I know, most of you reading are probably going "What the hell, there's a demo?" right about now. But it turns out that, yes, there is indeed an English-version demo that was very quietly released on Monday of this week (I only found out last night). You can get it here: http://files.filefront.com/Kings+Bounty+The+Legend+Demo/;11799044;/fileinfo.html
On to the impressions. I never played the original, however I did play most of the HOMM games on and off, so I was interested in King's Bounty because of the same style of combat. I knew it was going to be an adventure game as well, so it looked like a fun game to try. Well, it certainly didn't dissapoint!
First of all, the artwork is superb. The colors are very vibrant and pretty to look at and everything is done with great care. The units are very nicely detailed and animated, down to swinging necklaces on pirates when they move around the battlefield. The graphics put the latest HOMM to shame.
The combat is familiar to all the HOMM players, with some new twists! First, your hero's skills can determine what abilities your units possess. Putting points in the military skills opens up flaming arrows for your archers, fire attacks for your swordsmen, and the like. Eventually, you also get a spirit chest which is neat addition. When you fight, you get rage. You can then use this rage to summon spirits on the battlefield that are sort of like mini-heroes in that they level up as you use them. For example, you can summon this rock thing that shapes into a giant sword that smashes into a target stack and does damage. This is sort of like a spell, you use it and then it recharges for x number of rounds until you can do it again. Eventually, once you do this enough times, your rock spirit thing levels up and you get to choose whether you want to upgrade its sword spell thing, or give it a new spell that creates a wall on the battlefield. These spirits are a new twist to the traditional combat, and they're very nicely drawn and animated (the huge sword smash looks awesome )
Away from combat, you have your main hero. He runs around the map in real time, talks to people, gets various quests, finds magic schools, temples, castles, so on so forth that he can buy items from and recruit people for his armies. He has 3 skill trees to upgrade, and each levelup gives a certain number of "runes" which are used to rank up skills in those trees and get new ones. This is pretty nicely implemented, I thought, and so far it looks like you'll really have to decide what to pick, since you don't get enough runes to get everything (or even close to everything). Of course, my Paladin hero only got to level 4 so far in the demo..
Anyway, the demo kept me playing for hours last night and I only grudgingly went to bed, cursing having to get up early for work.. it's going to be a great game.
Won't be possible since they changed quite some things (you only gate rage spirits much later in the full version for example).
Your heroes statistics increase the statistics of your troops.
And having heroes in battle creates a major imbalance imho (see HoMMIV).
And it's out! Yarrrrr...
Got it downloading off Gamersgate before I went to work Going to be a slow, slow work day though...
Ok, I took that as an endorsement of Gamersgate.
So if doesn't please me, I'll blame you. Ok with that?
Btw. Stardock, stop being lazy and add King's Bounty to Impulse allready!
Well, it's my first buy on Gamersgate So don't blame me, blame 1C.
I prodded Zoomba and Yarlen about King's Bounty on Impulse. Zoomba said he tried it and wants it, and Yarlen said they're working on it.
Well, too late. Allready downloading it.
Btw. they sure are slow, 225kb/sec. I miss my 1.5Mb/sec Impulse download speed.
I just can't wait. I have to go pulling out my last wisdom tooth, and will play King's Bounty all night as an anesthetic.
That's odd, mine was downloading at about 550-600kb/s, which comes close to peaking my download cap
And you're lucky, sort of.. I hear pulling wisdom teeth sucks (I never got mine pulled )
Your hero is there: Adding all his stats to the army; using his spells; giving the troops skills and talents they would not be able to use without him. Oh, and he pays their salery too
I'm so addicted to this game.
No kidding.
I don't know if I was lucky or what, but I had my wisdom teeth pulled, and I really felt very little pain; I just looked like a chimpmunk for several days. So that "saying" does not bother me. I'm at home with a broken foot now, so the saying "break a leg" makes me turn white.
So, can anyone give a short review if they got this game yet? BTW, I got Col2, it's really good, but wait till they patch it to get it; they let several game-breaking bugs through
Getting your teeth yanked is more a question of what they're doing when they get yanked. Mine were in the bone and had to be busted apart and yanked out in pieces. My neck hurt from all the strain by the time the guy was done ripping them up. Of course, I was also a fucking moron and had burgers for lunch right after and a steak for dinner. Add to that not bothering to take any pain killers until it was excruciating and it was one hell of an interesting day. I'm not real bright when it comes to avoiding pain. If they're severely impacted, getting them removed is major oral surgery and you're really in the shits.
Played the demo, meh. It's kinda boring. If it were hard, yeah, but there is so little difficulty involved. Your mana regenerates, you can kill armies ten times your size with the starting spells as the caster, and you get enough troops to kill those armies ten times your size when you flee one twenty times your size that you actually can't kill between the rage skills and fireball. I don't like games that have no losing situation.
You should try it on hard or insane The default normal was pretty easy. But the demo itself was easier than the game. That stack of mages in front of the Knight's Tent in the demo in the first zone? In the final I couldn't take it out until I was level 12 or 13.
Then try with another hero if it is too easy with the spell caster.
BTW, have done all the available quests? Especially the one with zombies without killing them?
Sadly, Gamersgate won't allow me to download it since I am not in a country where it is allowed to sell it.
Well boo and hiss It's on D2D too, now. Dunno if that's any different.
Say no to region locks! And at the same time prod Zoomba and Yarlen to hurry up and get it on Impulse already
It states on the D2D page for the game : This product is only available for purchase in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
I guess I need to wait the official release date in France (24 october 2008) before hoping to see it available on the various direct download sites.
