed community members to get involved. I'll cover all the setup costs and whatnot. So I wanted to know if anyone interested and what domain name do you guys would work best?
I signed up over at Modcraft and posted in the welcome thread. I'll be happy to do whatever I can to help!
EDIT: Have you heard back from CariElf or Stardock about using the .net address?
Drop me a note at bwardell@stardock.com and I'll get you guys assets and such for such a site.
Now we're talking. Spaaaartaaaaannnn!
Huzzah!
Awesome!
Awesome Sauce! I'll get an emai lto you soon - after I finish with my current set of clients. It should be in a few hours.
@Martok - sadly not yet. But with Frogboy here it would seem moot methinks.
ElementalTBS.com
ChannelersUnite.com
ChannelersUnion.com
ElementalChannelers.com
EWOMchannelers.com
Elementalsovereigns.com
postCataclysm.com
Warofmagic.com
some more random suggestions!
Warofmagic.com was the primary alt I was leaning towards if Frogboy said no on the .net name.
Btw. speaking of fansite:
Could you incorporate a wiki function in to it? (Or make a seperate wiki site for that.)
Imho wikis are the best and easiest way to collect and add information about a game from different and smaller contributors and somehow loosens the problem of larger sites to maintain a high amount of activity since you don't need that much constant staff for it.
Which Wiki do you think would be the more suitable Vandenburg ? I am creating a Elemental:WoM fansite and I could add a wiki to it. I am waiting for Frogboy answer about using original website design and once it is ok I will show you guys !
Well, I don't have that much experience with the wiki software themselves (I'm more of a contributor) but imho MediaWiki is a very good one. (Are there even others that work?)
The Diablo III Wiki from the Diii.Net people is imho a very good example of a wiki about a game not released yet.
Yep planned on it. The server package I pay for has all the bells and whistles software wise and the forum and media software I bought is the best commercial stuff on the market. I spare no reasonable expense for projects. I try to give the guys all the professional quality tool they need to develop stuff. The experience and learning opportunity is great resume action for them.
Update: well it seems that Cervomix has took the ball and ran with it. He has set up a pretty rocking knockoff site on the .info domain. To be frank I wish he would have waited for me to get official permission and coordinated things as well since I wanted to avoid us having more than one primary site so we would not divide the community talent and replicate services and efforts. Nonetheless it is a gigantic effort that he has worked on almost none stop for three days and it is worthy.
I also agree we need to have some sort of fan-based wiki (right on, VandenbUrg). I'd be willing to edit wiki articles (especially if the wiki is MediaWiki-style) with info as things develop and I imagine quite a few others would, too.
I still like the ideas listed above for domain names. ElementalGame.Info is rather bland (and I generally dislike .info domain names).
@Vandenburg - OMG! You karma just for that avatar! It is pure awesome sauce!
Yes she's awesome. She's the reason I want Pegasus Knights in the game. (Oh and Florina of course. Her over the top shyness and ability to land on peoples heads with her pagsus. )
Set yours up anyway. I'm sure his looks great (I haven't seen it tbh), but the difference is you came to the official forum community to help set it up and get people involved where as he's done it solo. So long as the site you create is equally as easy to use, and presented atleast as well, then a community is more likely to form around yours.
He may have already completed his fansite (in just three days) but you have the commitment of people in the official community who are willing to contribute to your site first. And at the end of the day, content rules all.
I'm still waiting for Frogboy to respond to my email regarding the domain name. My email was very long, I think I put him to sleep.
Anyway, it is not an issue of control from my perspective so I'm not looking at things from "us/them" perspective. So I don’t consider the effort and end product to be "mine", in my opinion it would be the communities.
What it boils down to in my opinion is intent. For me working on this is a way to help the formation of a community, via a process of creation, through which people could develop a sense of ownership and a feeling of belongingness. The results of which would provides a wanted and hopefully needed service in the future for the community, aimed at making it grow into a dynamic and vibrant self supporting group.
