Please make the GalCiv2 update available either on Stardock Central or as a standalone download. I am unable to install Impulse into a Crossover Games bottle as it requires .NET, which cannot be run with Crossover.
I'm afraid that updates for all games will only be disributed through Impulse from here on out. Only Object Desktop components are now updated through Stardock Central. My apologies for the inconvenience.
Then can you give me another alternative so that I can update my copy? This is silly. I'd hate to have to resort to piracy to apply an update to a game I own.
I sorry but at this time Impulse is the only avenue for distribution of our games and the updates for them.Since this for Linux the best bet would have to be a VMWare to get around the .net issue instead of Wine or CrossOver. I'm hardly much of a Linux user so I'm not the best to ask in this instance, just trying to make a helpful suggestion. Since .net is picking up a great deal Impulse will be with several other programs that will require it. I am sorry for the trouble.
But, but, you *promised*!
This blows if this is how it's going to be. I don't want anything to do with Impulse.
WAIT WHAT? I have to DL friggin impulse (or update it, dunno if i have it)
And you promised it for SDC.. i can't see point using impulse when i only use SDC for updating and it works well, unlike Impulse which has still problems...
You really can't complain too much. Stardock has made it abundantly clear over the past several months that use of SDC was being phased out in favor of Impulse, with SDC eventually being scrapped entirely. Apparently, "eventually" is approaching faster than some of us would like :/
Damn, this means I finally have to get Impulse.
Here is a direct quote from the recent "Stardock Customer Report 2008":
2) Protecting its platform – Stardock develops for Windows. Period. It does not, nor does it plan to, support the Mac or Linux markets. Our focus is to help make the Windows platform as successful as possible. Stardock’s entertainment group may eventually make console games as well, but when it comes to application software, Windows is the platform.
I think that's pretty clear. It's your choice if you want to use other platforms and it's your responsibility to sort out any issues that choice causes.
Dual boot is another option for Linux users.
I went around the office for someone whom could answer the question directly but it was too close to closing time to catch them all. I have sent off an email asking for clarification just in case this update will be done through Stardock Central as well. If there is more information I can supply after I hear back I will post it right away.
WebReg & Clocknova,
I think for most of us who expected to see 2.0 on SDC today, it's not a Linux (or Mac with WinWhatever) thing. Some Impulse resistors still might not want .NET cluttering their boxes, others are uncomfortable with apps that make rafts of requests for firewall access just to start up, and still others are just plain comfy with SDC and see no reason to change other than Stardock's desire to make it happen. Sheesh, part of my attitude problem is that I really don't like the name--sounds too much like it came from a marketing major.
That said, I'm a struggling-to-get-over-it Impulse resistor. I'm almost certain to give in eventually because I'm chomping at the bit for Elemental, including the beta currently planned for this June. But I really, really feel like I should not be forced to a new update platform after *years* of happily enjoying the GC2 series with the help of SDC. If I fall prey to Elemental, so be it, I will also fall prey to Impulse. But in this shining sunset moment for GC2, I want my SDC!
p.s. I *really* admire Stardock for having a reasonable go-home time for most folks. I'd wink if the smiley button were here.
D'oh i had to update Impulse MANUALLY because the friggin program (i think it's very early version though...) cited a problem while auto update. First -
It's slow. 2nd -
It looks good though and "Impulse" name's ok. One +
Slow. Looks seem to be more important than performance, once again. OK i now have Impulse, i hope you guys at SD have fun that you've force me to use it... Too bad Elemental's gonna require it too.
Still i got the patch which is most important. Still waiting for full change log. Oh there's the change log... nice it's on Impulse but post the "real" full log too please.
I dunno if i should laugh or cry... the frigging Impulse made a nice little mess of things. It installed the patch... for GC2, NOT Twilight. Yes the Twilight's patch is in wrong place... but it did reset my settings for TA. Thank you for messing up everything...
NO NO NO (forget the above)... the thing's absolutely ****** up.... I'll uninstall the game and star all over again. See if that fixes this. If not, well....
And why i can't stop the update from Impulse? It messes my computer up and doesn't do anything...
My home computer is running Windows 2000. I can not install impulse. And has previously been stated, we've been assured that 2.0 would be available on SDC. If it would be possible to release 2.0 on SDC, as you had previously said you would, it would be greatly appreciated. Don't get me wrong, Stardock is a great company, but this reversal along with the rigidity of current company policy regarding update methods (there is only one and not everyone can use it) would be a black mark against an otherwise sterling reputation.
GalCiv II v2.0 will not be on Stardock Central. It would require additional development on Stardock Central in order to handle all of the permutations in which GalCiv is available to support 2.0.
