Welcome to the MVL Round 12!
This is a (mostly) Military Victory, Mixed Settings round. So, how will it work, you ask? Here's some scoring information. There are 4 groups of settings groups; teams are not required to submit a victory of each settings group. Your team can chose to submit 4 games from the same type, a game from each type, or anywhere in between. As with last round, 6 base points will be awarded for teams submitted 3 qualifying games. Team bonus points will be awarded as last round: 3 points each to the lowest speed, highest score, and fastest average submission, and 2 points each for second. individual bonus points will be awarded per settings group (similar to all-victory rounds); that is, the fastest game and highest score in each group will receive 1 point (you can get 2 points for having both the fastest game and highest score in your settings group). It's the same goal here as last round, to get teams to decide between team and individual bonus points. As before, 3-player teams will be allowed an optional 4th game, subject to the same random assignment as last round. There's the basics. We're piloting a new victory conditions on two of the maps this round as well: race restrictions. For some of the configurations we'll require players to play as and/or play against certain AI players. JustinSane and I know this was a "controversial" suggestion, and that's why we haven't imposed the criterion in every map setting. One more note about the 2.0 beta. We've included settings that are in the 2.0 beta, but we've tried to keep them as close to "stock" as possible for now (i.e., "uncommon"). This is so players with the beta will be on roughly equal footing as players who don't have it; in future rounds, and depending on how the beta develops, we may consider using other options for tech brokering and frequency of extreme environments and mega events. This is mostly an FYI statement. So, on to the settings!Settings Group 1: SpeedOutlook: tiny map, military victory, any 2 opponents, player may select any race and any ethicsMap sliders: rare stars, rare planets, rare habitables, tight clusters, abundant asteroids, very fast research, abundant anomalies, random minors (all game editions) occasional random events, occasional extremesCheck: all victory conditions, surrenders, mega events, tech stealingDo not check: blind exploration, super abilities, "disable tech trading", "disable tech brokering"Settings Group 2: ScoreOutlook: medium map, military victory, any 7 opponents, player may select any race and any ethicsMap sliders: abundant stars, abundant planets, abundant habitables, scattered stars, slow research, abundant anomalies, abundant asteroids, 7 minors (random in DL), occasional random events, occasional extremesCheck: all victory conditions, surrenders, blind exploration, super abilitiesDo not check: "disable tech trading", "tech stealing", "disable tech brokering"Settings Group 3: ChallengeOutlook: medium map; military victory; 5 opponents which must include the Drengin, Korath and Yor; player must use Iconians and any ethicsMap sliders: uncommon stars, rare planets, common hiabitables, loose clusters, very slow research, rare anomalies, common asteroids, disable minors, occasional random events, occasional extremesCheck: all victory conditions, surrenders, blind exploration, mega events, super abilitiesDo not check: "disable tech trading", "tech stealing", "disable tech brokering"Settings Group 4: TA SpecialOutlook: small map; ascension victory; any 6 opponents; player must select Arceans, Korx, Thalans, Drengin or Iconians and any ethical alignmentMap sliders: common stars, common planets, common habitables, scattered stars, fast reserach, common anomalies, common asteroids, 4 minors (random in DL), occasional random events, occasional extremesCheck: all victory conditions, allow surrenders, mega events, super abilitiesDo not check: blind exploration, "tech stealing", "tech brokering"
Now, for the team rosters
I announced last round that team C would be suspended for until further notice. captains and former team C members should take note of the new rosters. Since all teams are now down to three members, i've randomly assigned each player in a straightforward manner. Former team C members should note their new allegiances. I"ve embolded the former team C members to make it easier. If i missed someone's announced sbatical or resignation, please let me know! Also, we need a new captain for team E. For now i've assigned Pndrev based purely on expeience, but i expect team E to let us know who the captain will be (even if that means confirming Pndrev): though, since Davabled happened to be assigned to team E and agreed to serve at team C captain last round, he might be a good option as well. Note: i've indicated the players who may optionally submit a forth game for respective teams in yellow (though as with last round, a second/forth submission would be null and void if a new player joins your team mid-round).Team A: Capt. dystopic, PlayJeff, loupdinour, KushHazeTeam B: Capt. JustinSane, Ferrel, Lethrin. neiloTeam D: Catp. KzintiPatriarch, Ragnar1, SilverBeacherTeam E: Pndrev; RhetoricalSun; Galefury, DavabledOkay, i hope that takes care of everything, but i doubt it does. if there are any questions or things that remain unclear, please let JS and i know soon. Lastly...
