Brad's posting and info on how 64-bit maps will be able to be huge is beneficial in two main ways:
1. Games can last and be as long as you'd like (duh). Talk about epic!
2. The even bigger benefit is this- better controls for empire management and tools for reducing grind/micromanagement.
I really believe that when the GalCiv2 devs added an enormous galaxy size later on in the game's life cycle, it uncovered some of the nagging flaws that were amplified on a massive scale. Mainly, the amount of micro-management required and the need for more automation/control on a global scale.
Can you think of other nice benefits to the really, really, really big maps?
Real geopolitical stuff with large varieties of cultures and blah blah blah!
I suppose what there could be is, large scale epic wars that only occur and effect only a region of the map. With these 64-bit maps, it can be like in LoTR, where Middle-Earth was having the fight of their lives, while most other regions of Arda were unaffected and could continue with their own affairs.
One problem with current maps is, eventually everything is filled out by all the factions and any conflict turns into a WW.
Elemental should be available in bundle with 4 gigs & 6 gigs rams packs.
Agreed, but if you are going to do 6 GB ram might as well make it 8 GB.
In terms of lengthening gameplay, I think decreasing the need of rush expanding (IE your empire's standing is based entirely on your military and land area), and new empires rising on their own throughout the world, whether through rebellions, or in a leader arising in unclaimed regions. Just a thought.
Next Intel socket 1336 offers triple channel ram possibility (3x1 gigs or 3x2 gigs). So it would be very likely to see 3 gig & 6 gigs in 2010 future PCs.
I thought it was triple channel for a total of 6 slots, so you could get up to the lofty heights of 12 GB... *drools*
depends on the motherboard really
some chip with 4 slots, most will probably chip with 6
by the way it's nice of stardock to think about the poor memory manufacturers
The major benefit for me?
I'll be able to craft the truely epic, ancestral home of The Pink Space Ponies. Only the 64-bit map will allow me to recreate this divine land with the scale and wonder it deserves!
For some day, the decendents of this great land will become legend amonst the Vasari, Advent and Trader Worlds!
I was hoping the Pink Space Ponies died with Sins of a Solar Empire. Guess not!
Now, if one of the included creatures in Elemental is a Pink Space Pony, I think I'll have to hurl. I'm just impressed there hasn't been a thread about it yet. (I've now just guaranteed there will be one soon)
In that case I would opt for 12 GB. It will be great for 64-bit native games and even better for large structural optimization problems
I don't think you have to worry about them in Elemental... at least not the official game. At worst there may be a user mod or something.
Sorry if my humor missed the mark there a bit.
Don't sweat, I give it three days until Ron makes them or maybe annatar. There will be pink space ponies, it's just up to us to block them.
OMG!!!
Please no! Let them die in peace in a galaxy far, far away!!
Not me. Puh-lease. I'll do the flying office buildings, though!
It's cool, eets has shown up on this forum, so he'll take care of them. I think I'll find some inspiration on the list of things Mr. Welch can no longer do in an RPG, so look out. Plus, this game deserves a new in joke.
Pink Ponies , bring um just give me enough room to enjoy the wasteland, and build up before you bring um . It will be like a Cotton Candy Autopsy when I am done!
Well, if you look at alienware.com, the aurora ALX CAN support up to 24 gig of rams
just some how need a good UI to help us deal with large maps .... CIV 5 fails since we can only zoom out so far.... Elemental we can see the whole world easy with no need for a minimap, though TBH i did get lost some times in Sins...
4gb ddr3 modules are fairly commonplace, so 6 of these modules would give you 24gb. if i could pay for the power bill i'd bring home a ibm x3850 x5 from our datacenter, 24 cores (48 threads) and 512gb of ram, but the 900watts at 230v while idling is a killer.
Whats a pink space pony?