Additionally there is the issue of sites vanishing after a few months or even a year or so. This happened to me so, so many times over the years. This one fact is a major reason why I do this kind of stuff in the first place. This is so because I know what it feels like to put countless hours into helping something grow and develop and participating in many activities and often money, only to have disappear because someone looses interest, gets angry at someone or they are not making money off of the endeavor as they hoped.
With that said, granted no one here really knows me, but a couple do and I know SD trusts me and despite my relatively new member number I have been in greater SD community since Frogboy started the business. Hell I have my first SD game disk, entitled Entrepreneur, within arm's reach as I type this on my wall - don’t ask...
Short of my death the domains I setup are not going anywhere any time soon. Mainly because I usually prepay for them at least two years in advance and secondly, and more importantly I would make arrangements for SD or some community member to take them over in the event that for some unknown, logic defying reason, I would give up using the Internet and the PC (transfer of ownership was addressed in the email to Frogboy).
Furthermore, I don’t want anyone to take what I'm writing here to imply, in any way, that Cervomix is any less committed, reliable or responsible. Simply put I don’t him and you don’t know me. My comments are about my experiences only and my desire to help grow this community into a force of nature that could stand up to WoW (OK maybe not that big).
In defense of Cervomix, sometimes it takes a single monumental effort on the part of one person to create the cornerstone on which a community will be built.
Well Feet I set up this site in solo as you said because I like to work on website creation and not because I am asocial nor selfish, I wanted to create a barebone for the community for a game that really brings me great old memories. My wish is that community take control of the site, I already proposed to several people on this forum to be administrators of it and give me ideas about what would be needed. Spartan also told me that he really wanna directly help if he could have more free time on his hands.
I'm more a kind of shadow worker in all the projects i've been involved in, I do not usually post a lot to give my opinion since I don't think it is that important since we all have one, and that I probably won't say something smarter that haven't already been said before (+ my english sucks a bit as you can see).So I can understand I may look a bit like coming from a bear's cave but if you contact me on msn you will see that I am not like that.
I saw this thread but didn't comment a lot in it since I didn't want to "hijack" Spartan thread at start since he created it. I should have created another one but didn't want to create a feeling of competition or a "mine is bigger than yours"... since I'm sure my work and Spartan's work are complementary. Everyone who is interested by taking control of the website and forums set there can contact me. I do not want it to be "my" website but the community's website... Constructive criticism is also welcomed!
Ah well, I apologise for sticking my nose in and creating any tension. My bad. It wasn't my place to make a comment like that when I don't know either of you.
I'll leave it to you guys to sort out the fansites, but I'm sure the enthusiasm we all share for Elemental can be common ground.
I'll just say that as a modder I'll end up at the site with the best support for modders.
That includes resources, dedicated forums (even a couple of mod-specific forums for the biggest mods) plus players.
Also, if anyone wants a little help I'm not too shabby at website creation myself.
Well then by all means check out the community I set up for just that - modding. The domain is modcraft.net
Update: Still no response from Frogboy.
@Feet - no worries brother. I dont think anyone took your comments as an out-of-line thing.
Spartan: Brad's been a busy boy lately CC scott@stardock.com and pboyer@stardock.com to get what you need.
You mean frog.
Don't worry Feet, in fact it allowed us Spartan and me to write our feelings about it !
@Spartan: BTW buddy you prefer that I create a new thread about the .info community fan site or still continue to write in this thread ?
@Scott - No doubt - email away. I figured any reply would be a 2:00AM kind of thing or outsourced.
@Cervomix - I would prefer to wait for permission from SD before using the domain name to be honest, even if it is a lowly .info one. I would suggest for you pimp your work here in the interim. It is quite a good knockoff. I think the community will be please with it. Additionally I have no idea what Frogboy had in mind as far as what assets he plans to give us which is a major reason for waiting. For all I know he many want for us to have totally different image.