***Round 12 will end at 12:00 midnight on Nov. 29 (the evening between Nov. 29 and 30)***
I decided this round deserves and extra week. Ending on Nov. 22/23 would be Thanksgiving weekend for Americans (unless i totally have my dates f***ed up), and i felt ending during that week would in a practical sense be like ending a week early for a significant number of players. For future reference, I don't by any means know every country's holidays: if you have a significant holiday occurring during an end-week, whether it's national or religious or whatever, let me and JS know and we'll take it into strong consideration.Special thanks to Commissioner Emeritus SilverBeacher for creating the screen shots, and sorry about never doing it last round.
GOOD HUNTING!
Good games guys.
KP: I think you have a scoring mistake. It looks like you only gave team B, 4 points for base in the speadsheet. They should have 16 and be the sole winner of the round. Congrats team B.
Sorry to see you go Silverbeacher.
DOH! You are correct....I edited the results post. Congrats team B!
Sentient species taste better...
Great round everyone!
And thank you KP for your excellent (as usual) scorekeeping.
Silverbeacher, thank you for all you've done for the MVL. You will be missed.
I think it may be appropriate to ask what everyone would like to see from the MVL going forward. A hiatus till the holidays have passed? Different format? Steady as she goes? Or are there others who feel that it has run its course? Basically, where do we want to go from here?
I'd love to hear the thoughts from as many MVL members (and former members) as possible on this. Thanks again everyone .
I get the feeling that there might not be enough interest to continue the MVL, but if we do continue then I will participate. GC2 is getting closer to the end of its effective life-cycle, as there are progressively less new players, and older players naturally move on to other games.
As for the format, I like the different settings groups, because it adds to the team strategizing potential. I think overall the system we have been using for points also works well.
The main question is are there enough people who want to play to keep it interesting and competetive. If we can get an accurate count of who still wants to participate that would be very helpful.
I like the current format, and I'd be up for another round.
I'm still in. I like the current format with the multiple game types. Anything that leads to a team strategy and prompts discussion makes the MVL more viable, as opposed to just averaging up some game scores.
Any thoughts on a new recruitment drive? I'm relatively new to the MVL, and I have not gotten burned out yet. We've had a few new players over these last few rounds that have been flaky and fleeting, but if we got a few more new players that were involved and could be counted on to submit a game or at least acknowlege that they can't submit for the round, it might keep things a little more fresh.
this is a copy of what i posted over at the DoD thread at the Core
i don't even know if he's bothered to read the Round 12 results as of yet, and considering he didn't even get a game in (which I admonished him for, at least I posted that i needed a backup done) but Dystopic says he's def out. I'm pretty sure Neilo is out also. Kushhaze never reported in, so he's out. Galefury is out for next round at the very least, if not longer. Davabled is out for the next round. PlayJeff and Lethrin never submitted either.So...that leaves you:LoupdinourJustinSane4KzintiPatriarchRagnar1FerrelPndrevand RhetoricalSunand at that point, even if you pick one or two people...well, at best you could have 3 teams of 3. I mean, I hate to just kinda douse water on the fire, but in my humble opinion, I think its better to just end it, and congratulate everyone that participated, rather than dragging on into another month, especially when that month is the Christmas holiday season.
And to follow up on that...Team D would really need to be a no-show for the final round to NOT win this season. Not to sound defeatist in the face of those who played most of this season, but I just don't see any team pulling 11+ points ahead of a team in 1 round...especially when the ranks are thinning out faster than they are filling. It would be 2 rounds in a row of merging teams, that may just be the sign to close up shop that is needed.
I think even taking a 1 month break due to the holidays would compound the stagnation further.
My interest in gc2 hs waned this last couple months. Beyond the MVL I haven't submitted a game to the MV since July. This last month due to work has increasingly hurt this since I had little time to really devote to the game. Time away may spark desire to play again...but I don't foresee the time required to be a month or less.
If the verdict is to stick it out 1 last round, I will 'knock out' a game for the sake of the many. So, if a warm body is needed to make 1 more round happen, count my warm body being in it. Heart and soul though...may not be included.
I've been mulling over how to make this post all day w/o offending anybody or pissing anybody off. Some (nobody here) may have no issue with tossing people under the bus to make themselves feel better, but I just wasn't raised that way.
hey guys, yes i'm stepping down and sorry i've been MIA. no excuses, just to say good luck if you continue the league. no ill will either; if any of you wish for advise or anything for continuing the league in the future, feel free to tap me. good hunting!
