Well I've started work on a new dock. I've still got some work to do on it, but I'd thought I'd let evertone see my progress so far. Right now I have two problems:
Anyways here are some pix:
Normal:
Light:
Dark:
White:
The red icon is just for sample purposes. The longer colored "lights" are the seperators. The smaller ones are running indicators. I'm not sure if I like the seperators on the white dock, they seem to blury.
Anyways, Crits & Comments more than welcome needed! I'll post more pix as I progress.
Perspective looks fine to me! As for name? How's "Irving" sound?
Good luck with the name. I have the same problem these days. After my 175th dream, I ran out . Now, I pick the first thing that pops in my head or I ask the family to name them.
Looking good with the darker docks. And you are right, the white one causes the colors to bleed...I mean blur. * Now, on second looks, the colors in the dark appear blurry as well, just not as bad as in the white. Maybe a bit of sharpening on them will help.*
As for a name.....Neon Nights?
*edit*
The background is really nice, but I'd like to see the colours look cleaner/sharper.
Can't think of a name - can't even name my own stuff...
Looking good, and sorry, I have no ideas for a name!
I can't help you out on a name, but I just wanted to say that it's very pleasing to look at. I think it's triggered a dormant conditioned response to the joy I felt at opening up a brand new box of crayons when I was a kid. Really nice dock!
The separators do look fuzzy, I would sharpen them up some. As for the docks themselves, I like them. The running Indicators look great, reminds me of an LED display on a radio's equalizer or the front of my router. I would go with "LED Docks" for name.
Also possibly for the spacers try making them thinner and touch from inside edge to inside edge *of the black area* or maybe leave a pixel or 2 at each end, and make them slightly taper thinner toward the rear, possibly making the separators look more like a light bar within the surface of the docks. Kind of like radios have, displays with the lights built in to the plastic that you cant see til they light up.
Yeh I know, i get tons of ideas in my head and ramble on..
Keep up the great work.
Yep, docks look fine but the seps need a bit of work. They are awful fuzzy. Keep it up!
I think the separators look odd to you because they're not quite at the same perspective as the background. the angle of the background is different to the separators. As for a name... I'm absolutely rubbish at naming stuff so unless it's excellent ignore it... but would (without the white version included) 'Face of Darkness' or 'Neo Coals' do? I think it's great... far better than anything I can do. Keep it up!
UPDATES:
Changed the seperators.
I decided to have a black only seperator on the white one.
I'm probably going to keep the docks the way they are now, unless I suddenly change my mind or someone else points out anything.
Up next: the side docks.
Thanks to everyone who has posted so far!
Edit: HG, I just read your post about making them thinner, I'll work on that. That "unseen" glowing effect was exactly what I was going for. (I'm using Blender to make these, if anyone wants to know.)
Im thinking, the Separators should have the brightness in the center then disipate as it gets further out, fading to black. Just like the running indicators do. Would give more of an ilumination behind tinted plastic/glass look to it.
Looks nice, whats with all the pink tho?
The separators, although crisp and clean now, still look wrong. You have a perspective dock but non-perspective separators. It looks weird. The separators need to start out fat at the bottom and go to skinny near the top so it looks like they are moving toward the "horizon". You do that, and I'd say your bottom docks are done.
alibear123, you can't use magic pink for od for the finished product. I'm going to go out on a limb and say the pink is just being used as a backdrop for now, thats what I do as it gives a good, harsh, difference to my work while I'm working on it.
Messiah1, you beat me to the punch. I, too, think the seperators need to be wider at the bottom, narrower at the top...and with the sharpness you currently have them at. And I love that you are just doing black for the white background. Makes it nice and sleek. I can't wait to see the final product.
Ok, here's an idea for a name. I will not be offended if you don't use it. How 'bout "Inspired" or "Inspiration"?
The reason I thought about this is because the white one (which looks much better with a light gray top, btw) looks like my Dell Inspiron laptop.
I agree with messiah1 about your separators. I kinda liked the first ones; just think they shouldn't have been that fuzzy. I think being a little fuzzy would give the impression of lights shining up through the table.
Lookin' good! Can't wait to see the finished product!
Yes, I agree with the last three. Encorporate the first one with the second one and you're done! By the way, have you chosen a name yet?
MORE UPDATES:
Well, I tried to incorporate the perspective of the first one and the sharper image in the second version while making the seperator thinner and ended up with this:
Yup!
Thanks!
Not yet, all though I really like some of the names you guys have come up with. I'll let you guys know once I've finished the side and/or top docks.
BTW: How easy is it to make the weather docklet backgrounds? I figured I 'd try to make those too.
'Raindocks'..........keep falling on my head....
Extremely easy. Just find the Backdrop.png file in the docklets folder and use that size as your dimensions. Make them and then replace that file in the docklets folder (backup the original). As soon as you replace it, it will show when you mouse over the weather docklet.
EVEN MORE UPDATES:
I started on the top/side docks. Here's my progress so far:
White
I'll start work on the weather docklets next.
(And maybe even some icons!) <--
My idea for a name 'Ebony and Ivory'
I like the new updates, but the perspective could be a little better on all but the white variation. If they were as wide as they were in your second revision, but faded to the same width at the top, the perspective would be more accurate. Looks great!
The perspective on the black and white docks is exactly the same. All I did was took the colored version, desaturated it, and darkened it. So if I was to change the dark ones I would want to change the white one as well. Unless there is a major problem with the newest version I probably won't change them.
BTW - Any coments on the newest update?