For those of you who have problems with Impulse, we'll make sure we resolve them as soon as possible. As you can see from some of the posts, even with Impulse it's been a challenge to deal with all the different ways GalCiv is available in various combinations.
. . . wow . . .
Correct me if I'm wrong - but I don't think Microsoft is releasing security updates for it anymore, are they?
Some reason why you're not up to XP yet?
read : because of EU, we won't have 2.0 on SDC
let's say I'm just disappointed, ho well... it's not the end of the world I guess I'll wait a few more impulse updates before I grab galciv II v2.0
EDIT: by the way, where can I see impulse updates or current version so that I can check it out later on ?
I guess the amount of work that needed to be done for 2.0 crossed the expected budget and that probably means a nice update (or so I hope)

Dark Avatar - Minimum Requirements Windows XP/2000/Vista
with emphasis on the 2000. Also, TA works just fine on 2000, so why not Impulse?
As for why people like us don't have XP, take your pick:
-product activation (deactivation)
-M$ tax
-use linux for work, and browsing, and pretty much everything else actually
Now if Stardock throws in a complimentary copy of XP, then this all goes away!
For my part, I don't understand why anyone ever used 2000, or is still using it. While XP borrowed from 2k's codebase, 2000 was essentially a business OS-it was the successor to NT. The logical conclusions would be to still be on 98, which is ancient, or to be on ME, which was a total failure. Which leaves us with XP.
I would agree that Stardock stated it would be available on SDC; I do recall some other instance of Brad stating or implying that Stardock would not move beyond 98 (!) as a minimum requirement, but that may well have been long enough ago to no longer matter.
While I'm aware that 2.0 is a large change, in a number of ways, and that EU complicates matters, it still saddens me to see Stardock go back on what I saw as a promise to its customers that updates to GCII for 2.0 would be available on SDC. As a note, I'm on XP using Impulse, and in large part it has worked well for me, so I'm not just complaining because something doesn't work.
The logical solution here is to have Impulse work on 2k, but I'm not entirely sure what kind of recoding we're looking at here to make that possible. While I don't imagine that .net is new enough that 2k has no version of it, I wouldn't put it past Microsoft, either. I would support any and all moves to move Impulse away from .net dependency, though.

It becomes obvious that Stardock can not just throw in a copy of XP for every user of 2k or prior (or Linux for that matter), nor can they even to my knowledge do a direct sell, but while Brad and company will do their best to keep the minimum requirements for programs and games down, the simple fact of the matter is that said requirements are going to rise, albeit in less drastic numbers.
Other than recoding Impulse, I don't have any valid suggestions, as I'm not about to suggest illegal alternatives.
Yes, but we're not talking about new games. We're talking about a game that was released to run on 2000, purchased by people who have 2000, for the purpose of playing on 2000.
And as for the history, 2000 took NT's stability and multi-processor support and added DirectX. So for many gamers 2000 was the logical upgrade path from 98, not ME.
And why are we still using it? There was nothing in XP to justify the price tag. We just keep it around to dual boot and play GC2.
Well, us DL users were also told that there would be a 2.0 update for us as well.
It would have been nice to get a few perks, like the stand-alone ship builder - or the improved AI - or a few more options in the setup screens - or the better graphics - or...
Not going to happen, as it turns out.
Things change over time and budget, I guess. And we just have to accept it and move on.
Win2K is so woefully outdated now. You really can not expect that much backward compatibility if the OS can not even keep up.
Are you aware that there is in fact a DL update on Impulse?
I haven't looked into it to see what changes, if any, were made, and as Impulse is refusing to restore my archives at the moment I'd have to do a full uninstall and reinstall to determine the size of the update (I'm not downloading 1.2GB for your sake, sorry), nor have I spent the time to see if there was a changelog posted, but it is there.
98 and ME pales in comparison to win2k ... being a business class OS meant stability and directX implementation meant that it was a valid platform for gamers
I'll also add that until XP was patched enough, win2k was more secure and more stable
even today while I moved to XP64, the XP "explorer.exe" (NOT IE) is less stable than 2K explorer.exe
and it's not the only difference, at some point an application I had, had a handle leak (somehow you could compare this to a kind of memory leak for the less knowledgeable), 2k was very robust with handling that and crashed only when achieving a total amount of about 150000 to 200000 handles... so far to my knowledge XP can't handle that much
the final point being that 2k is still a very robust platform, in fact I moved from 2k because I bought new hardware and gfx drivers would have been a problem ...
It's been what, six or seven years or so since it's been released? That's a long enough time for even Scrooge to save up enough money. I calculate $3 per month since its release would've been more than enough to have a copy by now.
Ozo,
Can you please tell me the steps you took to install GalCiv 2 and subsequent updates? We would like to put some custom code into Impulse to handle situations that are not working. Your assistance is appreciated.