Eh, your plate was pretty full this last month in RL. While that doesn't excuse a heads up (as you said, no excuses), I could see how gc2 wasn't at the top of your thoughts. As your team member I could have been more pro-active to prod at you and the others to see if they had something in store.
It is a team effort, so even if one person doesn't speak up, the others should still make sure everything is good to go. So while you may say you failed us, I say we failed you just as much.
I have immensely enjoyed the MVL - thank you all for your contributions to a great league. However, I agree with those who feel that we now lack the critical mass necessary to be viable, and in truth my enthusiasm for GalCiv2 isn't as strong as it used to be either. So I am resigning as MVL Commissioner, though if anyone wants to organize something for the future I would be glad to help in any way I can (and would also probably participate as a player).
Again, thank you all - it's been a pleasure.
I think then, maybe its best, that we retire the MVL and congratulate each other on a successful and fun run. And who knows, I plan on being around for GCIII and there just may be a revival
That being said, there are a few individuals I would like to take the time to especially thank for their time and effort in making the MVL what it was, if it wasn't for them, the MVL would have never lasted two rounds let alone 13 (12 + bonus round)
Ghostwes: It was GW's original idea that led to the discussion and formation of the MVL. It wasn't exactly what he envisioned, but I still think he was proud of the results.
Neilo: The original "Commish". Especially in the early days, he really got things rolling.
Mumblefratz: Besides just being a great MVL player, he also put in lots of time and effort into either writing or coordinating to make sure the MVL was run fairly and coherently.
FireBender: I think FB was oft overlooked by many other players, but he was a consistent team captain oft leading his team to either first or second place. While he may have been one of the "weakest" admin members, we always valued his input which at many times was at odds with our own views. His opinions did often change our own stances in subtle ways that are not always appreciated.
KzintiPatriarch: ScoreKeeper and in many ways an honorary commissioner, he was always on top of what was going on with everyone, and maintained a positive attitude. I was honored to have him as my team captain for these last few rounds.
Dystopic and JustinSane4: Taking the reigns of something like the MVL and running with it is never easy. But I must congratule these two on bringing creative and fun ideas to the MVL, even if it was for a short time. I think these last two rounds have been among the most fun, even if they had some of the lowest interest.
And the rest of the players: Without you, there would be no MVL at all, so thank you.
As for me...well, I had a roller coaster experience. I've been on winning teams, and I've captained losing teams. I won Commissioner in a close contest with qualified players, and I stepped down when I no longer had the drive to play GCII as much. For better or worse, the MVL was a fun experience this past year, and I wouldn't change that for the world
So be it. It was a lot of fun. My thanks to all.
I do think that there arent enough people to sustain the MVL at this point. So I just want to say congratulations and thanks to all those that made it a success and a lot of fun. Aside from the special thanks to everyone that Silver mentioned, I also want to thank Silver himself. I'd also like to salute my various Team D comrades over the rounds, and a great congratulations for my team-mates this season for ending the League with team D in a commanding position.
Thanks everyone!
indeed, major thanks to everyone, and i mean everyone, who's participated in this project. i also think Kryo deserves some thanks; even though we never got the MVL integration into the AltMeta done, he still helped us and advised us a great deal in what our options would be.
i have to say it's been an honor to serve as the commissioner here. it was short, and i certainly became somewhat out of it over the past two months, but it was still very enjoyable. i'm glad i was able to offer some ideas that freshed things up over the last two rounds.
and finally i'd like to thank the Academy
Starfleet Academy?
* quickly checks his armpits *
It's sad. Thanks to everyone for allowing me to be a part of the fun. I'll be keeping my eye out for the (inevitable?) return of the MVL.
Thanks everyone! Too bad it didn't last longer, since I got in near the end, but I really enjoyed it while it lasted. I'll be happy to participate the next time something like this gets going again.
A bit late to the farwell party, but I have a few words to say as well. When the first signs of the slowing of the community showed in 2007 the greatest minds of GalCiv 2 met to form the Metaverse Council. From that Council spawned the AltMeta and thanks to that there was a new renewal of the game. When things were slowing again, and the Metaverse Council was only a memory, we once again were creative enough to encourage gameplay through the MVL.
I was never and active team member of the MVL, but when I did participate it was always a good experience. Thank you to all the people who made it possible!
better late than never TGE. Thanks for your comments, we had some good times.
